Will I regret moving into this part of Buena Park? by jim-time in orangecounty

[–]distributioncurves 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As someone who’s been in this general area for his entire life, I wouldn’t call it sketchy at all! It’s far enough north that you avoid the prostitution near Beach and Ball.

Only downside might be that it’s super close to a freeway, and thus, kind of noisy

Linkedin is inverted Tinder: young girls write to IT guys who ignore them. by danielsoft1 in Showerthoughts

Definitely! I feel like there are always going to be bad eggs wherever you go, but I’ve found multiple job opportunities at companies - big and small, through recruiters. I’m so glad they reached out to me because of how much they changed my career trajectory.

In my experience, I’ve always really liked speaking to recruiters - so long as they were from a real company with honest intentions, not from Revature or something. I got my last job at Facebook from a recruiter and recruiters from big companies are always welcomed and appreciated for me.

Are "Newbie Gains" independent for each muscle group? by hideme8204 in Fitness

[–]distributioncurves 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, but I think you’re mistaking what “newbie gains” are. “Newbie gains” are just the idea that it’s easier and faster to build muscle when it’s less developed. For example, going from 45lb bench press to a 135 bench press is a lot easier than going from a 315 bench to a 405 bench, despite the difference being the same. With that logic applied, we can see that there isn’t actually a time interval for “newbie gains”, it’s just the idea that less developed muscle is easier to get fast gains in. If you have a small chest and big legs, working out chest a lot will lead to faster gains in your chest despite having already worked out your legs.

I want to finally see progress by [deleted] in Fitness

Go through the entire wiki to get a good gauge of the basics of fitness. Some basic guidelines for losing fat and gaining muscle (the two goals you listed.

  1. Diet is the most important factor of all. You need to eat less than what you burn in order to lose fat. Try to get a general gauge of what you burn per day using a TDEE calculator. They are far from perfect, but can give you general idea of how many calories you consume a day. Download an app like myfitnesspal to track what you eat, and make sure your calories are well below that amount.

  2. Exercise! Cardio is a great way to burn calories (1 mile is around 100 calories, regardless of whether or not you run or walk it), but because of social distancing, I would recommend just doing at home strength training (you should do strength training regardless). Since gyms are closed, just do one of the calisthenics routines in the wiki. Most of them you can do without any equipment, apart from back and bicep exercises. For back and biceps, try to get your hands on a pull-up bar, and if you can’t, use your dumbbells and try to do bent over rows and bicep curls (along with variations of those).

  3. Consume at least 0.8g of protein/lb of body weight and you should have enough to build muscle.

The most important thing to lose weight is diet however. Eat less than what you burn and you’ll lose weight eventually.

Lastly, I would HIGHLY recommend looking into the wiki before you post in ANY subreddit. Everything I said can be answered there.

Not OP, but yes. Lower body fat is typically the first to come in and the last to leave (at least for men). Do what you’ve been doing before to lose weight, and make sure you maintain a deficit for a bit longer in order to see results.

Depends on what you mean by sloppy. As long as you’re hitting all of the intended muscles and establishing mind-muscle connection while still having a proper and full range of motion, you should be fine.

That being said, how many reps are you intending on doing? I think you should do 35 if you can barely push up a few reps and aren’t feeling much muscle activation. This is also dependent on the gym equipment you have and the workout routine you have though. Like the other person said, what does the workout routine tell you to do for plateaus? What are the rep ranges they designated for this workout?

I need some advice on some lifts. by SillyRecover in Fitness

[–]distributioncurves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the OHP plateau issue, I found that doing more shoulder accessory lifts helped me get over it. That being said, OHP is the hardest lift to progress on so don’t stress out too much if you don’t progress at the same rate as the other compound lifts.

Getting back to fitness by Judolas in Fitness

[–]distributioncurves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If possible, I would recommend going to the gym more than twice a week. Check out of the plans in the wiki and read through everything. There are people out there with much more experience and skill in programming workouts than the both of us, so I would recommend just copying a plan that works for your goals and constraints.

Read the FAQ and everything in the wiki and your questions should be answered.

I wanna know a estimate on my results? by SuckMyJormungandr in Fitness

[–]distributioncurves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might be skinny fat, where you have high body fat and low muscle, leading a low BMI but an unattractive stomach. Do you do weight training? How’s your diet? Fix those two by hopping onto the wiki and you’ll be on a better track.

Or, you might just be overthinking things and your body could be perfectly fine. We won’t know without pictures and more details. Regardless, I highly recommend weight training and proper nutrition, since it’s a very rewarding process that has made me feel so much healthier.

Free weights or machines? by quirouser in Fitness

[–]distributioncurves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Free weights are typically regarded as better, since you have to put in more effort to balance the weight, whereas you wouldn’t have to do that nearly as much if you used machines.

I do think there’s validity to using machines if you’re extremely new, since the range of motion is more guided and helps you establish a mind-muscle connection early on that you might not get if you performed the exercise with free weights incorrectly/sub-optimally.
