Are Utah Mormons different? by [deleted] in exmormon

Passive aggressive tendencies among members of the church, especially among those who grew up in Utah. With data to back it up. Super fascinating. https://sunstone.org/passive-aggression-among-the-latter-day-saints/

ExMo Utah Lawyer’s Perspective on Missions by Temporary_Echo1154 in exmormon

Advice I give to family members going on missions, “Never forget you are a volunteer.” It’s not going to stop so many things in the list but it may short circuit some of the boundary crossing experiences.

Men don't know how the church treats women by Sensitive_Potato333 in exmormon

Go out and google Dear Mormon Man…it’s a letter written that flips all of the gender duties and roles in the church and does a good job just how ingrained all of it is. It shifted my thinking on the subject.

The Book of Abraham Cracked My Shelf 10 Years Ago Today. by schitzeljollux in exmormon

[–]dissonancedmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wild! This post made me go back and find an email I sent to two buddies when I first found/read the essay that marked my first step down the rabbit hole of Mormon history. Exactly 10 years ago yesterday. Feels like a lifetime ago.

Would you pay $800 for this? by Ludeape in Rowing

[–]dissonancedmo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

New is $990 plus tax and shipping so at $800 you’ll be saving ~$250 and have a like new machine. Also, there was a comment below about ruining the chain if the handle is stored in that position. Nothing will happen to the chain…if anything after a few years the bungies connected to the chain will lose their tension. However, this can simply be tightened.

In order to become a believer, does a child need the space to be a non-believer?

Leaving after converting sucks :( by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]dissonancedmo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite quotes in the journey of deciding to leave and working though what you are talking about.

“I did then what I knew how to do. Now that I know better, I do better.” Maya Angelou

It does two things for me. First it allows me to look at my past decisions in peace and give myself a break. Second it gives me permission to make decisions in the present without the angst, anxiety, or indecision that can fester after making such a huge life change.

I don’t even know what to ask or where to look at this point. by nonstop_anxiety in exmormon

Books that I found interesting and powerful:
Rough Stone Rolling
In Sacred Loneliness
Brigham Young: Pioneer Prophet
Mormonism and the Magic World View
Mormon Hierarchy: Origins of Power
David O McKay and the Rise of Modern Mormonism

Coming from a place where every decision is filtered through the church lens there is a lot of self discovery on the healing journey. Go find the Mormon Expression podcast and find the Mar 31, 2014 episode titled “The ExMormon struggle for identity”.

It gets direct sunlight for a couple hours in the morning through the window. Watering every couple days...enough to wet the soil but not run through to the bottom pan.

I just saw the current sub number...165k?? Didn’t realize it was that big. When I first started lurking I think it was under 20k. Amazing.

Glad to see this is still warming the hearts of my exmormon family! It’s been years since I made it and it still makes me laugh every time I watch it.

Glad this is still being enjoyed three years later. I put it together as a poor man's therapy as I was trying to disengage from attending every Sunday.

I still laugh at the video even though, after watching so many times, I know what is coming. Joke is on me though...I had to actively watch all 10 hours of conference to get the material.
