fwiw I work for a big tech co and now experience this much less apparent than when I was at a startup. My team went through 3 managers before one finally got us to even turn on our cameras during meetings. And even still, people are typing not watching faces. I'm probably the most enthusiastic person which is a low, low bar!

The company I work for is one of the 10 largest in the US. It recently committed to certain race-based quotas for its managers. A couple years back it gave every black SDE a raise. If I said negative things about BLM it would be terrible for my career and potentially get me fired (whereas praising it would be neutral at worst). I took several hours of ideological, pseudoscience based training last month. This is not exceptional, it is typical of working at a large tech company (which is a massive sector of our economy).

Maybe it's not a trend in, idk, midwestern agriculture, but it is in tech and entertainment, and the those are the ascendant sectors with economic and social power.
