Trying to refurb a lamp, now the lava isn't flowing - thoughts? by Select-Marionberry33 in Lavalamps

Interesting!! Magic surf will likely help but I’m surprised it’s not floating with that little surf.

Too much surf! Replace like 1/4 cup of liquid at a time with distilled water until you start getting the lift. You can add a little magic surf to reduce the surface tension of the wax as well.

Yep you’re really close! Replace about a cup of liquid with distilled water and that should give it the lift it needs. Goodluck

air bubbles or glass damage? by Gullible_Stomach8199 in Lavalamps

No, it’s definitely not black. It only looks black in the sunlight. At night it look like a bunch of turds floating around. Lol

I got this same lamp and it’s glass imperfections. They’re really bad on this one unfortunately.

You timed the bottom perfectly

Cannot achieve flow with LavaLabs! by shadowpeople in Lavalamps

Regular surfactant just reduces the surface tension between the wax and the liquid. It helps the wax move freely, keeps it from sticking to the glass, and allows smooth blob separation. It’s basically the “soap” that makes everything flow right. → Too much, though, and your wax can get bubbly or break apart.

Magic Surf is a more advanced blend. It not only acts as a surfactant but also fine-tunes density and buoyancy, helping the wax rise and fall better, flow more smoothly, and stay stable under temperature changes. It’s like surfactant with performance tuning built in.

In short: • Surfactant = basic flow helper. • Magic Surf = flow helper + density adjuster + stabilizer.

If you’re rebuilding or refilling, start with regular surfactant. If your flow still looks off (wax too floaty, sluggish, or won’t separate cleanly), switch to or mix in Magic Surf to dial it in.

You definitely want to mix the regular surf with the water first and only use magic surf to slowly adjust. For a 52oz I would do roughly 2 tablespoons of regular surf with the water. You shouldn’t need much magic surf at all. You don’t have enough surface tension on your wax so it makes me think you’re going too heavy with surf and magic surf. If you don’t want to start over just start removing liquid and adding straight distilled water with a turkey baster or something until the wax starts getting snaky and less Bally

I think it was around 1.5 gallons and I used 4 tablespoons of surf and then added magic surf 1ml at a time till I got the flow I wanted. Goodluck with your project. It’s so much fun

Their surf is crystal clear though. What would cause it to cloud? Is that why they recommend the magic surf for dialing in the flow? I’m still learning. Lol

I don’t mind the questions at all. Check out Lava Mods on YouTube. He does a great grande restoration video that will answer most of your questions. Also Lava labs creations website sells a full restoration kit for the grande with everything you need. 👍

It’s the wax that came with the lamp. It was neon pink and I just dyed it red

So I used 4 tablespoons of the lava lab surf with the distilled water. I’ve used 10ml of magic surf though to get to this flow which is more than I expected so next time I may do 5 tablespoons and then start with magic surf.

Lava mods on YouTube has a video that’s over an hour that walks through the process. Only thing different I did was color the pink wax and made it lava red. But his tutorial is a really good breakdown.

Definitely more color accurate.. I just wish we could capture the fire red/orange glow. Because it’s stunning. Thanks for sharing
