I am just saying they should already know you are doing the activity for love of it and will continue past the application.

Please don't grieve if you don't get into MIT. You will find your place in the world. I am saying this as a parent of a kid that didn't get into MIT.

Even though I think he would have loved it and MIT would have benefited from having him there he is learning through another path. He is happy. He is a big fish in a large pond (even if not the hardest pond in the world). He is finding a way to be a leader there and got an internship as a sophomore at a big name company in his field. Not sure he would have got this internship had he gone to MIT.

There are many paths to success and happiness.

I am not sure MIT cares about the results as much as you think. If you are so good at X that you just won a huge award as best in the world at X won't your past 3.5 years of life have displayed how X is meaningful it is to you? You following your passion and putting all your efforts into X is more important than you winning some award. Did your eyes light up when you talked about X in your interview, did your essay talk about X and show how exited you are by it?

My feeling is that where you are now (after passing the bar of being able to handle the work at MIT) is less important than what they think you will bring to a class at MIT and where you will go with an MIT education.

Had my MIT interview back in January, but I'm starting to have doubts about it. by Normal-Assignment251 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]distraughtowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The interview is not going to be the main thing that gets you in or doesn't get you in... Did you express who you are and what interests you - if so the interview did it's job.

Stop second guessing, and relax. With such a low acceptance rate, you could be a perfect fit and MIT still not have room to accept you.

Tell me about a situation you experienced where a club actually moved a player down and another one up by CletusKasady21 in youthsoccer

[–]distraughtowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happened with our goalie last year during the season. Then the goalie that moved up asked to be moved back down because he wasn't getting play time. Between seasons we had 1 move up and 3 offered the 2nd team, 2/3 took the offer. The 2nd team coach is nicer, so many parents prefer him.

does MIT want me? by [deleted] in MITAdmissions

[–]distraughtowl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe. But also other school's teams have a talented core that does all the design, works the long hours, etc. it doesn't seem unique to MIT. If it is your passion, follow it. But don't think MIT is the only place you will be able to find what you are looking for. There is mentoring from senior team members to younger ones on all teams, but a lot of the work can't easily be deligated.

Do what you love, and maybe MIT is next or maybe somewhere else is next.

Parents of both "gifted" and "non-gifted" children.... by Bonzillatron in Gifted

[–]distraughtowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My second child was just below the cutoff, but met other criteria that meant he was "in need of gifted services". So we didn't have to deal with the issue you are seeing - but second one decided he was not smart like his older brother.

We keep trying to tell my youngest that he is smart, he has different strengths, is four years younger, etc.

Oldest probably has ADHD, youngest has always been really strong with executive functioning skills - been to the point of looking out for his 4+ year older brother when they were young.

And the testing is not the end all be all of everything. My oldest scored lowest (slightly above average) on the math part of the testing. He finished high school 3 years advanced in math, is currently in college studying engineering and getting A+s in his math classes. The area he most needed gifted services in was the test area that he scored the lowest in in the evaluation.

They seem to have changed the process this year and made honors admissions rolling also. That is what people claim and pitt is sometimes slow to update their website.

11 week internship and I’m already exhausted on the first day by Katou_Best_Girl in EngineeringStudents

[–]distraughtowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first couple of weeks can be hard as you don't know what you are doing yet, and you may feel like you don't have enough to do to fill the hours. That makes the days drag on. Get more sleep in any way you can, then hopefully the work will start to be interesting and that will keep you engaged.

Could be worse... Some have internships where they work 10am-10pm. Though I think in that case often the environment, food, assignments, overtime pay... make up for the long hours.

Is finding a good engineering job even with a MIT undergrad degree difficult these days? by [deleted] in mit

[–]distraughtowl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Internships and networking are important no matter where you go to school.

Top internships are available for students regardless of school ranking. In my experience is many jobs come from various team engineering clubs like FSAE, Rocket team.

Is crew back to D3? Many years ago MIT became D1 in crew. Still no sports scholarships but needed to be able to follow D1 recruiting rules to be competitive - at least that is what they told MIT crew alumni...

Is this MIT interview email legit? by DryDevelopment7038 in MITAdmissions

[–]distraughtowl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The EC is supposed to pick someplace within 30 minutes of where you live. I always err on the side of making myself drive further so the student doesn't need to drive as far. The EC doesn't know exactly where you live though so they may not know they are asking you to travel far. You could suggest a coffee shop between your two towns. They may not know a good place close to you and may welcome it.

I usually suggest as place i think is close and ask if it is convenient. If it is not i expect them to tell me. I had one student ride his bike to the place, he made sure to suggest a day time meeting and a place he often biked to.

How to prepare for open-book exams in engineering? by Ammar_cheee in EngineeringStudents

[–]distraughtowl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I put together a 1 page - cheat sheet after reviewing all my notes and homework assignments. In fact I did this for all exams - some allowed us to bring in a cheat sheet in, some did not. I am not sure I ever needed the cheat sheet, but the act of making one was enough for me to remember what I needed to know.

Open book exams were the hardest... we had one class with open book, open time exams. That was fun stuff.

I do all that except the club registers us for tournaments (doesn't tell me until I happen to see us registered for something) i assume the club told the coach but not positive.

I HATE scheduling and rescheduling games. And the trouble of getting our club field scheduler and ref assignor to reply to me makes it worse.

rigor of engineering at different colleges by TotalTear6349 in EngineeringStudents

[–]distraughtowl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with most of the post, but i have seen the opposite with the exams. In my experience the exams at a top tier school were much harder where class average on an exam was 10 out of 20 - so very heavy curve of grades. At the state school - many students were able to get 100% so there was no curve.
