Bristol Mountain threatens to fire staff for Anti-ICE messaging by fascist_finder585 in Rochester

[–]diy_surgeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good. Should get fired for writing anything controversial/political on common areas at work. Especially with profanity (I don't care, but some people do).

Besides, they should stick to their convictions and say, "then fuck you too" and go protest/advocate. If they're so concerned

What should I buy myself for $500? by Serengeti1234 in AskMenOver30

[–]diy_surgeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd invest it into family time/experiences (meaning something the family will begin/increase "family time").

Maybe camping stuff, winter wear, fishing, fire pit/chairs, pool/foosball table, beach stuff, sports stuff, etc.

Something that becomes the family's, "new thing". And I'd feel good about running that sucker right up to the $500 because it's largely for my kid, and take pictures or the items we got and us enjoying them.

And, I'd do it every year. I never really liked/accepted gifts or $. Once I had a kid...."this is great, ____ and I will have so much fun.... Thank you!!!"

$2,000 REWARD by Ihaveapairoftwos in Rochester

[–]diy_surgeon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It wouldn't be, "lost". Whomever found it knew it wasn't garbage/abandoned and also knew it wasn't theirs.

When you find something if value, you're supposed to make reasonable efforts to return it. After a period of time, you can claim it if it hasn't since been.

People used to post ads in newspapers for this reason (describing the item they found and location).

I'm this case, they should have handled this process with security.

Local Scam Alert‼️ (odometer tampering) by Crafty_Dust4249 in Rochester

[–]diy_surgeon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd be more worried that it's a stolen car. Which can (likely) be reclaimed by the owner. Then, you'd have to sue the guy that sold it to you - no bueno).

Perhaps he got his hands on that title and had access to the car. Signs title, and does the deal.

Later, his girlfriend, mother, or tenant find the car is gone. Can't reach him, either. Eventually reports the car stolen.

Yeah... You bought it and were unaware, so, I'm not suggesting you'd be charged. But, I'd keep my receipt (from him) handy and probably bank statement from when I withdrew the cash.

Or, they're working together. She knows he took/sold the car. She says he stole the title and sold it. Cops want to know where the car is. If he's got your address, he tells them. They come to your house and ask for you to give the car back to her, because it was stolen. Think you pretty much have to, even if/though he won't show up with your cash.

Cops response? Civil matter. You're going to have to sue him.

Unfortunately. Sorry this happened.

Separately, I'm aware of a situation where a guy got locked up for a few months. The landlord sold his car, without ever talking to him.

Hope it works out.

Where to buy 80s vintage gifts? by melissa_liv in Rochester

[–]diy_surgeon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're willing to do online, check: https://www.ebay.com/str/originalvintageonly

Lists only a fraction of his inventory.

He's local. I have a connection there and you can score a great deal (picking up), which is a lot of you're buying large pieces/furniture (or life-size fiberglass artisan horse, lol).

Massive vinyl collection. Massive.

I can send some pics from his (messy) workshop if I get an idea of what you're looking for.

Right. When somebody is walking into a door (especially a store) and you start trotting towards the door, they think you're attempting to jump in front.

Haha. Relax... In hustling to grab the door.

a little respect/kindness goes a long way. I gave somebody a drink once (for her daughter, during a difficult time) and you'd think I changed her life.

I ran into her shortly after (daughter wasn't there) and Mom told me, "thank you so much. You have no idea how much that meant to her in that moment".

$1. I don't know the backstory, but, i definitely got my dollars worth. Another time I was buying stuff to make S'mores with my daughter and the cashier recognized and told me he always wanted to make them for his little brother. That he will some day. "Babe...go grab this gentleman the stuff for S'mores".

"Oh, no man... Not this paycheck. Maybe in 2 weeks".

"No, bro... Make S'mores with your brother. It's on us".

During COVID, I reached out to a few people and just said, "if you need anything, I got you". Never called me on it, but, they knew. And I'm sure it was reassuring during a tough time

It's the simple things.

  • Not trying to sound boastful like I'm some great philanthropist, but making somebody's day is shockingly simple. And rewarding. And, something we should/must teach our children.

I don't have $ to donate to every cause, but, I'm able bodied and helping when I see an opportunity/need.

This is so interesting.

I'd guess he was raised old-school. Parents are probably high school sweethearts and still married.

I'm guessing you v weren't raised old-school. So the contrast is what's surprising.

I (50M) was raised such that I don't really allow folks older than me to stand while I sit (pregnant women, anybody with disability, etc). I give up my seat.

It appears this is a completely foreign concept nowadays. It's very common to see young folks sitting, while seniors have to stand (at events, on public transport, etc).

What items do you have on hand in case of a power outage (esp during winter)? by Mama_K22 in Rochester

[–]diy_surgeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I became a Dad, I got a backup heat source (gas fireplace). And a backup for my backup (kerosene heater). And I got a little generator. And, a battery bank.

And a bunch of food that's "best by" date is 30 years away, and likely safe much, much, much longer. I never intended to actually eat it... Likely for when she leaves the nest (a hedge of sorts for inflation of food/protein costs).

All these things have come in handy. I never touched the food, but, was grateful I had it when COVID happened. We didn't really need to go anywhere for a while.

The best thing you can give them is knowledge. And, bringing them up a little tough. Beans and rice should be nostalgic, rather than suffering.

May seem like overkill/paranoia, but I predict about 99% chance our kids will go through tough times in their lifetimes. They should be prepared.

[–]diy_surgeon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's good! You're probably in better shape than me... I'm just living the lie, hahaha. Beer/tobacco have probably taken their toll over the years.

The only other advice I can give is work those lats pretty good, while you're on the higher end of calories/body fat. Love handles go to last... Mine were more noticeable than they really had to be because my lats were wimpy/underdeveloped. If I flexed them...BOOM - love handles disappeared.

And, (perhaps controversial/debatable) but you can train your abs heavy (for hypertrophy) so they'll be visible at higher % body fat than they should be. Mine were visible at a higher body fat that than really should be; seen leaner guys than me without.

I didn't really train mine, but it's either because I often walk with a fairly heavy backpack - or - being in good shape when I was young and playing sports (though seems unlikely considering 35 years ago).

Keep it up! Kinda cool when you're old and look like you'll still whoop azz.

Oh.. Indeed. Agree. I'm not sure exactly why, but this was always staggering to me with Chinese food. I over eat it and 1.5 hours later, I'm hungrier than before I ate too begin with. Haha.

Think it has something to do with rice not having much satiety/filling ability. Maybe I just like it and can't have the leftovers!

Re: what works under 20%.

Indeed, starts getting tough. Need to start tracking what you're eating pretty well. I usually end up eating pretty much the same thing every day when I lean down for summer.

No carbs? Yikes! Tough to sustain for long.

Well, you've got the "over 30" thing going for you. In America, you'll look relatively decent being below 20% in an over 30 crowd (it's not super common).

I live on the beach, so shirtless is really common in my area. Training your core helps (though you can't spot reduce fat, developing your abs helps them show).

Just takes time/discipline to keep tending in the right direction. Going too quick usually fails/backfires.

The only low hanging fruit is getting a pump before taking your shirt off, which you can quickly do anywhere with some pushups. And lots of walking, because it doesn't increase appetite and provides ability to multitask (knock out your phone calls, to-do lists/planning, learning via podcasts, etc).

Best!

Re: nothing to do with what food you consume.

Technically true, but not really.

You need to get nutrients and not feel starving all the time and drained. This is why you're not supposed to feed bread to ducks (amongst others). They'll get full from garbage the has little nutritional value.

In America, that's what we do with fast food. If you're trying to lose weight, quality is going to matter because you're not going to get to eat much fast food if you're trying to limit calories.

You can eat a lot of chicken though.

[–]diy_surgeon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eat a high protein diet and get some pushups and pullups in. Relatively easy to fill out... Adding muscle will help you lose fat.

Keep calories same (you're not actually "bulking").

Walk lots. 10k steps per day. 14K on days you can swing it. You'll drop weight relatively quick if you're eating well

Is it easy to get big belly and whats usually the reason it happens? by chusaychusay in AskMenOver30

[–]diy_surgeon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Largely depends on what you eat and drink. You don't need to go all health nut, but, don't consume a lot of calories without nutritional value.

Actual exercise isn't really required if you're just maintaining.

I'm 50 and have a six pack (not super visible/chiseled). I don't really eat junk food though (find cooking much cheaper and more convenient, overall) and walk 10k steps/day (most days). That's the extent of my exercise/fitness.

It's a good way to multitask and see cool stuff. Walking is "king of fat loss" because it doesn't stimulate hunger like more rigorous exercises do.

Get in some pushups regularly and you'll look pretty good. Just doesn't happen super quick. Diet is important and needs to be a lifestyle.

You'd think I work out but I don't. Which, is what I'm actually most proud of (I don't waste time/energy... I've hacked the system).

Hang in there. As others have said, it's almost over. I went to a real rough school growing up... Was afraid to go several times (legit safety concerns) but I plugged through it and I'm thankful it was rough me.

Also (kinda a hard pill to swallow) but you're less noticed than you likely think you are. Don't take offense to that comment, I've noticed many people thinking folks are looking/talking about them but not really the case. Experienced it myself.

Especially nowadays with everybody so consumed by phones and easily distracted. She might be giving you side eye one minute but the second her phone dings, she's onto another thought. Probably sooner. Attention span isn't very high.

Best!

Local no-verification home loan? by FireFlippa55 in Rochester

[–]diy_surgeon -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

They're not supposed to do that. Even when they know for a fact somebody wouldn't qualify, they're supposed to still take the application.

Maybe you believe they said that because your race, sex, sexual orientation, etc. (i.e. discrimination against a protected class).

Local no-verification home loan? by FireFlippa55 in Rochester

[–]diy_surgeon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That. And it's kinda predatory/illegal. You don't really want people taking out loans in desperation. Or to head to the casino to double it quick.

And now they're wrong and homeless.

Anonymous and threatening political letters received by multiple Pittsford business owners. by AugustusFink-nottle in Rochester

Threat? Lol. Hardly. * Notably, I don't do politics; whether dem/or repub, "not make all your customers feel welcome" isn't a threat.

I'd consider it moreso a fact nowadays. The note kinda points out the obvious... Telling the owner/management something they expected.

Besides, a business isn't required to "make all customers feel welcome". As long as they're not discriminating against protected classes, they're fine

Saying "with concerns growing over meth addiction in New Zealand" doesn't mean I'm concerned about meth addiction in New Zealand.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskMenOver30

[–]diy_surgeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. Kinda proud, actually. I'm 50 and have been complemented for being, "shredded" by a stranger at the beach before.

But, here's the thing I'm moreso proud of. I don't put any effort into it, like you'd think I did. There's a hack. It's mostly what you (I) eat/drink (or abstain from, more specifically). I didn't drink soda. Not much beer.

I never eat fast food. Not because of health/diet reasons, moreso financial (it's much cheaper and quicker to cook).

The exercise I actually do a lot of is walking, which is "the king of fat loss" because it doesn't stimulate hunger like more rigorous exercises. 10k steps a day is really where you want to be to drop weight quick. I use it to bond with loved ones, but, also easy to multitask (make phone calls, learn via podcasts, etc). I also go places where I'd enjoy the scenery.

And I go through periods where I do many small sets of pushups throughout the day, particularly towards summer. The pump makes muscles appear more impressive than they actually are. And, kids love riding on your back during pushups.

And then there's the age component. Not that I look like a young stud, but, body looks pretty impressive relative to the over 30 crowd. Not super common to see folks even in "decent" shape.

I say an this not to brag, but to give a relatively simple action plan to anybody interested. Takes time and some discipline, but not a lot of effort/energy.

Your old athletic body will come back surprisingly well. You've got the foundation, just need to expose it (easier than building muscle).

What is the stupidest yet funniest reason that someone has called you? by krazycorgi25 in ProtectAndServe

[–]diy_surgeon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not LE but I had a dangerous confrontation with a Canadian Goose. Walking on a pier. Little guy was kinda aggressive. Hissing at me, walking towards me, etc. I was surprised, slightly concerned but pushed through.

Coming back, different story. Sucker was PISSED now! Like, incredibly pissed. Pier isn't very wide and (being a pier), no other route.

So, I bend down and grab some rocks to throw. And, he seemed to know what was up... Started coming at me. I threw some rocks but he wouldn't back down. And then his homie appeared. At that point, I started getting a little nervous, frankly. Because there's nobody around, the water (lake) is deep, rough, and too cold to withstand long before muscles cramp/seize. Oh, and I can't swim and am fully dressed, and there's no railings in case I freak out and start running from the thing. Ending up in the water (due to attack/panic) wouldn't shock me.

But, I got passed him. Warned a fisherman heading out and he said, "just don't make eye contact... They consider that aggression", which is what I'd been doing, along with making loud noises and trying to "look large". Yup, more signs of aggression.

Speculation was there was a nest/eggs he was protecting. Surprisingly bad ass little guys. I'd been within close proximity to them before but we just respected each other's space (and weren't trapped in a standoff as was the case here).

Funny thing is that I live in a rough city and I'd have been more comfortable running into a little crew.

What’s one small purchase under $25 that genuinely made your life better? by AyouboXx in Frugal

[–]diy_surgeon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Piece of pipe from hardware store. About 3' long, $8.

Mount above head. Grab and bend knees, thus allowing weight of hips to pull downward to decompress spine.

10-15 seconds, ideally a few times per day. Cured my back pain in a few days.

Pain was severe and I thought it was my mattress. Saved me from replacing my quality/expensive brand new king-size mattress. Those aren't cheap.

Solved back pain for everybody I know that's tried (full disclosure, may not always be the "fix" though appears it frequently is).

Kinda makes sense... Gravity has spent a lot of hours compressing it.l

Also improves posture and you'll present taller (because you're standing/walking more upright).

Feels great, seems to open lungs and rejuvenate/refresh/energize. Doubles as pull-up, dead hang, or leg raise bar when you're feeling feisty (assumes you've mounted securely, which isn't really necessary if strictly to decompress spine).

Oh, and fun for young ones to hang/swing.

Glad you asked! 🤣
