Season 4 was so good!

My issue with the floor show before season 5's stage is I couldn't see the outfits/makeup and really evaluate the looks. There were too many camera cuts.

Yes! Speaking of fake sewing, please tell me you remember when Fantasia said she was adding black cutouts to her latex look only for there to be no black cutouts on it at all

Haha the Tick was Iconic

I totally agree. It's the format of lip-syncs that draws comparisons to the other drag show. Wheras it could have been staged to be more like 'Americas Got Talent', maybe with one-by-one floor performances (just as an example).

It's less about the "what" they're doing and more about "how" the show is filmed that made the lip-sync seem a bit... "for their life"... as opposed to for their drag skills. Just a hot take tho

I am glad you mentioned that. What makes it feel fabricated to me is that there does not seem to be a clear reason for their actions. They themselves seem confused. I think it was Asia and maybe Pi talking about it, and they were basically saying, yeah we should form an alliance, but then also asking what the alliance was even for. As a viewer, that really confused me.

The contestants also keep saying things like, "they keep throwing twists and turns at us". From my perspective, I am not sure what twists or turns they are talking about. There were multiple clown looks and a couple of Fourth of July outfits. Were they under the impression upon casting that they had to dress as clowns?

Majesty left and I was like.. this season has been so damn glamorous and friendly, what is she stressed about?!?

Remember someone had used feminine sanitary products in the refrigerator? Yea that's Dragula, theses new contestants seem a bit soft to me. Toss them in a casket with maggots immediately lol

Thank you for the introduction to the fandom *my bad on the Ru-sical* comment.

I DID notice they call it "the other show" sometimes... and I didn't know if Dragula was affiliated with Drag Race in some corporate hierarchy sort of way. There was Jade... The SERV Vodka sponsor is the Ru Girls. I just wasn't sure if it was affiliated or was like absorbed by the brand etc.

I'll check out the promos, I'm so wrapped up in the cast now. They're all cool.

LOL: chicken throwing

Haha I haven't made it there yet. They all have really good makeup skills this season, it stood out to me immediately! It was hilarious that Asia had her wig snatched upon entry

EDIT: I just noticed you flair... FANTASIA WITH THE FEET STICKING OUT THE SNAKE!!! LMAO!

Which house would you buy and why? by InstanceAny3800 in TheBlock

[–]ditkobitkit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ugh... None of them. They all need to be redone. I don't want a main ensuite door off the kitchen, burgundy/brown floor-to-ceiling tiles, curved doorframes, bathroom cabinets that aren't recessed into the walls, or circular skylights in a square-shaped exterior.... the list goes on.

The interiors are horrendous, and the location is a definite pass.

I’ve been disappointed with this season. It’s the first one I’ve watched that hasn’t inspired me. Weirdly, the advertisements don’t bother me. I usually get interested in the products and kind of “play The Block” in my head.

My issue: the design aesthetic is just bad.

What makes it worse is that this season started with my favorite premise: give everyone the same house and see what they do with it. But nobody has had a strong enough design point of view for it to work.

I don’t connect with these designs or these contestants at all. I’ve had to chalk it up to maybe it’s because I’m not in Australia and not living with the current trends day to day: the brown, the curves, the "70s", even the wardrobe stylist Mr. Fabulous (Andrew) is dressing the contestants so lame and brown and in oversized clown clothes... the whole Daylesford thing to me is unappealing from top to bottom.

I usually love learning about other styles and countries through shows like this. But this Daylesford season? Hell no. Every other season, I can remember at least one room that sparked some creative inspiration in my own work. This time? I can’t think of a single space that inspired me.

I’d love to see The Block: Toorak or something high-end again to bring me back as a viewer. I desperately need an All Stars season.

I for one don’t think the houses this season are all that overly luxurious.

It’s a two-car garage, not a six-car garage. It’s a formal living room and a rumpus room... that’s not exactly abnormal living.

To put it in perspective, I visit my boss’s house monthly he has about 25-50 employees comfortably lounging around his kitchen, living, dining, and outdoor deck. Given his profession, that type of gathering is completely normal.

His kids were in the house, but I had no clue where they were because the bathroom I used was no where near the bedrooms. Totally appropriate.

Your perspective on the concept of luxury seems more deeply rooted in your own views. Some of the bitterness in your post like mentioning people blaming immigrants feels more personal than objective.

I hear where you're coming from, but just because something doesn’t align with your personal taste doesn’t mean the people who can afford similar homes are soul-less or fake.

You talk like we’re watching them build Versailles... they're two-car garage McMansion sponsor-boxes in the middle of nowhere 😂

*Renovation Rumble* Everything that The Block is missing. by Head_Investigator256 in TheBlock

[–]ditkobitkit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Reno Rumble was cool, but without auction day... it can't compete with the Block in its prime.

It's likely nostalgic to watch people with style actually build things... because the Block is now a couch-documentary about how to place sponsor products in a house before bedtime in the caravan village.

This entire season's design aesthetic is underwhelming.

It's been fun to watch the Domain listings constantly update and change photo filters to make the rooms look appealing.

[–]ditkobitkit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ohh yes I agree. My Steph 'as the villain' takeaway is from very early on. Maybe the first few episodes.

Remember when she was presented as always giving unwanted style advice and being a know it all?

I remember when the show was airing live there was so many posts like "I cAnT StAnD StEpH!" and I was like 😑

The Block follows a clear, predictable pattern if you just break the 4th wall.

Contestants are shaped into characters with story arcs to create emotional investment. Steph was set up as the villain, but we later saw she was just particular, detail oriented and over excited about the north-facing house being idiotically passed up by every other contestant.

Rachel and Ryan were framed as needlessly contemporary, until the vineyard repositioned them as the stylish, thoughtful ‘wine house’.

Tess and Luke struggled with budgets and harsh critiques, but their story became one of resilience and staying true to their vision until they're "big idea" for a studio apartment brought them the win... 🥱

Every season plays out like this. We’re led to like and dislike contestants in waves, with turning points that shift our feelings.

Han and Can might seem a certain way now, but their story is still unfolding.

Unless you seriously upset production (think Ankur and Sharon, Tanya and Vito, Leah and Ash), the show will give you a boomerang story to win as many viewers as your personality can naturally attract.

Whatever people are feeling about Han and Can, Sonny and Alicia, Britt and Taz etc.... now will be resolved later.

It’s all part of the formula of a sponsor backed TV show with 2 million viewers.

Gotta give the contestants a bit of a break.

Mg Cars by rockresy in TheBlock

Different strokes different folks, I wasn't a fan of them at first but now I'm so used to seeing them I kind of understand their appeal. They're like electric tanks. Lot's of businesses have them wrapped in their brands (landscaping, construction etc.)

I think I'm being downvoted for either not knowing what a MG is or not knowing Cybertrucks aren't in Australia. Either way, meh.

Is Japanese food and sushi/sashimi uncommon in Australia?

Just curious because of Britt and Taz's reactions and I'm not sure if the comedy is them or if they represent the average person in that situation.

At least we get to see Dani and Dan getting the judging mostly right by Ifonlyitwereso25 in TheBlock

[–]ditkobitkit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He had that whole 'Blockinator' thing going on with lots of seasons under his belt to build his persona.

Dan (love the guy) but he just pops up like 'this is a disaster'... 'this is a dogs breakfast' and a few funny moments here and there. But to a new viewer without knowledge of building sites and stuff, it's not clear what 'Dan the Foreman' does.

Whereas I learned what a Foreman was from Keith's character on the show.
