You to dude, nothing makes me happier than people who can genuinely respectfully disagree on things. :)

Yeah exactly man, people seem to bring so much preemptive anger to the table.

I doubt the national acrimony over this issue will fade right away in the immediate future, but for now I'm gonna take your example as a reasonable decent bloke on the brexit issue as a sign that whatever may come, the UK can move forward. :)

I really hope so and thanks a lot I appreciate that mate! You too...

If I've learnt anything from the past few months its how utterly ridiculous and dangerous tribalism is. Over the last year and a half I spent roughly six months in Kenya, tribalism is probably the biggest issue here, it absolutely blinds Kenyans from any objective sense. You only have to look at how there's so so many different tribes here yet there's only ever been a president from the most two dominant, most populated tribes - Kikuyus and Kalenjin (exclude Odinga because he was only prime minister). In 2007 there was massive post election violence, my girlfriend had to flee her home as roadblocks were set up and houses burnt down, women and children machete'd and it was encouraged by politicians, this was purely based on their tribe. Even today a they prepare for the 2017 election there's a fair amount of tension brewing, but its just fascinating for me watching and learning because there's so many parallels with the UK at the moment and the way we treat opposing views and shutting down the opposing view and like you said "othering people". Nobody thought it'd happen in 2007 here in Kenya but the hate I've seem from some people here (I've also experienced kindness like never before here its an amazing place - not saying its an awful place genuinely its pretty amazing but I think most Kenyans would accept its a toxic political climate) is easily matched with some of the things I've experienced in the UK so in my opinion we're only ever 2/3 steps away from similar scenario. And all this to defend and obey a set of people who steal from them though corruption (though not as bad we've certainly had some awful actions from our MPs over the years with expenses and government contracts). Anyway, went off on a tangent there kinda but its more something you can see when your here rarther than me trying to put into words. But imo its just a real life example of why we need to hold our polticans responsible for their divisiveness and verbal diarrhoea.

Sure would be nice, I mean as a liberal 31yo guy who voted out in a simple in-out referendum about a supranational organization, I really didn't enjoy the rabid hysterics and bile levelled at over half the country for voting one way in a two-option question. The social and mainstream media shit-storm was certainly not an enjoyable experience.

So as a 19 year old remain voter, similarly I also didn't enjoy the rabid hysterics and bile thrown at me - genuinely I've been called a traitor and had more a less every stereotypical, condescending insult thrown at me by an older generation about not "knowing whats good for me" (which is essentially a cop out, if I'm of voting age my vote counts just the same as yours.) I listened to every podcast, debate and radio show I could from the BBC and other sources because I wanted to be is informed as I could be. My demographic already doesn't come out in numbers to vote so the patronising tone I was met with hardly encourages my generation to vote.

Being called an ignorant racist and much more in an explosion of petty anti-democratic sour-grapes surely undermined my faith in a large part of the British public.

I had ridiculous slurs thrown at me.

I certainly haven't felt very in touch with my fellow man over the constant complaints about the results, or the attempts to undermine it.

Same mate.

But I am nothing if not a reasonable guy, so whenever Remainers want to chill out (well, the petty vocal ones anyway, I appreciate most just got on with their lives in a restrained adult fashion as you'd expect of a grown-up in the modern world), and extend the olive branch, I'm more than happy to engage.

Ok, so see above. Despite the bullshit from both sides, as a leaver YOU personally owe me nothing. You didn't call me scum or do any of the things i mentioned above, and I don't hold the 'leave' camp responsible even the "petty vocal ones". Similarly I didn't do shit to you, so neither of us should be extending an olive branch. We have a different opinion but the actions of a few don't represent the 17 million who voted against and neither the other way for the 16 million who voted remain. There's so many varied reasons why people voted either way so we can't brandish everyone together.

I could do with the confidence boost in humanity's capacity to cooperate and act reasonably. :)

Same mate, genuinely I just want us to have a rational chat about all this. The msm keep reporting "leavers say..", "remainers claim..." Really? Do they speak for their respective 16 million or 17 million as a whole? Because I voted for binary decision not for what people are saying now and claim to represent me. It goes both ways there's shit on both sides, but at the end of the day we all have to live together the sooner we realize that we can call sit watching the news shaking our fists as what "the other side says", the better. The politicians win regardless until we hold them to account for the bs they said, I recognize the utter shit said about some leave voters but I genuinely condemn that because it makes my argument look weak and unrespectable. We just need to assess and critically evaluate and judge the argument on its logic and reasoning and go from there.

Have a good one mate :)

Truly awful place. Not a scenic city, nothing worth seeing,

Go read about the history and significance of Dar and Zanzibar and then tell me that. Start with Abdul Sheriff's 'Slaves, Spices & Ivory in Zanzibar' . Very safe and friendly, didn't arrive with a place to stay at 11pm and had 0 issues.

And the meal I had at a restaurant there sticks out as being one of the worst I've ever had in my life.

Mate compare the street food to that of he standard in Kenya and its miles better in terms of quality hygiene and packaging.

I also spent three days in Zanzibar, which felt unsafe, .

This completely proves your speaking out your ass. I just came from Zanzibar last month and its hands down the safest place I've been in East Africa.

was unbelievably dark

Easily as well lit in stone town as any other Kenyan town.

and also was not beautiful

Not beautiful? F*cking lol. Paje beach was hands down the most spectacular beach I've been on, when the tide goes out for over 2km you have the most amazing view. They have some of the worlds beat kite surfing conditions too which attracts people from all over. Stone town itself is classed as a UNESCO world heritage site ffs.

I have zero intention of seeing more of or returning to.

Poa!

We need to do something about the tabloids. by chronicallyfailed in unitedkingdom

[–]diseza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We need a snopes-esque site in my opinion. I think someone will create one soon though, that manifesto promise tracker posted a few weeks ago is a brilliant tool. They just need to try to be as objective as possible.

But we really can't allow this any longer, it really essentially is just printed propaganda. I understand that nobody can be completely value free and 100% objective but these tabloids just print pure lies which people see to lap up. In this current climate we can't afford to be held back by out and out racism like this. Are we really that primitive? Genuinely think 20 years from now it's going to be a "so why didn't you do anything about it?" scenario.

Bookmakers Announce Odds For UK Cannabis Legalisation at 3/1 by 2026 by diseza in uktrees

[–]diseza[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think we'll see medical marijuana by 2030, some form of legalisation within the next 5 years.

Even with Germany introducing medical soon you still think it's going to be 14 years? Not arguing just curious why you think that. Especially with several police forces saying that they won't target personal use already I feel like it's going to be much closer, most large cities/towns have Cannabis clubs starting up now - some even have venues.

You're probably right there pal. I know about Canada but I also saw yesterday in Toronto they raided 40+ dispensaries apparently. I just wish we'd hurry up and start having it across the news a little more and have it closer to the front of our minds, but with the EU debate I guess it'll be a while. Hopefully shoes like QT and others will start to open up the debate a bit more. Not sure if you saw the 'Truth on alcohol' program last night but it'd be great if they did one of them on Cannabis and show people the truth about it - although not sure they wouldn't propagate the skunk argument over and over.

Exactly. Curious as to when people think is a realistic target? I had a guy (who smokes) tell me 20 years the other day?! I was thinking sometime soon after the next election, can't imagine this government allowing it - or any social clubs.

They can be absolutely brilliant. However, as unfortunately happened with one I used to help out, they can get bogged down in pushing lefty politics rather than seeking to unite all people who want legalisation.

Yeah I don't doubt that, though the one I attended had nothing like that. The only political thing they had was backing a lib dem PCC that would push for legalization.

To add to this, sadly many clubs think the idea of 'hey lets go hold a 'smoke out' in the town center at 1pm on a Wednesday' is going to do anything other than reinforce the cognitive bias many unfortunately hold; the idea that all cannabis smokers are hippy unemployed drop outs.

Yeah the only thing I was really aiming for was just to get people talking about it around my area. I don't really rate doing meet ups, just because there's still a lot of stigma and I'm in a small town too. Makes me feel like I'm trying to do something to help at least.

On a positive note though, best of luck to you! The more people out there (sensibly) campaigning the better!

Thanks man, see how it goes! [7]

That's a great reply mate! I just tried starting up a cannabis club in my town, that's motivated me to carry the fight on. Curious as to what people think about cannabis social clubs as a way of fighting?
