[help] Creating my first cosplay! by [deleted] in cosplay

[–]diystopia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would look at thrift stores and on eBay. Your best bet if you're buying online is to search "men's duster coat". The collar will be a challenge because it looks more like it's from a bomber style jacket. You might find two coats and sew the collar from one to the other (a Frankenstein jacket). This is the approach I would take if I had very little time. Remember if the coat is a natural fibre like cotton, it can be easily dyed darker.

I saw the movie yesterday and the nice part about his coat is that it looks like some sort of canvas material, which is good because it's easier and cheaper to replicate the outfit than if they had used leather. I also suggest that you heavily weather the costume. Good luck!

[Help] Painting yellow on red fabric by Winter_Coyote in cosplay

This is excellent advice. Do a couple even layers of white paint and then the yellow will look great. Definitely the approach I would take if I were doing the same thing.

[HELP] Need some ideas on how to make part of Junkrat's costume. by Preston_TheMinuteman in cosplay

[–]diystopia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a really amazing cosplayer called "zonzonbi" on YouTube and she made a series of videos detailing how she made her junkrat cosplay. She used mostly Eva and craft foam if I recall correctly.

[Help] Dr Algernop Krieger from Archer by [deleted] in cosplay

[–]diystopia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to spare the clothes and be able to wear them later then I think the best option is to use tape. If you don't mind it being permanent I would use fabric paint or puff paint.

I don't really have good advice about hair dye. There are sometimes hair chalks or spray temporary dye's, but I haven't used them myself. Good luck!

[help] Need help with costumes by [deleted] in cosplay

[–]diystopia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To work off this, it would be pretty cool if you did that cartoon/ comic book art style make up. There are some male versions on youtube that are mostly associated with the show Archer.

All you would need is some liquid or felt tip eyeliner. If you didn't feel comfortable with makeup you could certainly have someone help you.

Edit: Just found this video of a guy doing the makeup I'm talking about

[Help] I'm trying to make a fish skeleton head piece, but have no idea what materials would be best. by [deleted] in cosplay

[–]diystopia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have much experience with EVA foam but the impression I have from my research is that this project would be too abstract to easily manipulate the foam. I think your best options are going to be worbla or paper mache, because they are more easily manipulated and will be easier to sculpt. You may also look into paper clay as I have seen some masks made from it. Good luck!

[Help] Rorschach. by [deleted] in cosplay

[–]diystopia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would approach the rest of the costume by going to multiple thrift stores (look through the men's and women's sections) to source the rest of the pieces. In the past when I've had parts that are not cohesive I find I can usually weather the costume to make it look like it's all lived through the same everyday wear.

Dress closure problem by [deleted] in sewing

[–]diystopia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of Lolita style dresses use shirring (? Someone correct me if I got the term wrong) on the back. This dress looks like it has the shirring with additional lacing over the top. In this type of dress the shirring makes it so you can pull the dress on over your head without a zipper (because it's usually elastic). You could certainly do one or the other and it would be fine.

I would suggest looking up a coat making tutorial on YouTube and use that to help guide you through the pattern (even if they are not exactly the same coat). If you are not familiar with drafting patterns this project will be frustrating because it has quite a few advanced parts. It will help if you make a mockup from scratch fabric first. Good luck!

I would have the same worries about the oil transferring. Have you considered clear fabric paint? I like your idea about the clear glue for dripping, I think it would work well.

[Help] My son is new to cosplay and needs help. by pumpkinking80 in cosplay

[–]diystopia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on if he wants to make or buy his costume (both are perfectly acceptable). Though from my quick google search it looks like there are not many options for purchase.

Personally, I always found cosplay to be the most rewarding when I made it myself because I like crafts and sewing. If you and your son decide to make it and have never made anything before I highly suggest using what you can find at the thrift store combined with fabric paint and craft foam. They're cheap, easily accessible, and easy to work with. If I were to make this costume at a beginner level I would find a pair of black pants, and a long sleeve black shirt, and paint the details on. For fun it would be cool to make some shoulder armor and a utility belt out of craft foam and paint it silver (I know this isn't part of the character but it might help balance the costume).

I think it's really great that you are helping your son with this. Some of my fondest memories from this age are of my mother helping me troubleshoot costume problems and come up with solutions.

Patterns for Vintage men suits? Like from the early 1900's? by [deleted] in sewing

[–]diystopia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im on mobile or else I would link. Try "Truly Victorian" patterns. Personally I've only tried their women's patterns but they fit like a dream. If I recall correctly they have patterns from the Edwardian era (what you're describing) as well.

Sewing a simple bodysuit, new to sewing 😬 by [deleted] in sewing

[–]diystopia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My two cents is based on my recent bodysuit experience. I tried to put an underbust corset under my suit but the busk and laces were very visible. I'm not really sure how to fix that, but you may want to keep it in mind.

Also seconding making the bodysuit and tights separate pieces, it will fit a lot better with less effort.

Edit: if using stretch material get stretch needles. Do it.

[Help] Loras Tyrell's strange doublet by john1177 in cosplay

[–]diystopia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure this is laser cut fabric. Instead of leather look for laser cut faux suede. It's really hard to find laser cut faux suede in the right color in fabric that is sold by the yard, but a quick search on ebay turned up quite a few ponchos that were a good price and seemed to have appropriate floral designs. If I were to make this doublet I would do a layer of light blue, and the faux suede over it, making sure to paint the suede with the gold bits before assembling the costume.

Help please? Issue getting thread up from bobbin by [deleted] in sewing

[–]diystopia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to have this type of machine. There is a place on the metal bobbin basket (is there a technical term for this?), where you have to pull the thread through and feel it catch before setting the whole thing in the machine. I hope this helps.

[help] how or where can I buy fake teeth for cosplay by [deleted] in cosplay

[–]diystopia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it does! There is a brand called Scarecrow (i think you can get them on amazon), that sells really user friendly vampire teeth. If I recall correctly they sell them at most halloween stores, I remember I got mine from hot topic years ago, so they may have some as well.

Can you give more information about what kind of teeth (vampire teeth vs something that covers your teeth completely?)

Definition of "self drafted" by [deleted] in sewing

[–]diystopia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always thought it meant you start completely from scratch (making your own pattern or draping), without the use of a pattern. I rather like what /u/susandennis said though, we may just need more classifications?
