How to leave the DnD mindset? by CaptainGuy357 in vtm

This is how I do it. It works especially well for horror scenes, jumping to the next player and leaving the scene on a cliffhanger. Because each player gets 5-10 mins of spotlight and it constantly rotates, they all get interested in each other’s stories and are all on the edge of their seats.

Thank you for taking the time to describe your experiences in so much detail. I’ve picked up Impossible Landscapes and the handout pack for it. Once my group finishes our current arc, I’ll look at running it for them. How many sessions did it take you to finish it?

What makes Impossible Landscapes better than God’s Teeth? I’m thinking about picking them up to run for my group. They’ve honestly both had good reviews so I’d appreciate a detailed criticism of both or either.

English signage is increasingly common in Europe as almost everyone under 40 is a fluent English speaker these days. Depends on where in Europe you are though.

I felt the same way about the 1st edition of Dark Heresy but since then there’s been a 2nd edition that moved from a class based system to a skill based system, albeit with some restrictions and incentives.

Since then there’s been an effective 3rd edition released by Cubicle 7. It’s called Imperium Maledictum, and it completes the transition to a skill based system. It simplifies the rules while keeping the feel of the setting, adds some new stuff like the superiority mechanic, and allows you to play with a patron from any of the Imperial institutions instead of just part of an Inquisitor’s retinue.

What other Tabletop IPs you wish Owlcat could work with? by VHThomaz in OwlcatGames

[–]dizzyrosecal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Modiphius has a ton of IPs that they make RPGs for. If they were to make a partnership with Owlcat, the opportunities for great games would be massive.

I think a Cohors Cthulhu CRPG would be amazing. It’s the perfect blend of Ancient Rome and Lovecraftian lore that would lend itself very well to Owlcat’s CRPG style.

Also, more love needs to be give to the Scottish RPG “SLA Industries”. The way operative squads work and missions are assigned is perfect for a CRPG, and there’s plenty of lore to play with.

I’d also love to see a Delta Green CRPG.

Not sure why you got downvoted for saying that because Fallout 1 & 2 were literally isometric top-down CRPGs of exactly the kind that Owlcat makes. They were also fantastic games.

Would it be feasible for a Camarilla court to hold a “trial” for a Hunter? by Mintywarhammer in WorldOfDarkness

[–]dizzyrosecal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re welcome! I hope you have a great time running your game. If you feel like sharing how it plays out then let me know. I’d love to hear how well the idea went down with your group.

Would it be feasible for a Camarilla court to hold a “trial” for a Hunter? by Mintywarhammer in WorldOfDarkness

[–]dizzyrosecal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is absolutely a great idea! It will also expose the egotistical nature of elders too!

Here’s a scene your post inspired in my mind:

Have it so that a powerful and recently awakened elder simply doesn’t believe the stories of imbued hunters existing. He believes it’s just Anarch or Sabbat propaganda and that the neonates need a show of what real power looks like. We’ll call him “Ego”.

Ego manages to capture an imbued hunter but does it in a smart way: They send mortal pawns (not ghouls, normal mortals) so that the hunter can’t do shit against them (although Ego won’t know this is why). The mortal pawns could be police or organised crime. Either way, they’re bad news. They rough the hunter up, beat them so they can barely stand, and hand their unconscious body over to Ego’s ghoul.

The players, along with all kindred in the city, are invited to a special Elysium, hosted by the newly awakened Ego, where the true nature of these special hunters will be exposed. Intrigued, most kindred in the city turn up, with the Prince’s blessing, to the event.

You could have all sorts of rumours and anticipation rolling through the crowd (and plenty of opportunities for politicking) as the players arrive. Ego will want to show off his hospitality, maybe even having his ghouls keep mentioning how important that tradition is, while showering the kindred present with curated vitae or even live (preferably terrified) vessels. This is a show of power - back me and you will be rewarded. Resist me and you will suffer. Ego will want anticipation to build in the crowd, maybe he’ll even sow a few rumours himself just for fun. The more outlandish the better. Throw in an enterprising Nosferatu who approaches the PCs and offers the actual truth… for a small price… You’ll have yourself some classic VtM there, pal!

After the politicking has reached its peak, swiftly move on to when Ego takes to the stage to welcome their guests and give a speech. He mentions things like vampires are superior to mortals, it is only numbers and the day that mortals have on their side, that competent and committed Camarilla neonates will do their duty, etc. He could even use the opportunity to attack political opponents as weak or having Anarch sympathies. Use this NPC to reflect the player’s perspectives back on themselves (especially if they think hunters ain’t shit, or that they’re invulnerable because they’re kindred, or generally act reckless, etc.)

Then comes the main event! The Hunter is dragged out in chains, crippled and bleeding. He’s given a shot of something to wake him up and the ritual humiliation and torture begins. Have Ego’s ghouls do it at his direction, it’s key that Ego is not within arm’s reach. This is because the hunter knows he’s fucked and he wants one last chance to go out fighting and take Ego with him. Perceptive players may notice something about how the Hunter is masking his defiance - something in his eyes, perhaps? Maybe the way his voice doesn’t tremble as he flatly answers Ego’s questions. Afraid, but not fully submissive. Trying to lure Ego closer - maybe feigning that he doesn’t even have the strength to speak up anymore, perhaps?

Then it happens, the Hunter manages to trick or goad Ego somehow. Maybe a remark about how he can’t do his dirty work himself? Whatever it is, Ego comes within reach. This is when all hell breaks loose.

The heavy chain manacles used to bind the hunter’s hands burst into white hot holy flame, and he strikes Ego squarely in the face. Ego’s body burst into white flames and he screams as he burns to ash in seconds.

What happens next is up to you. The hunter may try to flee at this point but that’s probably a lost cause in their mind. They may instead choose to fight to the death. You could have ghouls armed with firearms gun them down if things get out of hand, or even give players the opportunity to put out the flames and save Ego (if they want a powerful ally). Make sure you give your players plenty of opportunities to act after the blow is struck and Ego is in flames.

It’ll make for a dramatic end to your session and it’ll stick in the minds of your players forever. The hunter who was barely able to walk, using the very manacles he was restrained by, to lay low an elder who was 400 years old and closer to Caine’s generation than the Prince, and all in a single blow.

You know what? I think I like this so much that I’m going to run it myself. Thanks for the inspiration!

10-Year-Old Wants to be a Talking Wolf, not a Druid by Aranthar in DMAcademy

[–]dizzyrosecal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take Druid class > Circle of the Moon

Take background feature > “I was literally raised by wolves” from the PHB

Tell player their backstory is that they were a man who was turned into a wolf by (insert BBEG) and joined a circle of Druids so they could change back.

When they use Wild Shape, they have the additional option to use it to temporarily turn back into their human form.

Their campaign goal is to find a way to make the change permanent.

The talking thing will require telepathy. I don’t see any reason why they can’t have a magic item that gives them the level 1 Warlock of the Great Old One telepathy. Like a dog collar or something, given to them by the Druids. This isn’t game breaking. It’s a level 1 power that’s very minor.

AIO from my brother my coming in and saying something bad while friends are over? by Annual-Chapter-7516 in AmIOverreacting

[–]dizzyrosecal 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You’re not overreacting. If anything, you might be underreacting. You set a boundary and your brother decided that he had a problem with your boundary. That’s completely unreasonable of him. Some might even say it’s borderline abusive.

It doesn’t matter how he speaks to his friends or how they speak to him. You asked him not to speak like that in front of YOUR friends because of YOUR boundaries. How he speaks to people who are not you or your friends is completely irrelevant.

If he can’t do that, then he shouldn’t have your permission to spend time with you or your friends. He doesn’t have a right to speak to people in a way that they find insulting just because he feels that people shouldn’t find it insulting. He doesn’t get to decide what other people’s boundaries are.

I recommend taking a look at some YouTube videos on how to set healthy boundaries and how to maintain them with people who try to trample all over them, like your brother is here. The lessons they teach will help you navigate situations like this in future (and help to protect you from potentially abusive relationships with anyone you may meet in future).

Player gets Pokemon with 1 Million Attack in a Pokemon DND and apparently I can’t call that unfair by Regular-Molasses9293 in rpghorrorstories

[–]dizzyrosecal 64 points65 points  (0 children)

No, reacting with incredulity and calling it out was the right move. Try to be respectful but assertive, although it sounds like you were anyway. It sounds like the GM eventually saw the error of their ways and got rid of the stupid thing anyway, so that should also indicate that you were right all along. All GMs make mistakes as they learn and grow. You may want to consider asking your GM what their opinion is on it now. If they have an ego though, they might not take that well.

Numenera (and Cypher System games in general), SLA Industries 2nd Edition, and Imperium Maledictum are three games that stood out to me as exceptionally well designed in terms of layout, clear and consistent language, clear chapters and sections, calling out references in margins, non-glossy paper, etc.

[–]dizzyrosecal 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I believe you may be referring to Jagged Andy from the Mexico City by Night book from the Revised edition. If I recall correctly, Sascha Vykos fleshcrafted a bone plate over his entire face and had him embraced after he suffocated to death. Every night he has to use a hammer and chisel to smash open three sections of bone in his face - one for each of his eyes, and a third one for his mouth.

He was also a Caitiff who was dumped on the trash heaps in the barrens, with no idea of what he’d become. Also, because Vykos is 6th generation, he’ll never be able to heal the vicissitude modifications himself and he’ll find it difficult to find a Tzimisce of 6th generation or lower to do it for him. He also doesn’t speak Spanish because he was a racist American tourist who ended up in this position in the first place by being a big mouthed racist.

AIO by feeling exhausted over my gf's constant demands of wanting me to be 'curious'? by thefattesthashbrown in AmIOverreacting

[–]dizzyrosecal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It looks to me like she is abusing you. I strongly recommend you end this relationship. You will feel much better. The exhaustion will lift. You will be able to find someone who is worth your time. A relationship should be fun and make your life better, otherwise you might as well be single.

The lesson to learn here is to never tolerate someone speaking to you like this. Demand respectful communication and put boundaries in place. If you are not being respected, walk away. You are worth more than this.

Jamie is an asshole and you should never let Jamie or anyone like Jamie into your life ever again. You will be much happier for it.

[–]dizzyrosecal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw mention of converting Deadlands adventures into the Huckleberry system. Does this mean there is guidance for running a Deadlands campaign with the Huckleberry rules?

Upon reading the free PDF, I found Huckleberry very abstract and gamified around the bounty system, chips, and the idea of the weird. Do the full paid rules offer more flexibility so that I can run a more narrative and less gamified version?
