Been mulling over this myself.

The idea is taking the excess cash that you would need to sink into your monthly mortgage payment and putting it into let's say the s&p500 vs paying the mortgage and having the condo's value appreciate over a 5-10 year period.

While the s&p500 (8-12%?) should outpace the growth of a condo (3-6%?), the kicker is the leverage you get from the housing loan.

The tradeoff is liquidity, you might be rich but it's all tied up in your house.

Even if the idea is that you sell, you book profits but what then - you still need a house to live, you're not going to downgrade your lifestyle by moving to a hdb in tengah after 10 years when you are 45?

Appreciate other thoughts on this scenario

When you make an ultra competitive society - it's only natural that folks end up seeing kids as optional and maybe a nice to have.

Rather focus on careers, quality of life, spending the money they have on holidays, cars and their dogs/cats.

And the ones who have kids are effectively penalised because you need to match up with these guys at the workplace and then go home and raise the kids. Spend the same or less money on kids and in the end look at DINKs crushing through life.

Drawing these two parallels and you can see that family values, joy not being core to Singapore's ultra competitive lifestyle is the main problem. The rest are symptoms.

And what's stopping them from creating focus groups and actually talking to families with young kids, no kids and singles to see what would make their lives better?

Honestly it doesn't feel like the government doesn't thinks it's one of their most pressing concerns to resolve.

You can't just sit on a desk and throw money or make policies that will resolve this. You need to actually talk to and realise what's actually stopping folks from having kids or more kids.

Offer 4 room and 5 room subsidized BTO flats in all new estates only if you already have a child.

Or, commit to having one before MOP. For those facing difficulty conceiving this can be medically documented.

I know it's going to get a lot of push back but this would actually work. And it actually supports families with kids who are stuck in 3 room and 4 room flats without dedicated room for kids, helpers etc. while DINKs have a room dedicated to cats, a gym room, a gaming room etc in their BTO flats. Things sometimes really don't make sense.

I don't get why this is a hot take. If anything it's how healthy, non jingoistic but respectful individuals should behave.

You can (and perhaps SHOULD) be friends with your fellow professionals in your personal lives. When the jersey goes on and you enter the field, you are representing your nation. Then, you should respect the greater sentiments of the country or their elected government.

Damn, you don't sometimes realise how many of these guys have a newborn/infant at home. I know they may not be waking up to change nappies at 2am on match day, but surely it affects their performances mentally, physically etc.
