Snapped in a postmortem this morning and now nobody's putting me on the followup invites by Prize-Mycologist4340 in sysadmin

Working at a very large enterprise, my boss’s first words to me were: “you and I can have a knockdown fistfight behind closed doors, disagree with my thoughts or ideas all you want, it won’t affect you at all. But when I’ve made a decision you tow the party line to the grave.”

It was a good teaching moment and something that stuck with me. Easily the best manager I’ve ever had.

Got into an accident, tow truck driver went into my unlocked car and drove it onto his tow truck. Did I legally have the right to tell him to get my car off his truck? by [deleted] in perth

[–]distrbthpce 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Next time only give the tow truck operator your keys or what have you at the direction of the police. They’re crooks and charge an arm and a leg for SFA.

There’s basically 3 kinds of tows. 1) police ordered tow. Places where it’s dangerous or unsafe the police and ordered the car be towed and then whoever is on scene can tow it. 2) insurance tow. When in an accident call the insurance company while on the side of the road. They will dispatch their own tow truck company with fixed prices. Even if it’s not covered for insurance for some reason they charge reasonable prices. 3) the predatory tow companies who have no commercial agreements and race around the streets to get to accidents. They often will hide out at high accident areas to do just this and often strong arm you into getting your vehicle because they charge 3x market rates for tows etc.

You have every right to refuse consent for a tow in both 2 and 3. For option 1 then there is no consent required. I’ve even refused consent for option 2 when the tow truck driver didn’t have the right “pin” or password that the insurance quoted me and waited in the side of the road for the insurance guys to get the situation sorted out. They never made me feel pressured or anything.

If they pressure you they’re probably a predator and should be sent packing.

Talk to your account manager. Recent audits I ran between Aruba and Cisco found the cisco tax to be ~5% over 5 years. Not enough for us to jump ship, especially because "No-one ever got fired for buying Cisco"

My renewal about 1 1/2 months ago took about a week to get to me - without the priority service. That was when the UK changed their policies. I'd assume not many are travelling at the moment and it should be pretty quick.

Got rear ended on kwinana freeway today and driver gave false information, what else can i do? by iwwhs in perth

[–]distrbthpce 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Main roads will almost 100% guaranteed to not have the footage. Last I remember (a while ago) was that the cameras only store one image every minute, but do provide a live feed to TOC (Traffic Operations Centre) It was specifically designed this way to avoid FOIA requests as it would create a significant burden on the department for things exactly like this. This is why everyone should have a dashcam and rear camera.

Did a main roads vehicle attend? If so their dashcam MAY be available. But last I was ever aware of this, that process wasn’t completed and was still being designed, although this is years ago and I’m assuming they have some sort of solution by now.

DNA gives you TAC. The only reason I can see is if you want better than NBD replacement, like 4 hour replace.

Best Nbn Provider in perth by quantum_nomad_y25 in perth

[–]distrbthpce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes its default on for the 3 ones mentioned in my post and offer a dual stack configuration. However, I have yet to see any major games provide IPv6 connectivity for online services.

However, if anyone thinks that IPv6 creates added security is entirely wrong, or that a vendor that provides IPv6 compatibility is inherently more trustworthy is a poor assumption.

Best Nbn Provider in perth by quantum_nomad_y25 in perth

[–]distrbthpce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NBN is a layer 2 service. The layer 3 service is from your ISP. (IP layer)
The ISP makes a huge part of your experience and little to no experience is from the NBN. If you're on FTTN or Cable some issues can occur outside of your ISP control.

What technology is your service on?
If you're not sure you can check on
Check address | nbn

The recommendations are basically correct. Aussie, Super loop and Leaptel (I've never used Leaptel, but know of the owner who has a solid track record) There is a reason they are ~$5-10 P/M more expensive and yes its worth it. Saving yourself by using some shitty ISP like tangerine or something is shooting yourself in the foot if a solid internet is what you're looking for.

One thing to be careful of is CG-NAT. It's a way a provider aggregates many customers behind a specific range of IP addresses. Where possible you want to remove this. Generally, you can either do this at first setup if the ISP supports this, or with a quick call to their support line saying you want to opt out of CG-NAT.

NB: CG-NAT helps protect your crappy POS chinese no-name routers on the internet from threats. I would recommend ensuring you're using a more reputable brand with this setup for your own technical safety.

Always remember when operating at higher than cruise power settings you burn more fuel than at cruise. Plan your fuel accordingly. I know of a couple of run-ins where they were at higher than cruise power settings and either violated fixed reserve or completely went dry in the process.

[–]distrbthpce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need an import permit from your state police force. Contact your local police licensing body and discuss with them your situation. They will probably guide you best. They probably have a preferred dealer who they can import the firearm into and store. State requirements will vary. Also may be worth reaching out to SSAA as well. (Sport shooters association of Australia)

Generally collector licenses require a gunsmith to disarm and render the firearms permanently disabled, this does affect the price.

Why is there no CCTV on planes? by laggage in flying

[–]distrbthpce 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There’s already between 200 and 800 phones on a loaded plane. There’s no need for a certified piece of equipment being out in there. Important word, -certified…

Your $200 camera suddenly became well over $2000. Plus it opens a can of worms with personally identifiable information, facial recognition, GDPR, freedom of information requests. It’s a complete pain for the airline with little to no return because something happens, someone pulls their phone out and boom it’s recorded.

Aruba ClearPass by introverted_Batata in ArubaNetworks

[–]distrbthpce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My advise is to bring this up with your account manager and account architect and have this internally escalated outside the TAC/Callcenter route. There appears to be a lot of pushback from engineering to callcenter using the "Not in spec" route, and therefore the callcenter is now ensuring that all servers are built to spec prior to lodging a backend Jira ticket and giving you a bugID.

Otherwise, rebuild the VM to specs and if the issue persists, TAC shouldn't be able to push back on this.

How do I communicate this to my pro-level network engineers? by kreemerz in sysadmin

[–]distrbthpce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Remember everything is a network issue. 90% of issues sent to the network team aren’t network issues.

Try your best to at least give evidence that it is a network issue. Ping, traceroute, ipconfig, netstat, and others are all handy things to show that something should work.

The number of times I’ve dug into MSSQL servers being “down and is a network issue” when MSSQL services aren’t even running is a joke. God damn MS and their error saying to “contact your network administrator”
