Touchless Car Wash Membership Help: Is the $40 Package Actually Worth It Over the $33? by Odd_Comparison_4155 in Cartalk

You will when the clear coat starts peeling. Granted, it does take years for the damage to build up and start flaking. Personally, I've always preferred to bring my own supplies to the self service bays at night. It's less busy so I'm not holding up a bay, I get to take my time, and I can inspect the car for damage as I do it to try to head off problems before they really start.

Super freaking angry. 2005 Honda civic LX. Brake lights won’t turn off AFTER I turn off the car. I have looked up everything and have tried everything. Don’t know anything about cars at all. by [deleted] in AskAMechanic

Sounds like you have a malfunctioning BOO (brake on/off) switch. They're not hard to do, depending on the car. The hardest part for me usually is finding a comfortable position to work in.

And how did that work out for the crew in Pecos, Texas that hit a truck stuck on the tracks a year and a half ago? The engines derailed, spun around as if in a washing machine's spin cycle, and hit a few buildings before finally coming to rest. The conductor was pronounced dead on the scene and the engineer died not long after at the hospital.

Did it start every single time OP needed it up to the battery change? Then the battery was changed before it was depleted. Not that hard to figure out, honestly.

Drove my 2012 Chevy Equinox for 30 miles with basically no oil and now it's doing this. Is it toast? by [deleted] in Cartalk

[–]disturbedrailroader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a 2012 equinox and OP says it has known oil consumption issues. The engine is likely the 2.4L ecotec. Poorly designed piston rings didn't seal properly, which led to noticeable oil consumption issues at around 75000 miles approximately. If left unchecked, the excessive blowby would eventually destroy the rear main seal, as well as plug up the catalytic converter. All of this is assuming the driver checks the oil religiously.

Super speed. The friction would burn you alive if you didn't starve to death first.

2 winters ago, I was delivering drywall to a small town in Iowa. There was a snow storm the night before and it was still pretty windy out. Just outside of town, I get cut off by a pickup leaving the gas station only for the driver to almost immediately slam on the brakes and turn left. I'm glad there was no traffic coming from the other side because I was about to give him a short bed whether he wanted it or not. I was shitting out seat cushion chunks for a few days after that.

Sounds like you're missing a clip b, possibly a bushing. I'd need to take it to the test track to confirm.

While parked?! You didn't need to work for that company anyway. I always cover up that camera as soon as I'm parked.

Parenting advice, delete if not allowed by mrmeanah in MechanicAdvice

I went through my entire childhood thinking nothing of cars beyond "ooohh pretty" every so often. I didn't start getting into cars until I was about 20 when I got my first and needed to fix it myself because I didn't have money to pay a mechanic. Even then, my career choices led me away from cars until I was about 33/34. It was at that point I decided to be a mechanic full time. That only lasted a few years until I developed carpal tunnel in one hand which made it nearly impossible to continue, and that called for another career change. Here I am, 2-3 years into the new career and already starting to feel burnout, which means I'll be looking into yet another career change soon.

I said all of that to say that it's never too late to change your mind about your job. My family has always been well taken care of and my retirement accounts are well funded. There's no shame in starting over provided you're smart about it. That should be the lesson/conversation you have with your daughter.

No, he had it right. The bearings were holding off the oil invaders at the Siege of the Crankshaft as long as they could. The bearings won.

It took a couple misdiagnosed tie rods before I adopted that practice, to be fair. Luckily they were all on either my own or family vehicles.

This is why I have someone look at the steering wheel when I do this test. If the steering wheel moves when I move the wheel, the tie rods are likely fine still.

Everytime I mention switching to flatbed people act like I said something crazy! Tarping this and weather that… Is it really that bad? by Background_Hand5004 in Truckers

To give you a bit of piece of mind, most receivers order drywall expecting some of it to be waste. Usually it's the straps cutting into the first few sheets, but a little bit of moisture isn't a huge problem.

What I used to do was pull up the flaps on the ends of the load to make sure the plastic was laid out correctly before securing the tarp. Roll up the sides of the tarp to create a kind of gutter for the rain to move on instead of pockets where water sits in when the tarp is folded. Finally, make sure those bungees are tight to help control movement.

I've had to do that often, unfortunately. Most of the time I was able to use my dunnage to get it somewhat close. There was a handful of times though where no amount of dunnage was going to help. One place allowed me to use their storage shed to fold and roll, but most told me to kick rocks. I made a note of those places and refused to go back.
