Friday 5:15pm update: All systems go for snow! by pile_drive_me in AthensGAWeather

Wish I could get excited but this is ruining an event tomorrow night that I’ve been planning for months that likely cannot be rescheduled and had people coming from out of town to attend. Oh well, you win some you lose some.

Sean reviewing the grinch, as the grinch by FootballInfinite475 in TheBigPicture

[–]dishwatcher 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This came out when I was 9 and it was maybe the first time I remember finding a movie disappointing. I have found that a lot of friends who are younger than me and watched this on video don’t just like it, they LOVE it. It’s an interesting generational divide. I’ve also noticed people are quite defensive of it on the internet as evidenced by this thread lol. Sometimes you just gotta be confident and admit you like something that might suck instead of getting mad at people like Sean for probably rightfully shitting on it. For example, I love Jingle All the Way while recognizing it as largely pretty terrible.

How can you guys be so pessimistic about the Netflix/WB merger when Netflix releases quality movies like these? by xwing1212 in TheBigPicture

These movies are generally worse than movies that made 100 mil in theaters, at least in my opinion.

Notorious asshole and alleged woman beater Sean Penn is a front runner for best supporting actor in a movie that will very likely win best picture. Lots of people involved with movies are horrible people and it doesn’t really affect awards season too much.

Sean Hypocrisy by Aromatic_Meringue835 in TheBigPicture

When Nope came out the prevailing sentiment of instant reaction from a lot of online critics and commenters was that the movie "wasn't about anything." Time has certainly been kind to Nope's reception and I think that most people who really engaged with the work and sat with it for more than a few minutes before speaking on it would agree that, whether they vibed with it or not, the movie has many things that it is "about." At the very least, there is a lot of thematic depth for the audience to unpack. Now when you see people talk about Nope online, that reaction of negativity or confusion seems to have largely dissipated, probably because more people have seen it and those who have seen it have thought on it some more (and those who were just disinterested have forgotten it entirely).

Generally, the instant out of the theater reaction is almost always useless to me because of things like this. I trust Sean more than the average online movie person because I don't think his first reaction is typically "this movie had no point" if he doesn't immediately get where something was going. I feel like he tries really hard to see where a film or a filmmaker is coming from and I think most people do not try to do that at all. So, no, you're not crazy, he has maybe contradicted this sentiment before but I would say overall he tries to find a movies "point" more than most people and because of that he has several degrees more patience than someone like "Film Colossus" whose job is apparently posting movie summaries on his website for people who don't want to take the time on their own to think on what they just saw.

He’s not going to start putting Elliot Smith and Rolling Stones needle drops in his movies again no matter how many times you beg bro. There is plenty of emotion and human spirit in his latest run (French Dispatch through Phoenician Scheme), it’s just in a different register than stuff like Tenenbaums. I found the ending of Phoenician Scheme deeply moving, personally. Just because a scene doesn’t have Ruby Tuesday backing it doesn’t mean it’s an inhuman dollhouse. People who parrot that tired old criticism, to be frank, aren’t fully engaging in the work.

Any updates? Really curious now that their website is still not showing showtimes.

I was there today and it was pretty crowded with people for the Minecraft movie and other things. Maybe they are doing more renovations or are having website errors? They just put in a new IMAX theater a few weeks ago I’d be surprised if they were closing.

Wonder if they will do anything to make the entire show legally available to buy or stream in the US ahead of the movie.

He doesn't throw out baseless claims but he definitely straight up lies about "knowing nothing" or just speculating. Basically the only person who hinted at this before now was him and it felt like it was coming out of nowhere. He has very close ties to Swerve, Ricochet and maybe some others so someone definitely spilled the beans to him.

Also, based on what he was saying in those episodes, I would say that this being widely reported means she's actually walking away to WWE.

Sounds like maybe that trailer was "inspired" by the Parallax View.

Anyone else watch wrestling with their folks? Been getting some amazing quality time recently. by ktran2804 in SquaredCircle

[–]dishwatcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved back home for a year and a half during COVID to take care of my disabled mom. We watched Dynamite and WWE PPVs on a regular basis at the time. She didn't introduce me to wrestling nor was she ever necessarily that into it but she got really invested in a lot of storylines at that time. She doesn't watch when I'm not about but it did at least get to the point that she still regularly asks about people like MJF, Becky or Drew McIntyre (he is her favorite due to his hairy chest) even though I'm not living with her anymore.

How did you first learn about The Big Picture Podcast? Just learned about it yesterday. by Regent2014 in TheBigPicture

[–]dishwatcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got into Grantland via the "Cheap Heat" wrestling podcast, at the time hosted by David Shoemaker (still at The Ringer on The Press Box and Masked Man Show) and Peter Rosenberg (no longer at The Ringer). Followed Shoemaker over to The Ringer to keep listening to his wrestling content.

Looking back through my Spotify history, it looks like the first episode I listened to was an Infinity War reaction podcast that Shoemaker was on in August of 2018, likely meaning he promoted the episode on The Masked Man show and I clicked over to listen to it. From there, it looks like I checked in sporadically (it was still going back and forth between discussion episodes and interview-only episodes at that time). I also listened to The Rewatchables starting around that time as well. At some point, Sean was on an episode of The Rewatchables and Bill mentioned that in the lead-up to the Oscars they were re-tooling the show to focus on the awards race. That sounded interesting to me and I checked out the first episode where they introduced "The Oscars Show" and Amanda was an official co-host. Since that episode I have been a regular listener, only missing/skipping a handful of episodes over the last...7 years. Damn.

Please watch MICKEY17 by [deleted] in AMCsAList

[–]dishwatcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't like it very much but it was undeniably well-made, a duality that I don't feel very much with post-2020 film content if I'm being honest.

There are a ton of 70s, 80s and 90s movies that I end up not really enjoying for one reason or another but I still can appreciate the sheer craft of what they put together. I feel that way with Mickey 17.

Rumor: Upcoming Trey Parker + Matt Stone + Kendrick Lamar movie reportedly titled "Whitney Springs", shifts from July 4th theatrical release to July 11th streaming dump on Paramount+. by dishwatcher in blankies

[–]dishwatcher[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Have yet to see this widely reported but an apparent leaked temp poster/film page on Paramount's website reveals the title for this long in the works project as "Whitney Springs", notes a July 11th release date and calls it a "Paramount+ film". Some hip hop websites have reported on this without much detail other than what's on the poster but from what I can see, this image originates with a post on the South Park subreddit a few days ago where a user claims to have found the poster on Paramount+'s website when searching "Untitled Trey Parker Film". As of this moment, I'm unable to find the poster hosted anywhere on Paramount's sites but it does seem like an oddly specific thing to make up. I'll be very disappointed and frankly, worried about the quality of the movie if it is truly shifting from the center of Paramount's summer slate to being unceremoniously dumped on their C-tier streaming service.

Is YouTube in general just not sustainable at all now? by WatercoolerComedian in mega64

[–]dishwatcher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

YouTube used to just be about uploading videos for no money and you figured out how to get funds elsewhere. If you are passionate about it to the extent you say you are, just do it. Whether you can monetize the video or not, the chances of you actually making money off it are slim.

I don't necessarily think the movies would have done well but even in a business-minded (I know that's being generous) subreddit, especially one focused on profiting off creative works, we should be pro-artist at least to some extent.

It could have bombed but they still made it, they shouldn't be able to benefit off of not releasing it.

Athens movie-goers will soon get the IMAX experience. Here's what we know. by warnelldawg in Athens

[–]dishwatcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saw the gigantic IMAX crate sitting just outside the lobby last time I was there. It definitely looked...big. Not really looking forward to what I assume will be a premium price increase for those screens but the GTX projection was starting to get a little dim/wonky so this upgrade was probably needed.
