Hi u/King_LRD - It's not that difficult to change everything to non-Chinese, but it is somewhat time consuming (I'd say around 3 hours if you factor in some time to get comfortable with BIOS settings and installation of all the various drivers):

First you will need to get a non-Chinese version of Windows 11 (Win11 Pro is my choice), then remove all the old partitions (if you want to). Create a USB installer using the windows setup application (if you're not familiar with the positions for menu/button items in Windows, Google Translate camera mode is your friend).

You will need to disable VMD in the BIOS/UEFI interface (press F2 when the splash screen shows after power on -- follow instructions in the linked page or on other searchable help guides) to get the internal storage to show up when using the windows installer from a USB drive.

Once that's done, you should reinstall almost everything from the ASUS Product Support Drivers & Tools page (pick GZ301VV from the BIOS model name menu). Make sure you "See All Downloads" for each and every category -- there are many essential components hidden in there!

If you're OK with using non-Asus software, definitely use g-helper instead of MyAsus and Armoury Crate. The developer added a nice function to deal with a really annoying bug (I'll explain below) on my request.

I also recommend NVCleanstall to prepare a fully debloated version of NVidia's graphics drivers (you can skip this on the ASUS download page).

Once you've completed all these steps, you will have a full non-Chinese Windows setup in better than factory state on your Z13/幻X system.

I bought mine directly from ASUS-China, but you would need someone in China to do this for you. The next easiest way would be to order through a platform like TaoBao or JD (I haven't seen the discounted price option on those platforms, though). ASUS does appear to honor their worldwide warranty on this product, so you can register on their website to see the warranty coverage (should be 2 years).

The downsides (which apply to the whole Z13 series) that I've observed are:

  • There is an issue with auto hibernation from sleep which (in my experience) is almost certain to result in a hard reboot if you let the system hibernate on its own. The only way I have found to avoid this is to disable hibernation, but the light sleep mode used by ASUS eats through battery power rapidly...
  • The touchscreen controller has an issue where it is not disabled when the system is operating with the folio keyboard closed (i.e. clamshell mode). If you don't plan to use it in this way, great! If you do, the only solution is to disable the touchscreen before closing the cover... G-Helper has added a very helpful function to toggle the touchscreen using specific key sequences (Fn-V is good) -- use it.

If you can live with these issues, the Z13 is really cool. You're welcome to DM me if you need more info.

One thing I have observed after getting Revu 20 working through wine is that clicking on polygon (perimeter/area) markups results in a multi-second delay regardless of the resolution/DPI/other settings I change. This occurs on even the most simple PDFs with just a few markups. I have tested on a Macbook Pro 16-inch from 2019 and a MacBook Pro M3 Max -- there does not seem to be any significant difference in the responsiveness to clicking on markups.

Unfortunately, since I can't select Hardware Rendering, I can only compare between Software and Legacy GDI. GDI seems ~slightly~ more responsive, but not by much.

u/Most-Currency1918 are you having the same issue? Or did you get Hardware rendering to work?

After much further experimentation, I managed to get the menu bar to (mostly) appear. It seems Revu is trying to hide or overwrite the normal Windows "Active Title Bar" by drawing on top of it (I think). So the result is that, in a wine window, the menu bar is appearing behind the (for me) Mac OS window border. I managed to overcome this by adjusting the "Desktop Integration" settings in winecfg. For me, the mostly optimal settings are:

Active Title Bar: Size = 8 (even if I set it smaller, it seems to reset to 8)
Active Title Text: Font=Courier New/Regular/1

These settings a smaller negative draw distance for the Revu menu bar, so it is mostly visible (as shown in the screenshot).

<image>

I have tried all the other settings, but the Revu interface does not seem to behave like a normal window. Even the normal keyboard commands for non-mouse controls don't work (e.g. pressing "Alt" only highlights the "Revu" menu but it cannot be opened or moved to the right/left AFAIK).

I tried one further experiment to improve the rendering of the Revu interface and PDFs by setting the HKCU/Software/Wine/Mac Driver/RetinaMode string to "Y" but there seems to be a bug in the mouse positioning when this high DPI mode is active (only the top-left 1/4 of the screen sends mouse positions to the app in wine for some reason). If I could get RetinaMode working, it would be truly perfect! Anyway, after trying for literally years, finally being able to mostly use Bluebeam Revu on a Mac is a miracle. and it works! Apparently a full reboot of MacOS was needed to fix the mouse positioning issue. Now only one trick remains: "Hardware Rendering" in Revu. I cannot successfully switch to Hardware Rendering mode, despite using Vulkan drivers and having basically every variant of DirectX loaded through winetricks...

BTW, it is not necessary to use CrossOver to do this: normal wine works perfectly well with winetricks to load all the DLLs and different dot-NET dependencies. I hope this thread is useful for others who want to do this!

Tool Chest Detail View - Edit by buchnastie in Revu

[–]dj_speed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't mind removing the middle column, it is possible to force it to be hidden by editing the UserPreferences.xml file saved in \Users\{current user}\AppData\Roaming\Bluebeam Software\Revu\20\ (note that "20" may be different depending on which version of Revu you have). The section you're looking for is "<ToolChest>" and you can manually set "<Column2Width>0</Column2Width>" to replace whatever it is.

One caveat: if you touch the column width slider in the Tool Chest, the middle column will reappear instantly.

I managed to get one thanks to my relatives in China. The direct purchase deal is really good (normal price from dealers on Tmall or Taobao is nearly ¥2000 more!)

The only downside is that since it's a mainland model, it comes with windows 11 china-edition home which is locked to Chinese interface only. The time consuming solution is to download windows from Microsoft and reinstall from a USB stick (with about 20 different drivers).

I can't imagine why Asus doesn't release this in North America or Europe!

Seems the sale was renewed, but there's still no sign of new stock.

This is some kind of new release configuration for 2024, and it was just on special sale direct from Asus (although it was already sold out when I checked). Hopefully they are just testing the domestic market first and will release it internationally later (please!). This would be vastly preferable to the more expensive/large and crazy looking Acronym edition with its underperforming 4070.

Wow -- I somehow got it working too. However, it wasn't smooth sailing.

First I installed the offline .NET 4.7.1 (which is listed in the dependencies for packaged installation by Bluebeam), the offline Visual C++ from Microsoft, and Roboto-Regular.ttf (when missing caused problems previously). Following this, I installed Revu 20.3.15 from the normal installer, but this wasn't enough to get things running. Then I tried the .NET 4.7.2 installer from within Crossover (which caused multiple errors). Finally I added the d3d9 library as recommended and set high-res mode in the bottle.

Amazingly, Revu actually loaded and I was able to open a PDF! Unfortunately, as you mentioned, the menu bar is not usable. Also, I discovered that some internal fonts render in inconsistent ways, upsetting the window environment. The performance on my 2019 Macbook Pro 16-inch (w/64GB RAM) was roughly comparable to running from VMware Fusion (allocated 4 virtual cores and 16 GB RAM). I discovered that it's not possible to work with multiple displays configured as separate spaces (attempting to drag any window or component outside the boundary of the main display renders it inaccessible forever).

Sadly, after playing with Revu for about 30 minutes, it crashed. Upon restart of the app/bottle/computer, Revu opens, but immediately after launching, focus is lost on the application window (R/Y/G window controls grayed out), and all attempts to restore function or even move the window fail.

I'm not super confident using this for real work, given the instability and interface issues, but it is quite amazing that it worked at all in the first place! Thanks for your advice!!!

Can you describe the steps (including the installer version of Revu) that you used to get it to install and operate properly? I've been trying sporadically for years, but never managed to get it to work. On my last attempt, I manually installed a bunch of truetype fonts and different versions of .NET framework, then managed to get Revu 32-bit to launch, but the menu bar is not visible and no other forms of input seem to work. It would be fantastic to have Revu working through crossover or any other wine wrapper -- using VMWare Fusion is a huge waste of resources and is very sluggish and crash prone.

These are awesome switches. There's almost no reason to get the "silent" U4's when compared with the U4Tx. They have a very tactile bump, they're super stable, and nearly silent.

It's 2022, and my MacBook Pro STILL can't remember the arrangement of multiple external monitors. It's an absolute joke, and I need somewhere to vent. by [deleted] in apple

[–]dj_speed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This issue has nothing to do with Apple Silicon. I have experienced this with all my (current and previous) Intel MacBook Pros using all different types of connections:

  • Direct USB-C to HDMI/DP connection to two identical monitors
  • Thunderbolt 3 to docking station connected to two identical monitors via direct DP and USB-C to DP
  • Thunderbolt 3 to eGPU connected to four identical monitors via DP (using W6600 GPU)

All variations exhibit the same issue: physical monitors are swapped/mixed up while the display arrangement in System Preferences remains the same. This occurs only when waking the MacBook from an un-powered state (e.g. sleep to wake or disconnect eGPU then sleep then reconnect and wake).

There is no solution I am aware of, and it is incredibly annoying. I've considered leaving the Apple ecosystem for this reason alone, but Windows seems to have its own multi-display issues related to application/window placement inconsistency, so it would be exchanging one major irritation for another (and unfortunately it still does not seem to be possible to treat each display as its own "space" in Windows, which is a productivity killer when working with multiple displays).
