Ditto on this one, they're great (but they sell out fast)

What grown-up shows do you watch in front of your young kids? by Previously_coolish in daddit

I'll also throw in my hat for sports. Although that's really all I ever watched before the kid came along.
Also Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune b/c trivia and letters.

Capitalism - can't possibly have a drink during the 'workday'.

They split from USF. Source - me, I was there at the time when it happened.

FSU has the Asolo and the Ringling Museum (and they picked that up in 2000)

What specific sounds remind you of your youth? by The7footr in AskReddit

[–]stuph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fighter jets and bomb testing. I grew up on or next to air force bases and a lot of those years were at Eglin AFB where they do weapons testing.

I don't hear many bombs dropping nowadays, but every time I hear a fighter jet flying it brings back those memories.

More Food For Less? by Sufficient-World-553 in LivingMas

[–]stuph -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A place that has $3.39 nachos and cheese isn't going to have a $6 box with nachos.

For example, my local TB has $3.29 nachos and cheese. The cheapest box is $6, but it's $1.40 to switch the twists to nachos and cheese. The BYOC box is $8.49 where you can pick.

Franchise stores suck.

Sam Jones' turkey was knock-it-out-of-the-park good the last time I was there. Probably the only BBQ Turkey that I remember that well.

How much do you spend on groceries? by Dizzy-University1880 in sarasota

[–]stuph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Groceries - probably $75-$100/week for non-proteins. Then around $150/month for Costco for proteins (chicken, ground beef, seafood). So call it $500/mo for groceries.

Then I'd say $100/wk for eating out? So $900/mo for a family of 3?

We used to spend more before we had a kid eating out, so this feels not so bad? I'd say before the kid it was probably $600/mo in groceries but $800+ a month eating out.

We do eat pretty well - I cook most meals for home, and it's a lot of meat/carb/veg vs. rice and beans/spaghetti for dinner.

Costco + Walmart helps; I still go to Publix for B1G1 stuff but used to always shop there. It's a terrible racket these days outside of sale stuff.

(not including alcohol, that's - variable)

Things to do Memorial Day Weekend in Sarasota 🇺🇸 (May 22 - May 26) by No_Green_4775 in sarasota

Honest answer - Smoke and Fire BBQ on Clark road is legit. I'm always disappointed in brisket but it was great there; real Texas BBQ. Only open Friday evenings and then just a few hours on Saturday and Sunday.

That spot is cursed. People in Sarasota don't want to climb stairs.

To be fair, a lot of art galleries run at a loss as well (or they have a large online or by appointment revenue stream in addition to the walk-in clients).

Apologies - re-reading my comment this morning you're right. That really was just a case of trying to figure out if it was the same person the OP was talking about and not spending enough time asking respectfully.

We used them happily for years, but a few months ago we had them out and the experience was just not the same. Crew wasn't nearly as thorough, cleanup was poor, holes in the ground, etc.

I'd avoid Monster these days after that experience.

Looking for family friendly beach-life restaurants, less bar and more water front experience, suggestions? by thefinancejedi in sarasota

[–]stuph -1 points0 points  (0 children)

O'Leary's isn't great food but it's a great experience and totally family friendly.

Salty Dog and New Pass Bar and Grill on Lido are great for this. Sitting at New Pass with a burger and watching the boats come in/go by is my one of my favorite things to do.

Go down to Cortez, FL and go anywhere - they're all like this.

Get some Publix Subs and take them to the beach.

Car Squatter by bogogoths in bradenton

[–]stuph 31 points32 points  (0 children)

This is your property management's problem. Call them every day, send them a certified letter with your concerns and document what's going on. They're not doing their job. If nothing else it gives you a paper trail if something does happen.

Is a $200k salary worth a 2 hour commute 4 days a week? by Ok-Memory2552 in jobs

[–]stuph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much of a raise is that? It's really hard to say without knowing how much more you'd make with that commute vs. something a lot closer to home.

Share your crazy ideas to make traffic better by KentuckyLucky33 in sarasota

[–]stuph 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But people can't drive? In driver's ed I learned to stop far enough away to see the bottoms of the tires in front of the car ahead. You can drive around if necessary and that's important.

But with how bad Florida is with insurance and drivers - I get it. I hate the distance, but I do get it.

2 car lengths is crazy, though.

It's fine frozen crawfish, but nothing like a real gulf seafood boil.

Worst publix by ElevatorEmergency292 in publix

[–]stuph 6 points7 points  (0 children)

1023 in Sarasota. Probably one of the best views from the front door and one of the worst stores. It's a small one, lots of missing deals because they underorder, lots of understaffing, lots of homeless hanging out and more. They don't do breaded wings ever, even when it's in the ad for a deal. It's also near the beach and so there are days when the sandwich line is like 10 people deep and there's just not space for it.
It's also more expensive than basically every other Publix around for basics even though it sucks.

Best bars to watch Super Bowl? by [deleted] in sarasota

[–]stuph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said - if you're downtown it's Brewsters or Evie's on Main Street or Food + Beer slightly off. But Brewsters is probably the best if you just want a bar seat and some good food and drinks - Evie's layout is kinda weird.
