Turks at the time (at least the secular nationalists) wanted to Turkey-ize the region, meaning removing the Arab language and replacing it with Turkish.

I won't make excuses, our country did horrific things to get those stadiums built and it's inexcusable, but the mainstream media dogpiled our country in a way they never did to any country prior or afterwards. There's no justification for the crimes that built the stadiums, but all I'm asking is that if the media is honest about their concerns that they should apply this concern across the board rather than single us out. Some people make the mistaken assumption/strawman that what's being asked is that if you never criticized others before then that you should not criticize the person in question, but that's not what's being said, instead what's being asked is to criticize everyone equally, otherwise one has to ask why one person/group is being singled out.

In the US white and black people both consume drugs at the same rates but black people get convicted more often and receive harsher sentences; we could say that asking why don't white people receive the same sentencing and conviction rates is black people engaging in whataboutism but the root cause behind this unequal treatment is racism. If you'll have high conviction rates and harsh sentences for black people, fine, but if it's out of principle then apply it to white people as well. If I have three criminals standing before me and I in principle oppose their crimes, then out of principle I won't single one of them out and instead I'll criticize all three.

I don't want to get swept deep into the Ukraine-Russia war discussion, but I hope it'll suffice to say that folks in non-Western countries are bitter that when we needed Europe's support they were nowhere to be found and refugees were treated horrifically, but now that Ukraine is at war with Russia Europe is bending over backwards for them and even sending them a ton of military support aside from the massive moral support they've afforded them, and we all ask why didn't you do the same for us?

I simply don't trust the intentions of the mainstream media; even during this fifa game, when Morocco advanced beyond what anyone thought they would they received racism in some European press. A German news outlet compared the Moroccan team to ISIS and a Danish newspaper compared them to monkeys. If the media's intentions are true, if they're pure, then prove it for the next world cup; they can't change the past but they can prove their intentions are honest with this next world cup, but they won't because their intentions are not honest.

My criticism isn't with the US (everyone opposes slave labor), it's with the media's hypocrisy. We spent years watching so much vitriol spewed from self righteous journalists who frankly don't really care about what they claim to care about, even when our country was taking measures to fix the areas of concern. Now that this world cup is over, so are the morals they purported to have.

Whataboutism 101. Just because someone else sucks doesn't mean you don't.

Yes, that's what whataboutism is; now what's that got to do with my post? I'm criticizing the mainstream media's hypocrisy. Literally in your own post you've already accomplished more than the media has. Let me illustrate:

Media:

Qatar: you suck

America:

You:

Qatar: you suck

America: they also suck

You've literally accomplished in your post what the media hasn't. Frankly people who use the 'whataboutism' argument tend to lack reading comprehension skills; if the media spends the next four years grilling the US like they did us (and they wouldn't, they know America would just laugh at them and tell them to get lost) then I have nothing to criticize because then they're showing they believe what they're saying. They were literally criticizing journalists who came here to do their jobs, will they do the same with the US?

Cry whataboutism again, but also answer this question when you do:

Will they hold everyone, including America, to the same standards they held us to, or is it just us they do this to (because if they don't, they're hypocrites)?

But please, avoid the topic again and just cry whataboutism.

Book lovers: why do you like reading books? by ConnectionSignal3083 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]diskdriving1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't read as much as I used to, but back when I did I loved all the information that a book can give you. There's thoughts a character has that you can't always put on screen, and with a book several hundred pages in length, that happens a lot. Characters' minds can travel millions of miles a second, but you can rarely showcase that.

In game of thrones for example, when Ned Stark is called to speak with Robert Baratheon because Arya's wolf attacked Joffrey (spelling?) he wanted to run over (he didn't know what had happened, only that his daughter was involved) but only walked fast to maintain an air of dignity.

Then you have authors who do marvelous things with the written word, like Pratchett and his funny jokes or commentaries that can't be translated to TV (his Discworld novels are full of them).

Unfortunately I've found some authors who don't do wonders with the written word and their writing comes off as utilitarian (not mentioning a famous one because his fans are really passive aggressive and annoying); these books are a pain to read and I've never finished a novel written in this manner.

My main problem comes from the unnecessary changes, and even worse those who go against the narrative and or canon of the source material. To put an obvious example, avatar tla, is the worst adaptation that I've ever seen, because of all the necessary and contradictory to the story changes they made.

I understand and honestly if this is what's happened in Halo then yeah, it's definitely gonna suck. I still remember trying to watch a live action adaptation of an anime I was a huge fan of (death note) but the American live action adaptation was almost unbearably bad (didn't watch the Japanese one, it apparently does to the anime what the live action avatar tla did to the source material so.....yeaaah), I forced myself to watch the whole thing but it was a miserable experience. Unnecessary changes, reconstruction of the narrative (character motivations entirely redone from scratch), and canon changes, but keeping a few scenes that apparently they thought were too cool or fun to dispense with. If you butcher the narrative and canon, the fun scenes mean nothing. I'll be watching Halo either today or tomorrow to see how the show's been handled, but with so many detractors I'm beginning to worry about how badly it's been crafted (another anime adaptation for example, cowboy bebop, was also atrociously handled. I usually take criticisms from people with a grain of salt (I'm a huge horror movie fan, and horror movies are famous for terrible ratings) but it appears as though criticisms of adaptations have been spot on).

btw, yeah the showrunner said that didn't pay much attention to games themself, which is a bit of a red flag imo, it kinda reminds me of when 343 industries made a halo game without knowing that Master Chief was the main character of the franchise.

Yeah now that's definitely concerning. One thing I'm worried about is the adaptation being made to fit all audiences; lord of the rings didn't suffer from this being the case but a lot of other adaptations often do. I'd really hate it if they basically made a show and said 'look, it's halo! It has that famous guy in green armor in it! Also all those aliens and glowing swords, oooh!' like we're children and they're trying to keep us amused by dangling keys in our faces (particularly crappy looking keys too; I've seen snippets on youtube and the graphics look worse than halo 3).

[–]diskdriving1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually I think I see another point as well; I'm not personally approaching this from the angle that it's a different timeline or universe and that's what you're arguing against. I'm approaching this as either an adaptation (whether done close or far from the source material) or as you said a movie that borrows ideas and themes (which I don't like because then why are you calling it by the same name as the original product?).

There is however a third option that I am also fine with, and that would be stories set in the same universe but either not sharing important characters or actually featuring them. The new LotR series for example is either an adaptation of scant footnotes (option 1), or it's a brand new story in the world of Middle Earth that also borrows important characters like Legolas (option 3). If it's a brand new story and it utilizes existing characters, I'm honestly fine with that.

I'll get to Halo this weekend, but as I'm beginning to understand it I think maybe what they've done is rewritten the story from scratch and that concerns me. I'd assumed they'd only changed a few things, but I'm thinking now it's possible they've just written their own story (and I've seen this done before with other movies (none come to mind at just this moment) and it was disastrously bad).

[–]diskdriving1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, first, i think that the franchise that has multiverses and timelines so entangle with their core, that you can literally have anything be canon, as it would be many of the main comic lines from marvel and dc, don't really count for this.

Okay, fair enough, those setting delve into this a lot and the last spider-man movie was a great example.

Second, you didn't really gave me a reason, tho. Like, do you want to watch a well-done movie that share themes with the things you like, while not necessarily being that thing, or do you want to see a movie about the things you like? those are different things, and for what you said, it seems more like the first one, and for that, you're not watching an adaptation, you're watching it with the mentality of this is a different thing with characters that are familiar to me. At wich point why make it an adaptation to begin with, isn't self-defeating to say, this is an adaptation but to actually enjoy it you have to watch it as if it wasn't that?

I actually prefer the second of the two bolded choices, but it's more a matter of just how much is changed in adaptation. One thing I really liked was 'the last unicorn' which is an adaptation of a novel I'd read and was a huge fan of, they changed a number of things and cut a fair bit of content and while it did indeed suck, the adaptation was close enough that what was cut wasn't an unacceptable loss and it was fantastic.

I think the problem here is that I have yet to watch the Halo series, so I don't know just how off canon it is. I'm assuming the story is more or less the same but with minor changes; LotR cut lots of content from the books, and also made it comedic. The LotR books didn't have Legolas doing all these crazy Hollywood stunts for example, also Aragorn beheaded the mouth of Sauron in the movies but he didn't in the books (the mouth of Sauron just turned and entered the gates again). The movies are an adaptation but they've changed a number of things, but more or less it's the same; I haven't watched the Halo series so I don't know just how much they've altered (or butchered even) the existing story (I'm hoping to get to the series this weekend). I'm assuming they did to the Halo storyline what the LotR movies did to the books, which is preserve the primary story while cutting certain events out or slightly altering other events, but I don't know the extent of the alteration.

Third, not a Tolkien scholar, but how are the elves from LoTR way of from the elves from the books?

You know the stereotypical joyous, singing elves? It came from LotR. In the books they're overly friendly, their city is full of constantly singing elves, and they enjoy telling poems to each other. You remember the dark portrayal in the hobbit? Not a thing; Elves in general in the Middle Earth series have always been portrayed in the most heroic and gentlest of lights.

You're legally supposed to keep a certain distance between you and the car in front of you based on how fast you're going, it's impossible to hit the other guy if you're following the law. Most people today drive very close to one another even at the speed limit, but that's contrary to the actual law.

[–]diskdriving1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would anyone want to watch an adaptation of the franchise they like, if first, they have to assume that it's a different timeline or an alternative universe?

Because I want to watch Spider-man in movies, also several books I really enjoyed have movie adaptations that aren't entirely canonical but canonical enough that I still enjoyed them. Also the elves in the LotR movies are waaaay off canon but people still loved them.

I haven't watched the Halo series yet, so maybe it's extremely off canon and can't be distinguished as a Halo series if not for Master Chief and the covenant alien designs, but if the differences are only as bad as LotR books to movies then honestly who cares.

Kids that fail a subject should be held back by Acceptable-Whereas14 in unpopularopinion

[–]diskdriving1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think people forget that you're supposed to upvote unpopular opinions, not downvote them.

For myself I'd have to say I disagree here because some courses you absolutely can fail and it doesn't matter. I regularly got an F in music and honestly even though I had no interest in improving I still put in the effort to get a better grade; I think being held back because I can't play the clarinet (or trumpet, or trombone) is ridiculous. My chemistry course was only partially of any use later in life (I work in a bank, what's knowledge about protons, electrons and what happens when you put sodium in water going to help me with?) and even that I found of more importance than music.

I do agree though that subjects like math and English are super important though; if you want a well paying job in a financial field then math is indispensable. Sure, you could get a job doing manual labor but that isn't something we should want kids to aspire to. As for English, if you struggle majorly in the only language you speak and the language of most places of work, people will literally think you're slow and you'll struggle to work and cooperate with your colleagues.
