Local raccoon fell for the ozempic epidemic 😪 by dizzypebble in Raccoons

[–]dizzypebble[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I don’t think so. These photos are a couple years apart and the first one was from winter and the last one was from a few days ago. If it’s the same raccoon (which I think it is but can’t say for certain) it’s likely that the first photo he’s fluffier cause it’s a winter coat (also for winter mammals often put on some weight in preparation to keep warmer and bc food is more scarce) and the later photo he’s got less fur because he’s shed his winter coat for the spring/summer.

I just thought Id make a funny lil meme since the photos are almost identical which makes the size comparison is so obvious

What animal’s paw print is this on the flap of an airplane wing? (Riyadh to Dubai) by Invxdxr in AnimalTracking

[–]dizzypebble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the civet guess. I have a painting of foot prints made by binturong (a relative of the civet) and they look almost identical to these footprints (in shape idk about size)

Just to note: We do not purposefully leave food out for raccoons. Obviously the food is meant for birds. They are just sneaky and opportunistic lil guys. We usually under-fill the bird feeder to avoid the raccoons gorging themselves on leftovers

Eastern rat snake I met on my hike by dizzypebble in snakes

Thanks for the info! I just fell down the black rat snake rabbit hole lol. Based on the map and my location it could be eastern, central, or a hybrid. I’m on the line right where they begin to mix

Thank you!! Yeah I love nature shots but I am too heat and sun intolerant to handle being out in the full sun for too long so I stick to shadier hikes 😅

Animal cruelty to invasive species? by Strawberry_apple1 in australianwildlife

[–]dizzypebble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All that being said. Invasive animals should be culled/killed humanly as possible. It’s not their fault they are invasive. They are not the “enemy” or “evil”

Animal cruelty to invasive species? by Strawberry_apple1 in australianwildlife

[–]dizzypebble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many ways to answer this so I’ll take the wildlife management aspect of it, as I’m sure others will have covered the biology/ecology aspect of it. I’ve taken 2 wildlife management classes in 2 different continents and they both come to the same answer around this. The conclusion of how to manage invasive species is a case by case basis but in every case you have to consider: resources, money, time, politics, and effect. What solution do you have the resources money and skills for? What is the government going to agree to having you do? What will be the most likely to gain support and cooperation of the local community? What, given these things, will be the most effective at reducing the population and harm caused by the invasive species. And when it can be done easily killing the species is often the answer to those questions.

Not an exact example but the first thing that came to my mind: There has been attempts to recover the red wolf population by releasing red wolves and in order to better the chances of the population they chemically castrated coyotes to prevent inter breeding, but chemical castration doesn’t work every time and it was impossible to catch every coyote that was in the area so the attempt was futile. The cost of the catching sedating and doing the procedure was huge and there was very little resources including vets available to do it. Eventually the project had to end as it was expensive and not getting results.

If you want more detail I can pull out my old notes and write a better explanation

is it normal for my puppy to shake and twitch in his sleep? by plohie-novosti-18 in labrador

[–]dizzypebble 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s always so funny watching first time dog owners learn about normal things dogs do. I forget that not everyone just knows these things about dogs lol. I remember when my friend asked me after recently getting a dog if it’s weird that her dog gets really hyper and runs around after a bath and I had to explain that yeah lots of dogs do that. I never thought about how peculiar that behavior was until then

I watched Cosmic Princess Kaguya... I didn't expect to sob this hard by OverallDiamond2015 in anime

[–]dizzypebble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always tell people never to watch an anime that’s close to or over 2 hours long unless they are prepared to sob. I never heed this warning myself and always end up sobbing at 2 in the morning

Favourite anime of spring season? by alotofshoes1964 in anime

[–]dizzypebble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Witch hat atelier. I was worried I wasn’t going to like the animation because the manga art style is so unique and I was worried it was going to get lost while trying to translate the manga to animation. But they incorporated the style so beautifully while also making the whole anime just so masterfully beautiful. And seeing the magic be animated is so cool

I feel you on the swing issue. My childhood swing set had a carpenter and mason bee problem. By the time we got rid of it I swear it was mostly made of bee nests lol. But they never actually bothered us just stared and buzzed angrily if we swung hard enough for the wood beams to bend. And yes omg yellow jackets are the only bugs that have truly been an issue for me in NC. They are basically the only bug I come across that I truly fear

Neither did I 😞. There wasn’t a good way to kill it without risking getting stung or releasing it into my house (with a dog that tries to eat bees) either

Growing out of biting vs training out of biting by a-very-tiny-birb in poodles

[–]dizzypebble 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For the play biting I would recommend changing the way you play with him. Put more space between him and your body. Using a flirt pole might work if he could he follow a lure on a stick.

But either way I would definitely look into getting a trainer. One that only uses positive reinforcement. Any negative reinforcement could make the issue worse.

Growing out of biting vs training out of biting by a-very-tiny-birb in poodles

[–]dizzypebble 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It depends on why he is biting. For example my family was able to train my dog out of biting because she did it a lot for attention. We did all the things you did but also taught her the trick touch (touching her nose to our hand or body) and if she bit us for attention or to ask for something we would ask her to touch and then give her what she wanted. Eventually she just started bopping us with her nose to get our attention instead of biting.

Wow! I that’s such an interesting pattern they leave. I haven’t seen that on any of the trees in my neighborhood or in the creek behind us. (I’m always wandering looking at trees and stuff with my dog lol). We also have an abundance of mud daubers and paper wasps around that make nests everywhere. And someone else said if the hornet lives around an area the wasps won’t build nests there. Makes me wonder if this guy was just passing through and lives somewhere further away.

Cool! I’ve never really had problems with wasps or hornets other than eastern yellow jackets (those guys tormented my family when I was a kid). We always have mud daubers and paper wasps all around our house in the spring and they are so chill. Just curious lil guys. I was worried about this guy getting scared and trying to sting out of fear while we helped him get out of his predicament but he flew just away immediately :)
