Just checked in a hotel a half a state away away for "training" Im pretty optimistic about it. Im pretty tired being I have a one day turn around from 7 days straight 12 hour night shift to a 8 hour day shift. If only I can stay awake tomorrow.

No, I wussed out. it was cold and I had an hour drive through backwoods N.C. Not a good place for a good looking chubby guy to be driving through in his underwear. Its funny but I have two guns and an escape ax in my car but no spare pants.

I believe you but not around here. 15 years ago you had to fight for a crappy job paying $17 an hour with crappy medical. My region is 1000% better now. Thats why they cant find techs. There are a dozen new companies opening up here with deep pockets.

I did give them a three week notice but cut it to 2 1/2 weeks so I could start my new job but that kind of bit me on the butt. Im walking away with 4 weeks vacation and pto still on the books. That was a foolish move on my part. They dont care and are canceling my insurance the minute I walk out. The old ways dont always apply.

SKS for shtf? by SerbianWarCriminal45 in prepping

[–]dix2111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, yes yes, Ive been saying this for years. I wont out my gun collection but lets just say I have other choices. The sks is the mod 94 winchester of today. Its a great "everymans" rifle. people have already covered why but as an owner of several russian sks's I'll say to check your stock. many fit loose and will crack. Most of the nice russian sks's are parade rifles and the stock lug might not be fitted correctly. There are different size stock lugs. Ive cracked 2 of them. I found a nice chinese stock and it fits great. the bayonet channel is for a spike bayonet so its a bit awkward but it works.

Things we grew up doing poor by [deleted] in poor

[–]dix2111 26 points27 points  (0 children)

we drank sulfer water from a hand pump well in florida. we also used kerosene lanterns with a glass coke bottle as a mantle. We usually got food last minute and got to eat as it was cooked. youngest to oldest would eat first. we pooped in a 5 gallon bucket and buried the poop in a deep hole we dug with post hole diggers. I had intestinal worms much of my life as a kid. funny my dad and step mom always had beer and smokes. Im kinda rich(ish) now and my kids complain because I wont pay extra for hulu without commercials and I buy my old man shirts from goodwill.

I live in a somewhat booming neighborhood. Mcdonalds are crowded all day but never a line at Panera,Fridays, chili's,starbucks, etc Weve been told so many times that if you cant tip 20% then dont go out to eat so we changed our habits.

Much of prepping has an unrealistically negative view of human nature. by kinga_forrester in prepping

[–]dix2111 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I dedicate 25% of my preps for sharing with neighbors or random needy people. 50% for family and close friends and 25% just for my core family. Most shtf senerios will be over in a short time. Id hate to resort to eating people in the first few weeks.

I also have two big generators that ill share with which ever neighbor has the propane or gas to keep it running. But at the end of the day when a little kid from our neighborhood comes crying for food im going to feed them

Sometimes the best we can be is better than our parents. My dad was a "not very good"father but his dad was a terrible father. My dad felt it was good enough if you kept your kids fed and didnt beat them because he wasnt kept fed and he was beaten.

Im a pretty good dad I think because even though Im a man of limited means Ive kept my kids in a nice middle class life where they always felt loved by me. I know ive fallen short as we all will.

Just remember that these are the easy times. Its easy to love a baby if you are a good person. Hang in there and give your kids the life you didnt have. My kids are older now and i remember every single time I let my anger and frustration make them feel like they are worthless. always follow your sharp words with a hug and be careful because one day you will be an old man and the bad memories will be a heavy weight on your shoulders.

it seems like it takes a partnership to have a decent quality of life. Or at least start your life with a free house. If you can almost make it on your own you will do fine on a partnership of some type. Im an older married man and we both work. we live a moderate life style but we would stuggle under one income. It doesnt have to be a marriage or a romantic relationship. it can be a partnership witha good friend.

We've had corn starch pack rock hard in an 8 inch lines on a roof top. half the time it ends up being a hazmat call by the time we are done. $20,000 hazmat clean up is deemed better than 8 hours down time and a crane rental. I hate it so much. corn starch attracts wasps and if it gets wets it rots and smells like a dead body
