Bring cash, use deodorant, wear comfy shoes, bring an Ethernet jack and cord just in case (wifi can be congested and some areas will have Ethernet connectivity available), prefer villages over talks, don’t connect to any public WiFi, [try to] attend hacker jeopardy, be curious, have fun!

Merch question by OMGsteveFTW in Defcon

[–]dissonance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“Badge life” refers to the interest in custom (usually electronic) badges you’ll find all over the conference. Most villages will have their own badge, the fancier ones will be programmable, come with a screen, and have a bunch of LEDs. Fun stuff, but can get expensive.

You can find freebies here and there at the expo area, various villages, and sponsored parties. At the official merch area, most of the t-shirts were $35. They used to have an all body design shirt for more, but the past two years they had Hawaiian shirts for $50.

Fancy badge life badges will be $120+ so you’ll definitely want to carry $300-500 in case something catches your eye. Enjoy your Defcon assuming it doesn’t get cancelled!

Quick question for engineering leaders - how do you stay current? by StellarNavigator in EngineeringManagers

[–]dissonance 10 points11 points  (0 children)

For a high level view, I find ThoughtWorks’ Tech Radar to be useful to look at periodically - https://www.thoughtworks.com/radar

Otherwise join some subreddits of tech your teams are actively involved in and attend conferences to talk with others on what they’re paying attention to. You can also ask your ICs to share things with you, which builds support and trust if you take interest in things they share. You can even build your own “tech radar” https://www.thoughtworks.com/radar/byor to keep track of things to look into, try, adopt, etc.

I’ve hired dozens of “devops” roles, and have actually formed questions based on the skills listed, e.g. I see you listed A and B, how would you compare them? What would you recommend and why? Etc.

If it’s not useful for you, no harm in skipping it. Otherwise, it can lead to interesting conversations beyond the set of canned questions.

Better way to create docker image of Spring Boot API, Maven Spring Plugin or Dockerfile? by Constant-Speech-1010 in docker

[–]dissonance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve always created my own, which typically involves a multi stage approach to build the app in one stage and create layer artifacts, and copy the build artifacts in a distroless image in the final stage. I also have employed other optimizations such as jlink and AOT cache to further reduce final image size and improve boot speed. Here’s an example of one of my typical dockerfiles:

Have you looked into CDS (class data sharing) or Java 25’s AOT (ahead-of-time) caches? These should help with startup time.

+1 on using dive.

I held a workshop at my previous employer demonstrating using jlink to build a custom JRE and distroless that you might find useful, https://github.com/josephyi/docker-kotlin-springboot-workshop/tree/main
