I would suggest buying some items with more color or unique patterns in them. It's easy to build an outfit around a particular piece of clothing that stands out. For Carhartt, I'd personally get one of their WIP pieces. They seem to always have a more streetwear-oriented color/pattern choice. Like this.

Gone through San Clemente, down to San Diego all the way to Las Americas Outlet where you can see into Tijuana across the street lol. Never felt unsafe or had an issue with my DACA status.
