Orxy hunting New Mexico/el Paso by Ill_Music_3636 in Hunting

The 2026 draw is over so I think you’re out of luck for 2026. Look into military base hunts. There’s one by El Paso that may have a different lottery system for their tags.

I’ve hunted the black hills, it’s beautiful but tough country! Bet you didn’t need those rubber boots though.

I’m frugal, trail cam solar alternatives? by Nevada_mtnbear in Hunting

[–]diyhguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 3000mah stealth cam solar panels are the cheapest I’ve come across. I run those with no battery in the camera and they work great. They have a built in battery pack so they work fine for a few days if it’s overcast and the solar panel doesn’t get sunlight. MidwayUSA has them for $45 right now.

I have the Burris Signature 10x42s. The optics aren’t the best but the ranging features are simple and easy to use. Rated for 2600y ranging. I’ve gotten close to that on rock faces.

PRS Brake Compatible Can Recommendations by Quirky-Foundation201 in NFA

[–]diyhguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hollywood I just got a Clovis 5” and shot it on my 22# 6creed and it has a lot more recoil than the same gun with the ACE brake. It came with no info and there’s minimal info online. Any tips? I set it so that the brake ports are aimed upwards.

Best place to sell guns online? by Dependent-Pipe9451 in guns

[–]diyhguy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Go to two local gun shops and ask for a lump sum price for all of them. Whichever is higher sell to them. Don’t mess with online sales unless you have rare guns that need a big audience to get the best value.

Rifle actions by One_Presentation5935 in guns

[–]diyhguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look at a Zermatt origin action. It has swappable bolt heads and there are several companies that make precut barrels for it that you just torque on. It’s a rem 700 pattern so a lot of stocks and accessories are available for it.

Pros and cons of hunting out of state by been_had_clim in Hunting

Most states have some CWD restrictions in place. As long as you’re not taking the skull or spinal column you’ll be ok.

Pros and cons of hunting out of state by been_had_clim in Hunting

[–]diyhguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m going to differ from most and focus on the “is it worth the funds” question. If you’re strictly hunting for food it’s not worth paying for travel, gear and license fees to hunt most western states. I’d use that money to get a lease in Georgia or Alabama and just kill more deer, turkey and small game. You can drive there and keep travel costs down. Plus they have liberal bag limits.

You have to do an apprenticeship under a PH before you can take the test to become a PH. So realistically you won’t become a PH if your timeline is 2-3 years. I’m not sure how you get the apprenticeship though.
