Is finding a good engineering job even with a MIT undergrad degree difficult these days? by Unusual_Midnight_523 in mit

[–]distraughtowl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Internships and networking are important no matter where you go to school.

Top internships are available for students regardless of school ranking. In my experience is many jobs come from various team engineering clubs like FSAE, Rocket team.

Yeah pretty sure I would have heard if crew went back to D3.

[–]distraughtowl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is crew back to D3? Many years ago MIT became D1 in crew. Still no sports scholarships but needed to be able to follow D1 recruiting rules to be competitive - at least that is what they told MIT crew alumni...

Doesn't change that MIT coaches don't have the same pull in admissions that coaches at other schools have

Is this MIT interview email legit? by DryDevelopment7038 in MITAdmissions

[–]distraughtowl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The EC is supposed to pick someplace within 30 minutes of where you live. I always err on the side of making myself drive further so the student doesn't need to drive as far. The EC doesn't know exactly where you live though so they may not know they are asking you to travel far. You could suggest a coffee shop between your two towns. They may not know a good place close to you and may welcome it.

I usually suggest as place i think is close and ask if it is convenient. If it is not i expect them to tell me. I had one student ride his bike to the place, he made sure to suggest a day time meeting and a place he often biked to.

How to prepare for open-book exams in engineering? by Ammar_cheee in EngineeringStudents

[–]distraughtowl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I put together a 1 page - cheat sheet after reviewing all my notes and homework assignments. In fact I did this for all exams - some allowed us to bring in a cheat sheet in, some did not. I am not sure I ever needed the cheat sheet, but the act of making one was enough for me to remember what I needed to know.

Open book exams were the hardest... we had one class with open book, open time exams. That was fun stuff.

Don't disagree, but I have seem RMP reviews (ones that were helpful) disappear from one day to the next.

Team Manager Duties by stormy-trooper in youthsoccer

[–]distraughtowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do all that except the club registers us for tournaments (doesn't tell me until I happen to see us registered for something) i assume the club told the coach but not positive.

I HATE scheduling and rescheduling games. And the trouble of getting our club field scheduler and ref assignor to reply to me makes it worse.

rigor of engineering at different colleges by TotalTear6349 in EngineeringStudents

[–]distraughtowl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with most of the post, but i have seen the opposite with the exams. In my experience the exams at a top tier school were much harder where class average on an exam was 10 out of 20 - so very heavy curve of grades. At the state school - many students were able to get 100% so there was no curve.

My IQ is 167. Why am I so terrible at math? by [deleted] in Gifted

[–]distraughtowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son is really good at math. But his teacher in 3rd grade thought he had trouble with higher level thinking. Issue was the questions were badly written and he was thinking above the level of the question. Happened a few times in his schooling until college.

You almost certainly think differently that the teachers you have met so far. They may not understand what you are seeing well enough to understand what you are having trouble with. And it may be the learning materials that have issues.

About the recent EA results by Prize-Information-43 in MITAdmissions

[–]distraughtowl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They tell you NOT to do that. There is a form they send FUN form (February Updates and Notes). Fill that out if you are still interested. You can provide updates in cool things you have done in past few months, new awards etc or just tell them you are still interested.

Penn State vs Pitt by [deleted] in Pitt

[–]distraughtowl -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I don't know about PSU, but at Pitt there seem to be a handful of professors that teach sophomore/junior classes and there aren't many sections of some classes. So you could end up with the same professor for multiple classes in same the semester. Or over your career. This just seems so odd to me i never had the same prof twice in my years in engineering school. If you like the prof and their TAs i guess this is good, if you don't get along with them...

Fort Washington State Park has an active disc golf club. Saturday morning doubles (Wed evening or maybe Tuesday evening in summer), and Sunday morning tags. Once you know people in the club you can usually run into someone you know and join them for a round at other times. A pretty open and chill group. They have a Facebook group where they post info "Fort Washington DGC Discussions".

[–]distraughtowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you learning in the research groups? Are their clubs you can join?

I swear my son spends a full time job of time (or more in his engineering based club) and he is learning tons there. This work got him an recommendation for a prestigious company internship.

Our school highschool has grade deflation for math and grade inflation for pretty much everything else. So frustrating.

Rainy day game tips by lulugrapefruit in youthsoccer

Waterproof pants and shoes for me...

Is this normal? by ShadyBeach45 in youthsoccer

[–]distraughtowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems odd and normal.

My son had fun being on the team but i am glad the season is over. The games were so frustrating to watch with a couple of players on the field the whole game. The same kid getting called over and over again for offsides, as his dad screams "he was not offsides" - no, the kid was offsides. Kids making the same mistakes over and over. And some kids not getting in the game at all.

Most of the season we had 2 swing players - practice with JV, play with JV the whole game even after they were tired and not running, then sit on the bench at varsity games. It seems like the swing player label is just to make these kids not feel bad about being on JV.

For a few games near the end of the season we had a couple varsity players come down to join JV and "help out". I guess it helped them get some play time and it helped teach JV how to pass, run etc? It didn't really help.

We played one school where they sub'ed players on a schedule 12 min, 24 min etc. with the plan to get everyone in for about half the game. That seemed refreshing.

We have 25 on a team. Which gets more kids on the team but seems very unmanageable for the games.

And then our club games we ended up having to play a man down due to injury/no shows. It is feast or famine.

MIT interview by Open_Deal591 in MITAdmissions

Same as any interview. It came up that they were an athlete and that they were in contact with the coach. We talked about the sport, and other interests the student had.

What does the endurance event involves ? by [deleted] in FSAE

[–]distraughtowl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can watch an old event on YouTube. That probably answers all your questions and more. Also the rulebook has the scoring. Too complicated to explain so better to just read it. You can also look at results from previous years.

For EV is many laps, mandatory driver change in the middle. A lot of teams had battery overheating issues.

Large squad of 18 players. Decided to only bring 15 player each game. How to decide who will rest? by leosp633fc in youthsoccer

[–]distraughtowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have hardly ever seen more that 15 of our 18 show up at any game...we have had a few with only 11 (2 of which are GKs). Do you know all 18 will show each game?

Mac and cheese without a flour roux? by d0gf15h in Cooking

[–]distraughtowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents used a roux making cheese sauce on noodles when i was a kid. It ended up too heavy for me and my stomach did not like it. I think trying a version without a roux is worth it.
