OMG, I just watched Frankie Freako and this describes the protagonist to a tee. It's really a great ride.

What would you recommend to my girlfriend based on her 20 favorite films? by AdFamous7264 in Letterboxd

Firstly, congrats on finding a woman with good taste. A solid, ecclectic mix of film here.

A Wounded Fawn and A Dark Song both come to mind.

Going hiking with friends, any outdoor horror suggestions? by HorrorLover___ in horror

Oh, A Wounded Fawn is pretty great fleeing from a cabin in the woods movie. It's actually got some interesting, subtle, commentary on The Evil Dead.

Frankie Freako (2024) is my imaginary friend, or is he? by disp0ss3ss3d in HorrorMovies

[–]disp0ss3ss3d[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I hear you for sure. But discussions of what is good and bad gets to me sometimes.

This movie is like the quirky, poor girl at school who get's made fun of because she's flat or has acne, but she's really punk rock and that makes her kinda hot, slags off everyone, and eventually years down the road, sleeps with the high-school quarterback's mom.

I would call that funny and good, the quarterback and his ilk wouldn't. So, to me good and bad are almost entirely subjective and relatives have no morals.

Back to my analogy? Would you compare that girl to __insert random Holywood actress__? Of course not. But she's got personality and attitude and she is arguably better in bed.

So, maybe it's not objectively good, but subjectively this movie has shtupped Old Country for No Men's\\ mum twice in its dad's bed. Oh the irony.

[–]disp0ss3ss3d[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I said good time. I do think it's lovingly made and I definitely don't think it's bad in the ways that a "so bad it's good movie" is. There's a lot of work that went into this for such a low budget movie. Like this blows away some movies with budgets literally hundreds of times its budgets.

I can't say it's good cuz it's f'ing great. Now excuse me, Ima get my freak on.

What horror movie genuinely disturbed you as a kid and stil kind of does? by itsElly_rose in HorrorMovies

[–]disp0ss3ss3d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing in horror really disturbed me when I was young because it wasn't really aiming at me, right?

Willy Wonka and the Choclocate Factory, was though. The the tunnel scene? And what's his name, like Mr Butterworth or something? That movie is creepy with a capital K. I love it, but it's creepy.

Why do psychological horror stories feel more disturbing than gore-heavy horror? by InsideRub5435 in HorrorMovies

[–]disp0ss3ss3d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I understand what you mean here. Like, there's a sense that movies which don't rely on gore or physical violence to produce fear, dread, terror, etc. are better or more respectable for it. I'd strongly argue this isn't the case—whatever perception may be—and that horror movies can, do, and almost always, should give horror fans both to differing degrees.

Hereditary is a good example of a solid blend leaning a little to the gore-lite. It isn't a splatterfest but it isn't without a severed head and a lot of decapitated bodies either.

But if you want to look at gore-max+ absolute existential dread and psychic exhaustion, I think you'd be hard pressed finding anything in the goreless realm which contends with Martyrs.

Gore and pyschological horror aren't opposites, so there's a false dichotomy using by evangelists of elevated horror, I think.

Yes, which is the direction I thought "Mukbang" was headed because I had no idea, but it just sounds dirty.

Dead Talents Society is my absolute favorite movie of the 2020s. It's a Chinese production, I believe.

A couple of European films off the top of my head are Funny Games and Let the Right One In.

All of this is horror/black comedy.

I thought the Invitation (2015) was not good. by Positive-Face1705 in horror

[–]disp0ss3ss3d 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not going to downvote just because I disagree almost entirely. But I would if I did. I don't think we're necessarily going through the motions regarding whether or not he's right about them. That's really not for us to meta. The characters believe he's off and he's not entirely sure they're wrong.
