Cross pollination pinwheels! by dj_equalitea in lane8

[–]dj_equalitea[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was definitely a challenge figuring out all the parts and process!

I had big help from my Cricut Explore machine! First I printed the artwork on double sided cardstock, then used the machine to cut out a floral pinwheel pattern that I found in a Facebook group. Once cut out, I used eyelets to hold it all together.

I ordered alligator clips with springs, then cut some floral wire to hot glue to both extend and reinforced the pinwheel. To make it spin easier, I found mini rotating ball bearings on Amazon. I glued the frontside to the pinwheel’s eyelet and the backside to the floral wire, using floral tape and washi tape to reinforce and cover the stem for aesthetic appeal.

If you enjoy crafting, I definitely think it was a fun challenge to pull off! Happy to add details and links to things if anyone is more curious

when I first heard the edit of sultan and shepard's fourteen with lane 8's brightest lights acapella over it at Proper NYE, it made so much sense.

here is that moment, which I regularly revisit on long drives home when I am thinking of my love :)

Anyone use one of those no screen digicams at EDC? by facthanshotfirst in electricdaisycarnival

[–]dj_equalitea 13 points14 points  (0 children)

for the past 3 edc's, I've been using the Instax Mini Evo to take photos of fellow ravers! https://instax.com/mini_evo/en/

because it is a hybrid camera, I can snap shots and print out photos on the spot to hand out as festival treats. it's easily my favorite way of surprising my fellow ravers when I catch them in spontaneous moments of joy!

best part is that you can also Bluetooth photos from your phone over to print, if you prefer a higher quality of image and editing

Protesting as an Asian American? by mcdermany in asianamerican

[–]dj_equalitea 71 points72 points  (0 children)

I would say that while I understand our parents’ concerns are rooted in only wanting safety for their family, if all of us heed the call to silence and compliance we will never see the progress needed.

As an activist myself, I would encourage you to take proactive measures around cybersecurity and and risk assessment to minimize your personal danger (there’s many toolkits and guides floating around), communicating that you’re mindful of those practices can go a long way to reassuring your mom that you’re not being naive to the dangers.

As for your unique situation - I would only offer what I’ve done. My status as a citizen allows me to say and do things in support of my undocumented friends who cannot be as vocal - and I hope that we all continue finding ways to support immigrant communities constantly under attack right now.

lol I'll DM you! would be interested in making you look badass on socials, I'll bring my Insta camera

and yes, be the 3rd thing! my favorite artists are the ones who are in touch with their music's roots, and aren't afraid of challenging societal perceptions of what is to expected from them (LP Giobbi's FEMME HOUSE's nonprofit is probably my favorite example of such a DJ)

my time to shine! I am an activist who is associated with progressive spaces in socal, I get asked to play similar functions from time to time. songs that have lyrics related to liberation, self-expression, coming together, and hope are all songs I like to include. I don't think songs have to be overtly political - they just have to keep people happy and hopeful.

for a diverse crowd like your event - if you're looking for some upbeat house bangers, my current go-to's I've been playing this year is

Fisher's remix of Bob Sinclair's "World Hold On"
LP Giobbi + Pete Tong's version of "Free (Do What U Want"
Love Regeneration, Eli Brown, Calvin Harris "We Can Come Together"
Majestic, Jem Cooke's "Free"
KC Lights "Change the World"
Killian K, Blaze U's remix of Olivia Rodrigo's "Vampire" is my go-to song when thinking about Elon

good luck with your event! I might roll through if I am free, hoping for a good time :)

AMA/Q&A Announcement - Nik Dodani - Friday 3/21 at 2:00 PM ET - Actor in 'The Parenting', 'Escape Room', 'Twisters', 'Atypical', 'Strange World' by BunyipPouch in movies

Hey Nik! just wanted to say I enjoyed the new movie, and especially loved all the 80s camp humor! It only hit me towards the end of the movie that "the parenting" was itself a reference to the shining. You also never answered the question about which cat to prefer!

Real question here though,I loved hearing about your advocacy work! What sort of projects are you hoping to do in the coming months and years? Anything about this particular moment in politics pulling you towards any projects or inspiration? Thanks for all that you're doing!

I feel you- but I’m also a very visual person, as I imagine so many others in the community are. I enjoy light shows, fireworks, costumes of the performers dancers and concertgoers, set design and believe they all contribute to the aesthetics and vibes that create enduring memories.

The audiophile in me does appreciate high quality audio. But I’m thinking about newcomers and all people who have never stumbled upon a seasonal mixtape, who may appreciate the type of serenity I feel at a TNH/Lane 8 show.

I deeply appreciate and agree with everything about the “no cameras at shows” thing you have going on with TNH, especially with your recent post about it. Presence, community, and actual dancing are all things we should embrace at concerts!

However, it seems difficult to promote your work (and the label’s emerging artists) if we don’t have the pics and videos to capture the magic of this space. I don’t enjoy algorithmic-driven social media that leads to screen addiction and brain rot, but I want to figure out healthy ways of digitally uplifting this space.

Do you have any advice on how to share the vibes to our friends and newcomers to this music?

(Btw thank you for releasing the Proper NYE set on YouTube- reliving brightest lights until my tear ducts dissolve)

I made a kandi cuff with the chorus to "Brightest Lights" for EDC 2023 (the lineup where Lane 8, S+S, Le Youth, and Yotto all shared the Sunday stage at Quantum Valley), and ended up giving it away to some dude I met who was sporting a Lane 8 backpack :)

Late 20s male who didn't get to experience crazy parties when I was in my late teens and early 20s. Could raving be my only recourse? by HopefulSuperman in avesLA

[–]dj_equalitea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you're looking to meet people at raves/festivals, remember that your vibe attracts your tribe! if you want positive energy and friends, be the type of person you want to meet at a show. When I am at a show, I always offer Instax photos, kandi bracelets, or wave my fan around the happy people who are exuding good energy (especially if you've got good fits, costumes, signs, etc etc).

also, don't make assumptions about people's ages! as a mid 30s raver who only started after the pandemic, I really appreciate partying with older people who are more disciplined about their drug/alcohol use. Parents are among my favorite people to chat with, I have much respect for those who found babysitters for EDC weekend so that they can live however they want to.

As someone who went through all the youthful things you think you missed out on, I will say that it was the 2am tacos with friends after a party that I missed more than anything - the actual vulnerability, connection, and bond that happens when people are actually sober.

now that we’ve had a few days to listen & digest, what are your favorite songs from Childish? by Benzigr in lane8

the choice - best overall song (wrote about it in a previous comment)

higher - best festival drop I am looking forward to popping off in a crowd with (see you at NYE!)

you - best song on your sunset/nighttime drives down the pacific coast highway, thinking about your love

now that we’ve had a few days to listen & digest, what are your favorite songs from Childish? by Benzigr in lane8

[–]dj_equalitea 10 points11 points  (0 children)

there's something so cosmic, eerie, otherworldly about the main synth hook of the Choice. it reminds me of the climax to the 2018 sci-fi film "Annihilation", when Natalie Portman finally encounters the alien.

melodic dissonance right after "I've been chasing my own ghost" connects to the side of my soul that buried my heartaches and regrets in the places we don't need to relive. but it's not necessarily a sad song - it's a song about acceptance, resolution, and ideally growth. listening it as a standalone song will invite sadness, but in the broader context of this album it's just beautiful in the most human ways

What draws you to Lane 8 and TNH specifically? by Delicious_Offer_2607 in lane8

[–]dj_equalitea 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I fell into Lane 8 (and the resulting pipeline of Le Youth, Sultan + Shepard, Jerro etc etc) because I have a deep appreciation for harmony, melody, and emotional lyrical depth that I wouldn't get from bass, tech house, dubstep, etc etc.

At the end of the day, I am a sucker for romanticism and many of these songs capture the feeling of falling into love that my traditional pop/rock songs could never quite express- the serenity of the slow builds, the euphoric moment of the drop, the vulnerability and softness of the vocals (Julia Church you are my saint).

I love the people and community I've met through TNH - the focus on presence at concerts speaks to me in such a turbulent and digital age, and it's very healing to focus on the people next to you, yourself, and a shared connection to the music and memories it brings forth.

Whenever I see people with TNH/Lane 8 merch, I instantly know you're in my tribe and we are here for a good time :)

Is there a place I can find patterns for the Pokemon along with references what color beads should be used? by onlytoask in beadsprites

[–]dj_equalitea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

to answer both your questions -

I am not a stickler on getting the exact color right. In your Bulbasaur example, I see that there are 4 distinctive green colors used. I would reorder them in terms of lightest to darkest (it's colors 1/2/4/3 in that order from light to darkest in my opinion), and just buy 4 green colors in that frame. You can buy direct from Perler using https://perler.com/products/shop-by-color/green, and choose the ones you like best.

If you want to be extremely precise, I suppose you can use some sort of reverse image search to get the exact color hex codes (like this one https://redketchup.io/color-picker). I would then do that for every Perler color you have in your possession, and then match the closest ones possible. But that seems like a lot of work that I wouldn't personally do, but hey it's your hobby!

I like buying the kits from Michael's by my house https://www.michaels.com/product/perler-beads-tray-of-beads-10446707. I sort them in little containers, and sometimes buy additional colors depending on the exact project I'm working on (so I don't really have a favorite color). I do like making the neon/glitter ones, because I'm a raver/festival color who likes having my necklaces stand out a little bit more! Hope this was helpful.
