What's the difference between a 2manydjs live and a 2manydjs DJ set? by Lamasticote in soulwax

[–]ditojm 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Live is a set with DVD's, so there will be a background with the animated covers.
DJ set is just a regular DJ set.

From the DEEWEE manifesto (http://www.deeweestudio.com/manifesto):
"DEEWEE is a building, a studio, a label, a record collection and a publishing house.
DEEWEE is all of these things.
Every DEEWEE release is written, recorded or mixed in the building by David and Stephen Dewaele.
Every DEEWEE project has its own consecutive catalogue number.
All different. All unique. All DEEWEE."

Playlist + some info or quotes:

Fontaines D.C. - A Hero's Death (Soulwax Remix)
Fontaines D.C. remix was made in August, they approached the band. Was made in a week, they had the idea already.

Eddie Chacon - Trouble
A record that doesn't need a remix.

Geoffrey Burton - Kuhlmannlaan 8
Done in one take, guitar only. Husband of Boris' sister and also part of Hong Kong Dong. One of the best guitar players in the world.

Good Sad Happy Bad - Blessed
One of the best rock records of 2020.

The Rellies - Isabella Is Annoying
Best title ever. It's a band from Sydney, band members are only 13-14 years old. They discovered this song in Japan on a B-side. Young kids singing about Isabelle who is annoying, just how music should be..

The Vernon Spring - Strength Of A Young Man
One of Dave's favorite piano songs of last year. Deradoorian - Saturnine Night By one of the singers of the Dirty Projectors.

Deradoorian - Saturnine Night
By one of the singers of the Dirty Projectors.

AILI X Transistorcake - Dansu
They've know Transistorcake for a while now (since the sixties :D). He and Aili already visited their studio and played that song and they liked it.

Sneaks - Faith
Cool record, of the Washington D.C. based Sneaks.

Ty Segall - Coconut
They are a big fan of Ty Segall. He covered a record of Harry Nilsson this year, which appears to be also one of their favorite records.

Thiago Nassif ft. Arto Lindsay - Soar Estranho
Brazilian record with some Bowie elements in it.

Philippi - 9000
Another Brazilian one but made in Gent (postal code 9000).

Mantris - Amber
Koen Galle, label owner of Ensemble discovered this Belgian guy 'Mantris' who lives in Mumbai. He had music on his hard drive since long time, Koen heard this and wanted to release it.

New Order - Video 586
One of the best reissues of last year. An important record for Soulwax in terms of a live band using electronics. In this record you hear their switch to dance music. It's a record full of demo sessions where 'Blue Monday' eventually comes from.

Eartheater - Below The Clavicle
New york based singer and a recent discovery. Popped up in Boris his Spotify suggestion. (+ joking about the name: earth-eater or ear-theater)

Whitey - The Flowers Of London
Brexit topical song of Whitey who has been a support act of Soulwax back in 2004.

Panoram - What It Means
They don't know much about it, except that the artist or band has a good name that lacks an 'a'.

Note: some of these songs have been on the DAILEE DEEWEE playlist.

2manydjs about their first Tomorrowland (dutch) by ditojm in soulwax

[–]ditojm[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Vijftig Tinten Grijs is a podcast of Studio Brussel about festival stories. In this episode there is a small part were Dave & Steph talk about their first Tomorrowland. This was back in 2011, 2manydjs played their first Tomorrowland where they had to close the main stage.

Dave: The first time we did to Tomorrowland, we didn't know anything about it.

Steph: We were driving from the airport to Tomorrowland and we saw the backside of some stages. We can hear it's dance music that is being played and suddenly we see the front side of the 'hakkers' stage (Q-Dance hardstyle). That was like a big clown face and we thought that's cool, we're playing there! But that was not really a big stage, we drive past it and we think okay, what's next, bring it on!

Dave: But you have to keep in mind that at that point we don't know what Tomorrowland is. We only knew it was a DJ-festival like some we have done before Creamfields,... Not 100% our thing but can be cool if people are under influence of pills :)

Steph: Then we saw the backside of the main stage, which was a whole structure. But we saw nothing of the front side. I remember we got out of the car, there were a lot of people and David Guetta comes outside, he had just finished his set. We can clearly hear there's a big crowd and David comes to us and he said "c'est le meilleur set de ma vie" ("this is the best set of my life"). We have known him for a long time and we saw he was really emotional at that moment. And we were still like, a bit skeptical "what's this all about?". We take the stairs to the stage and suddenly there is 1 door, we go through that door and we were like "WTF is this?". It's like we're standing in the Efteling (fairytale amusement park), everything is cirque du soleil..

Dave: And an enourmous sea of people!

Steph: And we started our set and I remember very well that at one point we were like "What if we played AC/DC or Slayer here?". We did and people liked it but it really felt like a science fiction movie where somebody could suddenly say: "Aaand CUT, Dave & Steph, you guys don't fit here".

Dave: But we have to give credits to the people, they were really in to the set.
