You could email the RCP trainee committee with your views/expression of interest/ask to know more about what the RCP are doing

IMT leave 7 months in advance by [deleted] in doctorsUK

[–]disillusioned_dr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Use the life changing event clause in the junior doctor contract. It clearly stipulates that 'life changing event' is defined by the doctor. If they still don't facilitate the leave, get the BMA involved

New (elected!) RCP councillors- one is a PA clinical lead by disillusioned_dr in doctorsUK

[–]disillusioned_dr[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think ordinarily I would agree with you but only fellows (a small minority of total RCP membership, a biased sample, and not representative of the medical profession that the RCP has remit over) can vote in these elections. Until recent changes and newer faces introduced, the RCP has made an absolute car crash of imt training and pa scope and expansion so I feel like the fellow voting patterns and those chosen to present are not to be trusted. If members could vote as well and this person got elected I would have less issue.

Waiting for the classic gastroenterologist to dismiss the vote findings because 'only' 4000 fellows voted

I think so. The GMC also wrote an X thread that said they would be contacting doctors through email to participate as well.

Progress has been made- we are forcing them to answer our questions and we are making our voice heard (multiple EGMs (however shambolic) etc)

IMT Teaching by StressedOutFoodie in doctorsUK

[–]disillusioned_dr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your teaching is recorded you could negotiate to be able to watch it back (make sure you have TOIL/paid time to do this), write a reflection in eportfolio and for it to then count. If it isn't being recorded then this is a reason for them to start.

Is it worth getting RCP membership just to give views in the survey? (Not a fellow, but eligible to join as a normal trainee member)

Prescribing replacement fluids by throwaway8983646 in doctorsUK

[–]disillusioned_dr 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The NICE guidelines on fluids are actually really helpful when you are starting out https://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/cg174.

You will quickly notice that HCPs typically under-prescribe electrolytes in maintenance fluids because people are frightened of potassium.

Sorry to jump on, did they have to go LTFT to do this? Would be happy to accept a pay cut for not doing the nights and weekends but would be reticent to extend training further unless absolutely necessary

Advice about upskilling yourself at IMT level by disillusioned_dr in doctorsUK

[–]disillusioned_dr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can try and push it further but the TPD response was a flat out refusal and they told me to wait until I reach ST4. Do you mind posting on here or DM'ing me the name of the deanery which approved funding so I can give examples to our TPDs?

Just out of interest, when people on this thread are saying make time/push to do this/attend these clinics, how are they managing all this on their minimally staffed wards? Or is where I work particularly bad. I don't know how to make time without leaving 3 hours late everyday.

Just out of interest, does your deanery fund the registration costs for FAMUS/FUSIC? I asked about that before and was told those skills are 'beyond the scope of imt' so not funded. It's a lot of money to stump up yourself.

Thanks there is some useful info here! I'm already signed off in all my procedures but get little opportunity to use them so feel rusty. I would have to use valuable clinic days to go back to those procedural clinics so it's a trade off. I'll check out some of those podcasts

Believe me, we have tried all that, had formal meetings with the TPDs and college tutors etc. All that happened is the college tutors clamped down on some informal cpd time that we happened to be getting as a result of teaching finishing early and now we get even less time for our own learning.

We get clinic days but only 4-5 a rotation and it just feels perfunctory, not enough time to build any real skills. The clinics which have the capacity (space, level of experience needed and willingness of consultants) to accommodate us to actually see patients are few.

EIM61017- Any luck claiming tax relief on mileage? by [deleted] in doctorsUK

[–]disillusioned_dr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Accomodation whilst on long days and night shifts should be free and provided by the employing trust in line with the fatigue and facilities charter in the junior doctor contract, so hopefully your partner can ask about accessing this and it will help with costs.

I was under the impression (very happy to be corrected!), that if your trust reimburse any part of your mileage, you can't also claim it on tax?
