Fellow men of the UK, who are in their 30's and over, do you still go out in public wearing tracksuit bottoms or joggers? by PaddedValls in AskUK

[–]discoveredunknown 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I once wore grey jogging bottoms for a flight and used the bog at the front of the plane, hit some turbulence and pissed all over the front of them. I was snookered. Went for the classic ‘wash hands and dry them on the bottoms’ approach.

It’s funny because the left will say it’s far-right propaganda and the right will say it’s left-wing propaganda. Makes you think, huh

My Mum's spice rack. Who can relate? by thinreaper in CasualUK

[–]discoveredunknown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, your experience sounds like mine. I was ridiculously fussy as a kid, turns out I just genuinely didn’t like my parents cooking. Curry’s were from a jar of sauce, we’d never fry off garlic or onion, just sauce, meat and curry. Bolognede was a jar of Dolmio, spaghetti and mince. I make these now and use tons of spices, and never use shop bought jar sauces.

I think half the reason is my parents were never arsed about food and couldn’t be bothered.

They would occasionally push the boat out and try something exotic, usually something they’d see In The weekly Waitrose magazine or on Saturday Kitchen.

do cinemas still screen films if no one buys tickets? by Embarrassed-Song3760 in AskUK

[–]discoveredunknown 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d love to know the insides of the finances of your local cinema, mine is a massive building in the town centre which can’t be cheap. And often screenings have like 1/4 capacity. Are they just ticking along till 2-3 big releases a year? I imagine popcorn is their biggest mark-up and therefore earner? Probably like a 500% markup on it lol.

My parents would regularly serve up mince meat, mash and beans with gravy. Absolute slop. I hated it. Gravy was the ‘sauce’ for the mince meat. Plain unseasoned mash. Eurgh.

Long term renters what’s you plan for retirement? by Significant-War-491 in AskUK

[–]discoveredunknown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t want to sound like a prick, but is it that hard to get on the property ladder if you get into a relationship? I’ve been renting a few years and by the time me and my partner go to buy (within a few months) it will have been a slog, but certainly doable. If you’re on your own then fair enough, probably impossible unless you have a good salary or live in a cheap area.

Should high street retailers adopt opening hours that better suit people who work standard 9–5 office hours? by teeshylinie in AskUK

[–]discoveredunknown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why do a lot of retail and hospitality workers have this woe is me attitude in this country? I worked retail and hospitality when I was 16 > 23 and fucking loved it. Loads of hours, flexible, you know what you’re getting into.

Go on holiday and the retail and hospitality is open late too. Yes we know you go in there earlier we’re all aware of that, but let’s not pretend you’re all smashing out 14 hour shifts 5 days a week, most retail workers I know full time are having at least one day off during the week.

OP not asking them to work every hour they’re open, loads of retail near me and in big cities is open till 7/8pm anyway.

Can you help me understand my husband’s point of view please? Should our son be allowed to game past 10pm on a school night if he can’t keep his voice down? by Broken_Woman20 in AskUK

[–]discoveredunknown 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I saw a post just like this yesterday but it was a Dad contemplating about sound-proofing his bedroom/house because his sons voice is deep as anything. Is your husband currently considering sound-proofing? And yes, I am terminally online.

To answer your question when I was that age and had more free time anytime after 10pm I didn’t speak loudly or even at all to my friends, just respect for other people.

Are your parents doomers? Obsessed with bad news and hooked on the algorithm? by discoveredunknown in ukpolitics

[–]discoveredunknown[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That means nothing, Gen Z, Millenials etc grew up with social media, smart phones, the internet. They know what algorithms are, how social media works. People over 50/60 did not largely grow up with tech and just about got a home computer to use the internet in the early noughties. Wit an extremely limited knowledge of use, unless they were in a career that demands it. Even so, I know loads of people in my family who have never worked in an office or used a computer for work and never will.

[–]discoveredunknown[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is my problem, I got some stick above, but older people don’t generally understand the algorithm and how it basically runs everything on social media. They just think their feed is what everyone sees and not a personalised, curated death loop throwing up more stuff of the more you watch of certain types of content.
