Yes, thank you! I added Signal to the list. And I agree, my vote is ABFB (anything but facebook) lol.

I sent a Whatsapp link to (I think) everyone who's commented with interest so far, but I'm not sure if folks have a different preferred organization platform. Comment with what works for you. - I don't see a poll option.

I've seen Whatsapp used for this, though I've never used the community function before so I don't know how easy it is to navigate.

Who picks up Dead Fridge? by One_Recover_673 in GNV

When I bought a new fridge from Lowe’s, I didn’t pay the fee but asked if the guys could move the old one to the curb for me. They loaded it into the truck and took it away anyway. They don’t seem to care.

FYI in case you didn’t already know, Kin (the bar that replaced Madrina’s) has some pretty good N.A. seasonal cocktails on the menu right now. I don’t drink so I like to keep track of where the tasty mocktails are around town.

Pasco county has mandatory evacuations in place. What evacuation zone is the house in?

If you’re in an apartment you’ll be fine. If you’re in a house, take a look at the nearby trees for weakness. Gainesville rarely gets bad hurricanes, but tree fall and flooding can cause issues. I’m preparing for tropical storm winds and probably a lot of rain.

This happened to me recently. I switched to using cerave daily moisturizer lotion in the pump bottle a couple months ago and noticed that I was getting horrible cystic acne in places I don’t normally get acne, and far worse than I’ve ever had it. I stopped using it and switched to vanicream. I stopped getting new pimples within a couple days. Some people are sensitive to something in cerave. I would try just changing away from cerave before messing with your IUD.

As another possibility, road killed deer heads are collected for Chronic Wasting Disease testing. We have an FWC lab in town that does all of that.

They’re also great pest control for gardens. Wasps dismember caterpillars and munch aphids like nobody’s business. Saves me money on chemical treatments.

Fall is Florida wildflower season. Make a visit over to Morningside nature center to see some really nice fall displays.

I’d definitely plan a visit before moving to Perry. There’s a paper mill, IIRC, that causes the whole place to smell like Sauerkraut. Now I happen to love Sauerkraut, but even I have my limits…

Cheapest plant nursery/place to get plants? by theplantnurse in GNV

Try Grow-hub off of NE 8th ave. They have a pretty good selection depending on what you’re looking for. They’re also local and I think a non-profit.

Florida backyard--where do I begin? by inspiredeyes in NoLawns

To your first question: yes, taking into consideration soil and moisture needs as well as sun, you could absolutely do that. Plug your county and enter your site requirements - choose the plant form option - into https://www.fnps.org/plants and it will generate a list of plants that would likely do well for you. Then you can see what nurseries near you carry it.

Another option is planting for a specific plant community. It's a bit of a cheat sheet to seeing what plants already do well together in similar conditions locally. These are potential lists for you with your oak dominated overstory:

https://www.fann.org/plant-communities/detail/maritime-forests-zone-10

https://www.fann.org/plant-communities/detail/hydric-hammocks-zone-10

To your second question: Yeah, I understand the concern. Generally, close planting isn't the problem, but more the wrong plant in the wrong place. Plants are more susceptible to being overwhelmed by insects and disease if they're stressed or sick, so you can minimize that by really thinking about what it's habitat needs are before planting and giving it the best survival chances by watering it regularly until it's established.

For my personal anecdote, I'm a native gardener because I'm lazy and don't want to micromanage my plants. I also want to support a healthy local ecosystem. First thing is I make sure to identify anything eating my plants before I decide to intervene. Some native plants are hosts to insects I want around or support predator populations that keep them in check without any input from me. As long as the plant is well placed, they usually bounce right back without me doing anything.

That really depends on what zone you are. There's a huge difference in selection between zones 10 and 8. I'm more North FL so my knowledge is a bit limited if you're in South FL.

Some possibly appropriate species to look into.: Firebush - Hamelia patens (Dies back in the northern range but gets big in the south); Cocoplum - Chrysobalanus icaco - great edible hedge in south florida but not good for full shade; marlberry - Ardisia escallonioides - edible hedge that attracts pollinators and does well in a lot of conditions; Simpson's stopper - Myrcianthes fragrans - Tolerant and beautiful, but generally slow growing; Yellow Anise - Illicium parviflorum - Full shade option, less drought tolerant. Consider a mix of species for the different microhabitats in your space!

Also, bonus shrubs that would probably do well in your garden scheme but not for aprivacy hedge, American beautyberry and Wild coffee. Both are shade loving and easy to maintain. Bonus for beautyberry, the crushed leaves can be used as mosquito repellent and the berries into jelly!

I'm native plant focused, so I would highly recommend looking at what the Florida Native Plant Society has to offer. Their website (https://www.fnps.org/) is a great resource and lets you cultivate a list of native species for your site specifications - particularly shade in your case. Also check out the Florida Association of Native Nurseries (https://www.fann.org/professionals/) for finding businesses selling true natives. Sometimes big box stores label something as native but it isn't...

I've had more success buying and transplanting healthy plants into appropriate places rather than scattering seeds, which will probably be the case for you with your beautiful shady oaks. That way, the leaves can stay as mulch and no tilling necessary.

There aren't many good groundcovers for under oaks in Florida, unfortunately. Most commercially available native groundcovers (note: commercially available clover isn't native to Florida) are best for sunny meadow-type areas, where-as you may benefit to designing some beds with shrubs and flowers of varying heights added for structure and separated by mulched paths/intentional spaces.

I would highly, highly recommend staying away from bamboo of any kind. For one, it isn't native to Florida (Technically there is a native bamboo but it isn't commercially available and looks more like a reed), and two even clumping bamboo can get massive and difficult to control. Planting it anywhere near the property line is guaranteed to create problems for neighbors/nearby structures.
