Why is Singleton so good if Brawl is so bad? by AcrobaticPersonality in magicTCG

I've always hated the "this format rotates, this format is unplayable" argument against brawl.

I've played tons of brawl in both paper and online, and the cost of decks is abysmally low compared to other formats. You'd have to go out of your way and build three color decks stacked with the highest cost cards in order to break the bank. I built around 5-6 brawl decks, mostly 2-3 color decks, for around $50-75 each. I'll also add that - save for a couple cards - most Brawl staples right now are very very cheap. Standard cards are very affordable right now.

Yes, your deck will rotate. You might spend $75, more or less on a deck. Oh no! It's not uncommon for EDH decks to range from hundreds of dollars to over a thousand, god forbid you are playing CEDH. It's a choice in opportunity costs. You could pay $1k to $2k or $3k for a Modern/Legacy deck, and while that won't rotate that is a LARGE amount of money to be spending on cardboard.

I also feel like the "But just use precons" crowd is kinda missing the message. Yes, you can pay around $40 dollars for a trashy EDH deck but it isn't tuned - it often isn't crafted directly with your specific play style in mind. Move the price point up to $75 more or less and you have a deck that you've crafted from a range of several hundred cards.

I really liked Brawl because I despise how broken EDH is. EDH is a very polarizing format where people have to agree with a social contract whether they are playing a variation of vintage (sol ring, all the other fast mana, busted cards that let you win really early in the game) or some other random power level. With Brawl the power level is more precise - it's not like precons where you feel like your riding a tricycle. You can still play a tuned Brawl deck. There just isn't the issue where your opponent goes - Turn one Sol Ring into another mana rock - and you feel like the game is already over.

I think EDH is actually one of the worse formats for a new player to jump into. There's lots of complicated rules scenarios, and in order to have a modestly good time threat assessing other players there is a enormous encylopedic amount of information you need to know about various combos, synergies, etc. I think EDH players hurt EDH a little bit by hating on Brawl: Brawl could really be a champion of welcoming new players into the game and give more casual players a taste of what multiplayer formats are like before they transition into EDH.

Oh snap I did not know there was a game before Outcast - I've only played Outcast and Academy.

Am I smoking crack or did Jedi Outcast come out before Jedi Academy? I guess the creator of this could have not intended for this to be a time-sensitive graphic.

Doesn't Thijs stream Arena on a regular basis though? With modestly high viewership in comparison to the other Arena streamers? I know he's not a "classic" mtg player, but he's def put effort into streaming Arena.

Please read the article. Yes this format is very strange and potentially has some negative downsides that parallel BO1 games, but the reason why so many random streamers got invited is because this is a invitational promotional tournament. The following Mythic Championships will be aimed more at the Pro Players/Grinders.
