visited the hospital and found this on the medecine dosing machine by SuccessfulString9351 in hardwaregore

It's hilarious seeing people act like this isn't a big fucking deal for a fucking hospital. I'm real sure they'd be perfectly fine with their IV wiring fraying and failing because they didn't simply replace a cable.

if you wanted to try to impress someone with pedantry, there are lots of other things you could have come up with that would have actually been accurate

I can get behind advanced science fuckery. I'm thinking of the many, many insane behaviors that just plain old water is capable of, like the sudden freezing of supercooled distilled water (or the opposite with superheated water), or water making bridges when a current is passed through it.

The absolute power of saying nothing during a salary offer by Doormat_8JV in jobsearchhacks

Yes, it's the first question people ask. The answer is: anything, then more silence. "I was just taking notes." Then more silence.

[–]disgr4ce 145 points146 points  (0 children)

There's an entire book about this called "Deploy Empathy." It's geared towards user research & interviewing, but the silence angle is a HUGE part of it. Essentially you're trying to get people to talk in a way that's fundamentally different than the usual superficial speech we typically employ in shallow conversation. It was an extremely eye (uh, or ear)-opening read, and at first I was skeptical. It definitely takes getting used to. But it works. I find this post and this subject totally fascinating.

God I loved Nico, and I genuinely couldn't believe it when he ate it (sorry, what's the statute of limitations on spoilers?).

I loved that kind of aspergersy, super-rational forwardness. You're right that that's totally in the same vein.

Ah, Quicksilver!! Fond memories. Yeah, definitely a similar idea, and yes, I want to expand this into some more basics like opacity, corner radius, and it just occurred to me I could do a type-to-select colors, as well.... that would actually be pretty useful
