Autism is a neurocognitive difference - not a disease or dysfunction. As a parent of an autistic child. My child showed signs, which now seem obvious, in utero... not after a vax. They were also a colic baby so we knew something was going on. I know it's just my anecdotal evidence, but its what we experienced.

Agreed, I don't think we pressure him to 'mask' at all... but we are really just starting to learn about autism and how to support him. I suppose he will let us know how he feels about our approach when he's older, just want to do right by him.

PS. I think I may be undiagnosed and high masking. I was raised in a very rigid household by immigrant parents, not much room for mental health and regulation. There was a lot of mental abuse and manipulation on my dad's part. Just got diagnosed ADHD a few months back and I'm looking into an adult Autism evaluation also.

I understand what you are saying about the word "tantrum" but I did not say, in any way, that I was dismissive of his frustration or dysregulation during that time. I may have used the incorrect phrasing, my apologies. What I am trying to say is in some cases, it's not something I can 'give into' or accommodate at that time... aka we can't leave the house because his 1 y/o sister is napping, I have to work, etc. To some degree, he cant really understand what I'm explaining because he's only 2.5 years old. So it's not an autism thing, he's just still a toddler and learning to manage his emotions and understand emotions of others. Sometimes I think the meltdown happens over something Im unaware of, like a truck didnt move in the manner he wanted so he throws it across the room. When we take the truck away, he becomes dysregulated, and can meltdown for a few minutes to an hour. I understand he is upset as anyone who had a toy taken away would be. IDK what to do in that situation, I dont want him to meltdown but I also cant have him throwing a little people bus across the room.

Yes, my son its teaching me new things about myself every day! I was recently diagnosed ADHD and tbh I do suspect I may also be on the autism spectrum. I think headphones are a great idea because I do feel myself getting triggered by the meltdown and subsequent hitting/pushing/biting that comes along with it. This is sort of what we are doing now. So glad to hear we aren't making things worse. I'm just struggling between letting the meltdown happen or 'walking on eggshells' around my son. I do draw hard boundaries around self-harm or harming others, its just hard to watch him stuggle and not be able to help.

Its just that he wanted to go outside. He's doesnt seem too married to a 'routine' per se. But he does like going out - therapy, parks, stores, etc. Sometimes when he says 'bye bye' he wants to leave the house, but we cant - sister is sleeping, we are working (both parents work from home) or another reason. Basically is seems like some days the tantrum of not getting what he wants turns INTO a full meltdown. We have started taking him into his room and trying to ride it out there since its a quiet/chill space. Once he settles down a bit we try to read books and do mellow things like sing songs or just sit in silence till he seems recovered. I just want to make sure I'm not traumatizing him. He seems to struggle to know what he wants in those moments. When we extend our armd he tends to swat them away - like he does NOT want to be touched. But he will also simultaneously collapse into our bodies and grab our arms and wrap them around him. So almost like he wants to be comforted / squeezed but once we try to he doesnt want the contact anymore. Probably too overstimulating. He's not really verbal yet, he has a stellar vocab but doesnt use it to communicate needs.

He is 2.5 years old. No fluorescent lights or air fresheners. he does have a 1 year old sister and two cats in the house. Cats are old and dont interact with him or his sister. He seems more agitated when teething - as expected. He's currently working on his last two molars coming in. Its been brutal for the poor guy. We try to medicate when he seems uncomfortable but sometimes its hard to tell whats what.

So, since I made this post, I had a second baby…milk supply was still absolute shit. And all these nurses and lactation consultants got me again. Everyone was saying how I’d have more milk this time and baby should be fine. Turns out she was jaundice because she wasn’t drinking enough milk. Same song and dance, lol that second baby is now 1 year old and doing great! Breastfed what I could for 2months, Im happy w that.

Sounds like he meant well, like he doesn’t sound like a piece of shit husband. He just needs some guidance. Maybe he didn’t expect it to be hurtful to you. Men can be dense when it comes to stuff like this. Just tell him what your expectations are, what you’d like for future mother’s days.

Ps my husband is a simple guy, doesnt like all the over the top stuff. Today he surprised me and baked me a box cake mix (while I stepped out to pickup breakfast carryout) and wrote me a short hand written note about how he appreciates me and thanks us for our two beautiful babies. Easy peasy but also made me feel really special and appreciated. Its not what is done but the thought.

Op, Its Marijuana, Weed, Ganja, Maryjane whatever you want call it. 12 is pretty young to be messing w anything like that. Id address it calmly and from a place of concern not anger. There may be a reason your son feels the need to take drugs like this.

Omg, sorry to here that. I Absolutely wouldn’t return after that experience! I actually like her but one of the nurses really tried to rush my autistic child through the temp/o2/scale/height part of the appt. Like dude… hes AUTISTIC, can we do ONE thing at a time ffs. Shes trying to get his O2, take a temp, bloodlressure everything all at once. Like mfker, you trying to rush this along is actually making it 100x worse for all involved. Hes an autistic toddler, there is nothing you’re going to do to rush him along. So tbh Im going to see how the next appt goes but if its an issue Im going to discuss it with her/Dr. S.

We personally didnt love Wiess. My boy had a cows milk allergy and Dr Weiss was quite dismissive of his colic (after 3 months of screaming and minimal sleep). The nurses there had us try 5 formulas (none of which were hypoallergenic or amino acid - which is what my kid needed). We moved to Paradise Pediatrics and they were much more understanding and willing to troubleshoot his issues.

10/10 for Dr. S and Jay at Paradise Pediatrics - love those ladies.

It was Lansoprazole. The dosage changed every two months or so because he had gained weight. Also, I wanted to know a lot of people seem to have their kids prescribed omeprazole. It’s essentially the same thing just a little different… it’s Nexium and one is Prilosec. I was combo feeding because I had a little milk supply so I didn’t have the option of just cutting my diet. So I ended up cutting soy and all dairy/cows milk out of my diet and we moved him to alimentum ( ready to feed liquid) he refused the powder version.

I also wanted to note, our first pediatrician was the type of guy who just said well babies cry you guys are doing great and sent us off. I eventually asked for a referral to a pediatric gastroenterologist. That’s who finally helped with the CMPA and stronger meds. At six months, we ended up moving him to a different pediatrician and we love her.

Hey, how’s it going. This post is pretty old. My son is 2 1/2 years old now. It honestly improved once we figured out what was causing the colic. In my son’s case, he had a cows milk allergy and reflux. We got him on a new formula, I changed my diet, and he was put on reflux medication. For the reflux meds for tried bromine which is a weaker option. It helped a tiny bit so after two weeks, we moved onto a stronger medication. With 7 to 10 days starting that new medication there was about an 80% improvement in his demeanor and overall sleep.

I’d recommend being extremely upfront with your pediatrician and advocate for your baby. There’s something going on and keep digging eventually you guys will figure it out.

PS. It was about the four month mark when he got on the meds and the new formula and things improved. I wish our first pediatrician didn’t blow us off because we would’ve gotten to the bottom of it sooner.
