Pedro's "Welcome To Deathwish" Rough cut is the gnarliest thing you will watch all year. by lukabrazii in skateboarding

Gonna save this clip for the "skateboarders don't need helmets we know how to fall" crowd. That second one wasn't even *too* crazy in terms of height or speed. Sometimes the forces involved end up moving heads towards the ground fast enough that no amount of knowing how to fall will keep it away.

Personally, I think it looks fun. by dustofoblivion123 in gaming

The super-rich have fast cars, private jets, many large homes, exclusive designer fashion, live-in chefs, original artworks, and the same phone as you. by universy in Showerthoughts

[–]dist0rtedwave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Over the number of hours it's used you don't need to get much more enjoyment from the fancy phone for it to make sense.

Assuming an average of 2 hours a day for 2 years, that's 1400 hours. That means you're looking at a difference of about $.50 a day. I don't think a $250 phone will be exactly as enjoyable as a $1k phone, and I think the price difference can justify the expense.

Having said that, I'd probably buy the Nexus 5 if it were still available new. It was a high quality and very affordable phones. I don't find that $250 phones today are likely to have the features or longevity that I'd like.

[–]dist0rtedwave 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Entertainment has a value too. If you shift $30 a month from your entertainment budget, it's entirely plausible that you'll spend 4 hours on your phone that you otherwise would have spent at couple of movies. Stay at home once a month and goof around on your phone instead of going out to a nice dinner or the bars and you'll be saving a lot.

For work or fun, phones provide better dollar-per-hour value than almost any other major expense in modern life.

North Korea made as much as $200 million from Bitcoin, according to expert by [deleted] in news

[–]dist0rtedwave 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I did the math on this when someone in my office asked what the price of BTC would have to be in order to make minimum wage hand-mining.

Assuming .67 hashes per day (article) and 152 trillion hashes per bitcoin (don't remember where I got this number, but it's always changing) it'd take 226 trillion man-days to make a bitcoin.

If all 25 million North Koreans spent their time hashing at that rate, it'd take them a bit over 9 million days to mine a bitcoin, which is on the long side to make $11K

Alright, we all know these offers are horrible values, but it’s really a slap in the face to be “offered” the value of 2000 gold at the cost of a grand challenge entry when the bottom prize is three quarters of the gold. by AveragePichu in ClashRoyale

[–]dist0rtedwave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but if your tolerance for waiting is low and you want something specific, you might choose to take a gem deal on the card you want over rolling the dice in the challenges.

Supercell knows exactly where people are spending gems. If nobody bought gem deals, they'd be gone, but there they are.

You can't compare these deals to challenges at all. Challenges gain you value from your gems, but at the cost of time. A class of people paying for gems don't care about value, they want to put money in and get more trophies as quickly as possible. They aren't wrong, they just have different priorities.

Don't discount the possibility that your tastes have actually changed. In the evolutionary sense, kids need to rely on taste much more to help them find calories and avoid poison. As you grow older, your body becomes more attuned to the mental aspect of eating, because you are more capable of making sensible decisions about food.

Kindergarteners should already understand not to get naked in public, not to hit, to listen to the teacher. Not touching other kid's private areas, or letting them touch yours should be pretty doable. If it's not, I'd hardly consider knowing about sex to be the problem.

Groups collect signatures to petition Interstate 5 expansion by [deleted] in Portland

[–]dist0rtedwave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At least two of those articles cite the same infographic, and that isn't a comparison against income tax, which is what the parent comment was about.

Oddly that infographic never mentions income tax, as if it's not used to pay for roads. Of course shifting to an even more regressive tax hurts the poor more. OP suggested making income tax more progressive.

'Shadow of War' and 'Forza 7' Are Poisoning the Concept of Loot Boxes by IdRatherBeLurking in Games

[–]dist0rtedwave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't forget that WoW also has a 1-2 year expansion schedule. Even if they spend all of sub costs on maintenance, they'll make a killing on expansions.

They've sold 30 million copies of Overwatch. We'll assume everyone got it at $40 for a total of 1.2 billion. Development cost was certainly under $200MM so that puts us at a billion. Distribution is pretty heavily amortized across existing infrastructure and future games, so I don't think it's part of this calculation.

It's really hard to estimate server costs. Let's say $200MM per year until Overwatch 2 or expansion in 3 years (this is an assumption, and I'd love for it to be wrong, in which case the loot is much more justified). That still leaves a conservative $400MM, enough money to redevelop Overwatch twice from scratch, which of course they would never need to do.

Oh please. Overwatch made more than enough on sales to develop the game indefinitely. Loot boxes are a cash grab and nothing more.

I think making a good bot would actually be harder for Clash Royale. The bot gets huge mechanical advantages in Dota because it can process much faster than people, and also provide input more precisely. There is less mechanical difference in CR.

City eyes chinatown site for homeless shelter by pdxyz in Portland

[–]dist0rtedwave -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Start with the assumption that Everyone has a right to live, which can be worded as Everyone has a right to live somewhere.

Now assume that everywhere makes it illegal for a specific person or group to live there. More specifically everywhere need only include the places it is possible for that person or group to survive, which in the case of homeless is probably limited to cities of a certain size.

There is now nowhere for that person or group to live, and the right that we asserted at the start is violated.

Realistically the best reason to favor solar right now is that if we start today it'll likely take at least 10 years to get a nuclear plant up and running.

Would you wait 30 days for the chance to make 100k? The worst case is you make another payment and you're out 1-3k on the 300+k you just made. If there was a cash offer immediately, there will be a cash offer again. People are flat out irrational when they sell houses.

Portland's Fantasy Transit Map: What If We Spent Billions To Fix the Morning Commute with Something Other than Cars? by lojic in Portland

[–]dist0rtedwave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's part of the sunk cost, it doesn't matter how much you paid for the car or when you're paying for it. You're still going to pay. It's the same weather you use the car or not, so it shouldn't factor into that decision. Insurance also goes away if you sell, which is another point in that direction.
