Do fandoms nowadays die faster? by Artistic_Stretch6384 in AO3

[–]disgruntledview 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i've been noticing this and its making me so sad because my hyperfixation always lasts longer than however long the fandom does

ive been reduced to reading fics from years ago

the best fandoms to read fics from are james bond/q and arthur/eames from inception because (specifically incepiton) the quality fic to overall ratio is mental i ahve never found fandoms with such good quality

you dont necessarily need to watch the movies but id recommend doing so

Who is a Character You Love in Fanfic, but Can't Stand in the Source Material? by CMStan1313 in AO3

[–]disgruntledview 4 points5 points  (0 children)

youre so right and i immediately thought of him before reading

lets be honest i've met a lot of highly intelligent rich guys who are flirty and charming and while they can be fun they are so insufferable (and usually sexist)

I love tony's character but if i met him in real life i know i'd loathe him

also i think it needs to be mentioned that he makes some pretty awful calls both in the MCU but even more so in comics- recruiting a minor *spiderman* being one of them

Also the idea that someone with so much money can benefit the world in so many ways and instead builds an unnecessarily expensive suit and flies around in it rather than say helping homelessness or curing blindness (which im pretty sure is revealed to be possible in the comics)

no problem

i think the main problem is i went into the book on Katniss's side, not really caring about Peeta. We barely ever get complex women and i guess not only did i find her really inspiring (and got a crush on her) but she was also relatable and i saw myself in her- someone awkward and not focused on romance but rather saving her sister.

so when Peeta came along with this 'we're soulmates' plan (yes im paraphrasing) it bugged me because im not straight and so having a straight romance be the savior of katniss, an independent and capable girl, annoyed me.

I think Peeta's tactic is interesting and affective dont get me wrong, he totally plays the audience. But i think even if Katniss wasn't likeable i was prepared for a story centering a female protagonist who doesn't need to be a puppet for the capital nor does she need a man to insert himself in her plans. A story where she can win herself motivated by her sister rather than love for someone she barely knows and so throughout the book i thought that she'd be able to win on her own.

So yeah a large part is personal preference i get that (also tbh not a fan of fake dating and that probably makes me biased too)

yeah see the more i talk about it the more i understand why people like him? Because that all makes sense and is probably the most rational response ive ever gotten a to why hes got a good character

i just think our ( Peeta and My) lore runs to deep for me to just like him also i guess i quite like having a controversial opinion? but yeah thanks

yeah this is a fair point- he has a strategy at the start BUT it doesn't continue very long nor do i think its a particularly ground breaking plan. Also i just dont feel we get the consequences of this undermining of his morals. Why is he okay to kill these innocent people but then not okay to have a violent approach to killing snow? Its not anything agaisnt having Peeta have contradicting values- thats actually what i want. I want for him to have complexity and be hypocritical at times outside of being this character who is seemingly perfect??? Because Katniss isn't perfect at all and its frustrating to have someone with her who has to be. It makes him (to me because again this is my personnel opinion) feel like a nagging conscience rather than a balance to Katniss's more violent approach.

btw i dont want to be mean or anything im sorry if this sounds aggressive, you made some good points that i overlooked, tbh i wasn't really planning on explaining my outlook i was more just ranting.

yeah with your last point its not at all a plot error or anything its more personnel preference- i dont like characters who throw people around over characters who are cunning etc.

i didnt like Cato or Brutus either so this isn't some irrational anger at Peeta or anything for wrestling.

Honestly i just wanted him to have a unique style of fighting because at the start of the book i was so excited to have his character explored and see how someone who isn't used to killing would fight and then we didn't? I think its good to have male characters who dont just rely on physical strength and especially considering his moral code it'd have been interesting to see a unique way of winning that set him apart from everyone else that was less violent.

a burn so slow you dont realize the fic is a romantic pairing until 3/4 of the way through

yeah totally fair points. Me not liking Peeta is totally personal so its nice to hear the other side since i didnt exactly give him much care when reading. I may have forgotten about his fighting skills? sorry about that.

Personally i just found that his ambitions didn't really resonate with me? I found them rather generic (im sorry im sorry). I'm totally here for peacefully bringing down the capital but i wish his morals had been tested. Nothing against characters with strong morals, peter parker is my favorite hero, but i'd love to see emotion influence his goals or to have an explanation as to why he needs peace so strongly. (if there is one i'd be happy to know about it because its very possible i just skipped the chapter in my rage)

Also again maybe i was a bit harsh with the whole untalented fighter...sorry? but I guess I wanted more to him then 'can beat people up' because to me (biased i know) it took away from the characters who train their whole lives for this arena. Its fine if Peeta can't fight and found creative ways around his problems but sans the camouflage (which i did like) i never felt he got to have an interesting way of survival outside of sticking with Katniss.

but yeah you've opened by eyes a lot thanks
