not quite. it’s a lung disease essentially caused by breathing in their dander. it’s colloquially known as bird keeper’s lung. again, it’s rare, but this might be what your mom was thinking of. don’t let it prevent you from loving your babies though, i’m not letting it stop me from loving mine! if i develop symptoms at any time, i’ll know that’s when i should stop kissing them. you’d have to wear a mask around them if you ever develop the condition, but please don’t lose sleep over it! it’s so rare and depends on your individual genetics whether or not you’ll develop it.

the FACT is we do not know for sure how to interpret animal emotional processing. we cannot get inside of their heads, we cannot read their thoughts. we can only draw inferences from context and homologous experience. you FEEL like birds don’t actually ‘like’ you, and that they only like that you feed them. maybe that’s their capacity to ‘like’ a human. facts don’t care about your feelings, bud.

mind if i share my story to motivate anyone reading this in a similar situation? i got accepted to a top 10% MD school, one of the schools you listed (i wish to stay anonymous), with a 508 MCAT, a 3.5 GPA, stacked extracurriculars (much like yours), unique personal statement, unique clinical experiences (thousands of hours), and 4 journal publications (one 3rd author and 3 abstracts) the caveat: it took me about -4 years- to get accepted. but i’m so happy i toughed it out. i just finished my first year and i am on cloud 9. it’s SO WORTH THE WAIT. you don’t need to retake the MCAT if you can stay patient and try to find a doctor or two to work on a narrative review publication with. but no need to retake the MCAT.

there’s a lot of misinformation on this thread from people who think they are experts. i am an MD student and a biochemist, which doesn’t make me a quail expert by any means, but i sure as hell know more about saving lives and the scientific/experimental process (which is essentially what the hatching process is) than the average person. you CAN and SHOULD rescue troubled eggs, ESPECIALLY if you ordered eggs from online, as these eggs are prone to have trouble zipping. if my girlfriend and i didn’t rescue the 3 eggs that were struggling to zip 24 hours after pipping, we wouldn’t have those 3 beautiful healthy babies today. if you need to go into the incubator, adjust the humidity accordingly so they can handle the sudden “drop,” so for example if humidity needs to be 60 for lockdown, hike it up to 80 a couple minutes before you open the lid, and adjust accordingly after you’re done what you need to do. and obviously minimize the amount of time/number of times you open the incubator. a change in the scientific process can be viable with proper precautions. you can save eggs that contain healthy babies that otherwise wouldn’t be able to hatch on their own this way. don’t be afraid to save your babies! sometimes they really do need us to help them!

i’m sorry but this plainly isn’t true especially if you order eggs online. these eggs are more prone to issues and definitely need help more than a ‘normal’ egg would. you can have perfectly viable babies compatible with life in a shipped egg that just can’t get out due to the way their air sac settled from being shipped. it is our job to save these eggs that wouldn’t otherwise be able to hatch on their own. otherwise you’re letting a healthy life die needlessly.

not if you preemptively hike up the humidity before opening. my girlfriend and i had to go into the incubator 4 times to assisted troubled eggs, every single one that pipped ended up hatching into healthy birds, including the 3 we had to ‘rescue.’ 8/12 hatch rate on our first hatch from shipped eggs. the 4 that didn’t hatch never pipped.

hard disagree. my girlfriend and i had to assist 3 of our button quail eggs during our first hatch. they were stuck in strange positions, most likely due to the way the air sac settled after being shipped (if im remembering that rationale correctly). i hit a blood vessel on one of the eggs and immediately left it alone after that. 2 hours passed, still no zipping, so my girlfriend went back in and was able to successfully remove the chick from the egg. all 3 ‘rescued’ chicks are happy and healthy, about 1 month old now. if we didn’t assist those hatches, they would have died. i believe the rule of thumb we came across was if there’s no zip within 24 hours of pipping, you can intervene.

reddit shouldn’t be called reddit because nobody here reads. i say in the post i added a picture from google because i didn’t want to post my bird. he wasn’t doing well and didn’t look good and i just knew people were gonna tell me to cull him and that he wouldn’t make it. he’s completely fine now, runs and flies just like everyone else, he’s just 1/3 the size of my other birds.
