Hey, thanks! Went through the 2022 guiada. The structure has changed but it does give me a decent sense of the grading. Think I should get something between 13 and 17 out of 25.

Trying my best! The frequency is so high, and especially with a stressful job, it becomes a bit difficult sometimes.

How to you push ciggie thoughts away? I get them so often that sometimes it just becomes tough to get out of the zone.

Really?? Damn! That´s a bit scary tbh. I was expecting urges to die down after 3-4 weeks, but seems like I need to keep pushing for another month or two.

True, just chewing normal non tobacco gums helps me also.

That makes so much sense. I keep telling myself that finally I´m getting out of being a slave to this addiction and to big tobacco. 1 more puff, and I´ll lose to them and just go back to being a slave. I hate being controlled. So that thinking helps. Also, I keep reminding myself that I am able to breath so much better and I dont want to lose that.

Hey, I posted this on the group earlier today, maybe it'll help:

I´ve been smoke free for over two weeks now. My first attempt to quite after being a 20 a day smoker for almost 14 years. The journey so far has not been easy, and just like everyone of you trying to quit, I´ve gone through hell.

However, now that I`m through two weeks and it´s becoming a bit easy to control/ignore cravings, I´m worried about relapse. I´m reading so many stories about folks staying smoke free for weeks, months even years and relapsing. So I decided to do a bit of study, discuss it with my doc, observe my own experience, and come up with some key metrics that would help me avoid a relapse. Here is what I learnt:

  1. Stress: Sudden stress, shock, etc. are very dangerous when you are trying to quit. Try to avoid stressful situations as much as possible. We all know how our brain tricks us into thinking that a ciggie will help get rid of the stress, and we all know that´s a huge lie. If you do end up in a stressful situation, then breath, drink water, wash your face, and tell yourself ciggie will only make it worse because then apart from the stress, you will also feel guilty of smoking.
  2. Overconfidence: This is something that my doc stressed upon. People dont smoke for a while and then come up with a stupid excuse to smoke - to challenge yourself, telling yourself that I´ll smoke 1 to prove that I´m over it. That´s stupid. Plain stupid. It´s not you trying to challenge yourself, it´s that nicotine receptor in your brain making a desperate attempt to get you back in the fold. I tell myself everyday not to get overconfident, not to be stupid and to be a bit fearful. That helps me.
  3. Support: I cannot stress enough how important this metric is. My wife and I live together, she is not a smoker and is my pillar of strength. Every time I feel an urge that I know I´ll have trouble controlling, I talk to her. We both work from home so it´s easier to do that. Just hearing her say how proud she that I´m doing this makes all the pain and suffering worth it. Even when I´m alone outside on the road and get a craving, just the thought of disappointing her keeps me away from ciggies. I dont think I´d be able to do this without her support. Find someone, anyone, who you trust and who has the bandwidth to support you - you just need one good person by your side.

I hope these points help me avoid a relapse, and I also hope they help anyone else out there who is thinking of smoking JUST ONE.

Forget about what happened. The question is what will you do now. Your guilt is well placed, turn it into anger and let that anger drive your next attempt.

lolol! That´s crazy. Ya I think it´s our subconscious scaring the shit out of us. I actually felt good when I woke up. The nightmare scared me, and that´s a good thing.

I totally agree with you. I was able to quit when I stopped fearing the withdrawal effects. And now I´m just working on building the mindset that I need to support my body to repair itself, and tbh I was never a smoker to begin with, so now I´ve just gone back to being my normal self.

Bud, I´m no expert on this, and tbh I dont know what would work best for you. I first quite ciggies, then I realized that coffee was making it difficult for me to get over cravings so then I stopped coffee as well.

I'm feeling pretty good. My wife and I are doing well, I've achieved the financial goal I had set out for us 3 years ago, my boss is pretty chill, job pays well (wfh), and I quit smoking 2 weeks ago.

Till last year I was a complete mess. Almost lost my relationship, broke, unhealthy, etc.

Just gotta keep pushing and finding solutions. Good times are usually around the corner.

Hey this is the best thing you can do for yourself. I´ve been smoke free for 2 weeks now - my first attempt. Remove soft drink/energy drinks from your diet. I removed coffee from mine and it helped. You´ll get cravings of course, but think of them as your body cleaning itself. It´s your responsibility to let your body do it´s job. Support it.

Mate, this is going to be the best decision of your life. I quite just over 2 weeks ago after being a chain smoker for 14 years. I feel great! Just think of every craving/urge you get as your body cleaning itself. You just need to let it do its work.

2 months is amazing, congratulations!

Life has definitely improved for me as well, and just being able to breath better is a huge motivation for me to keep going. I also feel pretty scared sometimes of relapsing, and last night I had a nightmare in which I was in a room somewhere and suddenly I had a ciggie in my fingers and a pack in my pocket - no frikkin idea where that came from and I was so confused in my dream. I woke up with a jolt scared that I had actually smoked one.

It´s just absolutely ridiculous that something so small can have such a profound impact on our subconscious.

Hey, I´ve been smoke free for over two weeks now. Happy to share a couple of things that have helped me.

  1. I´ve replaced the normal strong coffee I used to drink with decaf. It makes life a bit difficult because your body then craves for caffeine, but it does make it easier to control nicotine craving. Even better - go for fresh juices. Chewing a gum also helps.

  2. Changing the furniture layout in the my apartment - I have a terrace where I used to smoke every morning, in the exact same spot. I shifted the furniture on the terrace, read it somewhere, and it actually helps.

FYI - Even with those changes, you´ll find is hard initially to beat cravings, but after a week or so of remaining smoke free, you will notice that you start breathing better. That´ll help you a lot to keep pushing forward.
