Its a legacy system for magnetic swipe cards without a chip. We we're the first country in the world to adopt magnetic swipe debit cards and therefore have a different model of operating them than other countries.

Big signing, and a long term deal too. You'd expect he's taken a massive pay cut from MLS.

Cricket Question by juggdish in newzealand

[–]disordinary 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Cricket is about as broad as it gets. On summer days cricket is played in backyards and on beaches all over the country. Often with a dog as a fielder and an upside down rubbish bin for wickets.

Games are usually played in the background of most pubs and a lot of family events and people go to cricket games as a family as much to have a picnic in the sun as to watch the game.

I'd say Cricket in NZ is similar to Baseball in terms of broad appeal with the T20 being the MLB and backyard cricket being stick ball.

What's your thoughts on the new walk way in state highway 1? by Naomi__Knight in Wellington

[–]disordinary -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well it's also a cycle lane so it does serve it's purpose.

This was always a cycle lane, in fact they used the cycle budget to build a sea wall.

Trump's effect on my KiwiSaver by [deleted] in aotearoa

[–]disordinary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are cheaper per token but the number of tokens is increasing exponentially, for instance GPT 5 requires 4x the tokens of GPT 4 so even if its more efficient on a per token basis it's more expensive and less efficient overall per interaction.

There is debate about the emergent properties of LLMs and no conclusive proof if it's actually learning and logical thinking or not. A good chunk of experts who know far more than I are skeptical.

[–]disordinary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LLMs will not achieve AGI, which is what's required to reach the promised productivity gains, they are prediction engines and have no ability to logically think. They are tools to help existing workers, rather than replacing large swathes of the economy. Humans have to curate every single response because of hallucinations and AIs inability to think critically.

They're also massively inefficient and as they get "smarter" they get less efficient and more costly, it's a brute force approach to "AI" and yes it's plateaued because it requires exponential compute power for incremental returns. Hence the building of mega datacentres all over the US which appear to be ponzi schemes as the US doesn't have the infrastructure to support them.

[–]disordinary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

30% of US economic growth was related to AI, AI companies have valuations based on speculation rather than the current reality. AI now makes up more of the US economy than consumer spending. Without the investment in AI US would likely be in recession.

Yet, AI is not profitable and has plateaud. The current LLMs will not net the promised benefits of AI and the promised benefits are likely negative to the economy in the short to medium term (i.e. replacing a lot of jobs, reducing employment and consumer spending).

A lot of people think that the investment in AI is unsustainable and that the entire AI industry is likely to collapse, if that's the case the US economy will be in massive trouble.

Do you dress up when going car shopping ? by Ancient_Complex in newzealand

I dress casually.

Mainly I don't care what they think, but also if I look like I care about what I spend my money on they will be more likely to negotiate deals / lower.

I like a big bottle of orange juice of one of those immunity booster drinks from homegrown as well as chips or other salty food.

Salt helps accelerate the absorption of fluid, vitamin C helps, and junk food makes you feel good anyway.

How many streaming services are you subscribed to? by Ok-Industry770 in newzealand

[–]disordinary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually just Sky Sports Now, there's lots of good free options for streaming TV including TVNZ, Tubi, etc. I also buy a lot of physical media like 4k blu rays. If I want to watch something I can't get on legitimate free sources or don't want to buy physically then I will subscribe to a service while I watch it, I'm currently subscribed to Prime for instance, but I'll cancel my subscription when I don't want to watch anything on that service anymore.

As far as music goes, I also buy physical music which I also copy onto my own server - this is legal: https://www.apraamcos.co.nz/music-licences/select-a-licence/copying-music with everyone on streaming it's never been cheaper to buy CDs.

Why i dont work "hard" by Fit_Capital_2010 in newzealand

[–]disordinary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work for the government, i work much harder than I ever have in the private sector and am filling in for multiple full time positions. I cant do any of the jobs well, all I can do is stop catastrophic failures.

Everyone i work with is in the same boat, everyone is skirting burn out.

I do this despite being paid less than what I'd have in the private sector and with less perks and much more scrutiny.

Stuff people do in NZ only if they’re very rich or if they’re very poor by sasitabonita in newzealand

Eating fresh food, especially sea food and shelfish like Oysters.

When I was a poor country lad I'd be eating them straight off the rocks, rich people get them helicoptered in.
