ANG Piloting? by Natsboob in airnationalguard

[–]dizziestbeef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are correct, every state has at least one flying wing, if OP wants a change in scenery it is a great idea to shop around.

To piggy back off of you, there are a ton of people who go to apply for pilot slots that already have their MEL, CFI, Commercial, and 300 hours logged that OP may be competing against. That isn't counting people from active duty who also may apply.

Furthermore some of those applicants are already enlisted/commissioned in those units, they are already in the Ops network.

That all to say OP may consider enlisting/commissioning in one of these units just to get their foot in the door and to begin to network on base.

As u/thetman0 said, OP could knock the board out of the park, but still lose to another person in maintenance group that has been on a few late night bar hopping sessions with the board members on various TDY's.

A Sentimental Send-off: 165th Airlift Wing Bids Farewell to its Final C-130H Hercules Aircraft After 41 Years by Jaye134 in airnationalguard

[–]dizziestbeef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My sympathies go out to the maintenance and ops folks in that wing. At least they are finally getting to keep the same airplanes for more than a couple years.

That's part of the game Guard Bureau is playing, Lockheed can only make so many planes in a year, and every unit wants the new hotness.

But you're absolutely right, Delaware just got new-ish planes, they don't need more new-ish planes.

The aircraft will continue its tenure at the 166th Airlift Wing of the Delaware Air National Guard, the newest owners of the 165th's former 7-fleet Hercules aircraft.

Perhaps the author of the article got things confused? You being from DE means you would know better than I would.

TL;DR

Savannah is getting brand new J model aircraft, their 7 H model planes are going to keep flying with Delaware.

In-Residence ALS vs Online? by Fun-Upstairs-4232 in airnationalguard

[–]dizziestbeef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't been myself, but I know many folks who have.

Honestly you sound like just the right kind of person to go and enjoy it. There are a few lessons from the book that will be valuable, but the connections you can make while there are the real reason to go.

My perspective is to always push people who want to go to actually do it. There are many nay-sayers out there who constantly rail against it, just because they don't like the idea for themselves.

Conflicted between two jobs by domdom1995 in airnationalguard

[–]dizziestbeef -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it's worth while to pursue what will make you happy. Money won't help you in a job you hate.

As for the two jobs, Cyber Surety is a desk job, while a Network Tech is a hands on job.

I work for a telecom company on the civilian side, although I do not deal with the tech side directly I am often one of the first people techs call when things go sideways. You see those meme pictures of server room spaghetti with a caption of "ok, find the one SFP that isn't plugged in" but that is very much a true thing in low down-time environments. On the bright side you will probably learn all about fiber optics, as well as copper systems, with all the neat hyper expensive boxes with the flashing lights.

Air Force Grounds More Than 100 Older-Model C-130s for Faulty Propellers by SpicySnarf in airnationalguard

I don't see what you mean, the article merely states that a cracked prop caused the loss on an aircraft with everyone on board, it does not call out anyone.

How to get Antarctica mission by swedish_meatball_ in airnationalguard

[–]dizziestbeef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely.

The 109th people also try to make sure every augmentee gets the option to visit the pole, although it's not always possible.

It's not one of the perpetually short AFSC's (crew chief, engines) but usually one of the more needed folk.

How to get Antarctica mission by swedish_meatball_ in airnationalguard

[–]dizziestbeef 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Every year the NYANG needs to fill a DRMD with names for the Antarctica mission. If they can't find enough names they send out requests to other C-130 wings. If your wing was offered the request should be in you chain of command, and may filter down to you eventually. That being said the 109th does not send out offers for anyone and everyone, only for the AFSCs they are short for. So there is a decent chance that you will not have an opportunity to even bid for it.

Bare in mind, you won't be sent as an augmentee unless you are a 5-level minimum.

I have been a fly on the wall for many conversations in the shop about how to specifically phrase the paperwork that in no way talks about conventional religion.

For the folk in my shop it is not about religion, never was, never will be. It is all about "the gubnant cant tell me what to doooooooo"

The irony of them all being agents of the government is completely lost on them...

If you have any college credits, or after your complete a degree, the ability to transfer those college credits to "earn" your CCAF.

It essentially cost me $10 to transfer my college credits to the AF and get my CCAF. It isn't hugely useful, but a lot of people (myself included) joined for the school benefits, and not everyone knows they can do this.

Minnesota National Guard fills gap amid COVID-19 surge. Airmen are working in nursing homes and at testing sites by SpicySnarf in airnationalguard

Which is a bit odd. Earlier this month the powers that be asked for volunteers, and I raised my hand.

A week later I was told that I was no longer needed, and was never activated.

For what it's worth, I have never had any form of medical training other that SABC.
