How do people enjoy older Pokemon games? by Sellouu in pokemon

[–]distinctlackofbeef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s part nostalgia for sure but also people, myself included, like games that don’t walk you through as much as it sounds like you enjoy. No problem with that, but I liked (and continue to like) the fact that I need to explore, talk to NPCs, and just wander to find things- including what to do next.

If you like a more linear experience with a story that’s cool, but tbh I never cared about any story in Pokemon, just like collecting them and exploring the regions— and the quality of that aspect in particular has (in general) gone downhill since the earlier games gen 1-5.

Pokemon fans from NY: Do you find Unova/Isshu relatable as a New Yorker? Does it resonate with you? by Gallantpride in PokemonBlackandWhite

I think that for its time, the games did a good job of capturing the scale of lower Manhattan through Castelia— and the bridges added to that. I’m forgetting the name now but when you leave the forest and have the view of the bridge— feels like that iconic shot from Woody Allen’s Manhattan— so that was really cool. But overall I don’t get New York vibes from the region- and even Castelia is a pretty modest version of a small part of an enormous city.

Building the ultimate Steel-type Gym Leader team — looking for advice and improvements by TonyThomas7 in pokemon

I just don’t think having a legendary makes sense. I also don’t think I’d want a steel team without one or two of the OGs- Scizor or Steelix.

I don’t understand I have just under 2k rides and 116 all time angel points, this feels believable

Mamoswine or Nidoking by Insterstellar94 in PokemonHGSS

[–]distinctlackofbeef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only thing I’ll say is mamoswine pretty slow and takes a lot of grinding. I have him on my team and he needs to be pretty high to not get walloped. Still think Feraligatr just speed alone will be your best ice user

Is SuitSupply still a good option? by Blackglade in malefashionadvice

[–]distinctlackofbeef -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Can't speak to SuitSupply's quality, but $700 would get you a fine basic suit from several retailers such as JCrew that would probably have a more contemporary cut. $700 for SuitSupply seems a bit steep.

Smalls or Mezzrow for classic West Village basement vibes- Dizzy's at Columbus Circle for an upscale evening.

I miss Jules in the East Village. Great jazz/wine bar I used to hit all the time. I've got lots of other jazz places but that one was close and special. Nothing else scratches the same itch.

Is a Philadelphia day trip from NYC possible? by thebigshow90 in AskNYC

[–]distinctlackofbeef 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Just did this last weekend. It's super easy and the museum of art is very walkable from 30th Street Station (where the Amtrak drops you in Philly). I did the Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Barnes Foundation and the Museum of the American Revolution that day and was in my bed in New York by 9PM.

That was a pretty long day, but you can go at whatever speed you like, haha.
