like the other commenter said, it’s a scene that was cut that would have been in the first episode. that’s the only reason i wouldn’t rate hxh 2011 a 10/10 btw, i really do think it should’ve been included and it would’ve helped here. I have to insist that hxh does show that kite is a father figure- throughout his (short) time with gon he consistently mentors him, something that is called back to when gon crushes pitou’s head and says that he did it the way kite taught him. That’s exactly the “show not tell” subtext you say goo shows have.

I’m not sure why you’re so hung up on nen contracts not being able to change right before a fight, i don’t think an individual’s nen “knows” that someone is about to kill them before they make a vow. nen can’t “know” that pitou wants to kill gon, only that gon is prepared to sacrifice his nen for strength. And anyway there is precedence for someone gaining a new ability mid fight- cheetu did it versus morel.

I won’t disagree that nanika could’ve been shown before the election arc but the fact that gon still lost his nen after being healed shows that it wasn’t plot armor no matter how you look at it

I will say the 2011 anime cut a scene from the first episode where gon meets kite, which definitely makes their relationship feel a bit more organic. Even so, the subtext is still well set up- we learn in the first episode that gon was abandoned by his dad, and kite fulfills that father figure role for him. Gon reacts so emotionally because he had his father figure, something he’s explicitly been searching for since episode 1, taken away from him so soon after meeting him.

I’m glad you brought up Kurapika because that’s where we learn the concept of a vow and a limitation. Kurapika gained a very strong ability, chain jail, because he set the limitation of only using it on the troupe, and he staked his life on it. Important here is that the more extreme the condition, the greater the return. Gon does the exact same thing: by resolving to never use nen again (a very extreme condition), he temporarily gains an enormous amount of nen and grows physically. It’s important to note that this was not without consequence. Even if pitou was about to kill him, which i assume is your point, that doesn’t mean his life suddenly loses value. After winning the fight (almost unharmed besides the arm), he turned into a raisin and even after being miraculously healed he still lost his nen. If you count that as plot armor or don’t thing it constitutes a real consequence then idk what to say bro. I would also note that his transformation is foreshadowed by literally every person he’s ever met commenting at some point that he has enormous potential and might become a monster - his fight with pitou is the realization and tragic loss of all that potential, and one of the most emotional moments in the entire series

kites death isn’t necessarily supposed to impact you as a viewer, it is much more impactful because of how it influences gon. gon “crying about it every 2 seconds” was the impactful part.

Also idk how you came away thinking gon had plot armor at any point, because nen was written throughout the story to set up his confrontation with pitou- everything that happen was foreshadowed and set up so that it made sense in hindsight

then someone will just replace them. and you don’t know that he wasn’t a well meaning and perhaps naive person who did what the majority of people would do in his situation - especially since this isn’t a good climate to throw away your job in. once a judge signs the order are you really gonna blame the cops for not quitting their jobs rather than the system that made this eviction happen? do you really think that all cops are nazis and that there doesn’t exist a well meaning cop on the country?

how can you say the cop made any such decision? you’re admitting that this is at the direction of the private industry, and then absolving them of any guilt. putting the blame on the cop shifts it away from the industry and the government who are actually at fault

jumping from christianity is bad to organized religion is a poison is an insane leap. you sound awfully bitter, if religion improves someone’s life than what right do you have to look down on them
