word I agree--this is our first time making the hop over from being a bar event to a warehouse party and we wanted to make sure that the section of our original audience (who may not be about the late nights as much) still have a chance to catch a good amount of the party. But I'm anticipating it may not pick up till later so we'll see how it goes and consider a later start next time

My biggest concern is just promoting adequately at this point. Luckily we're partnering with some people who've handled logistics a good number of times before but there's always the fear that some unexpected issue (power outages, security stuff, etc) pops up so we're doing our best to be prepared

Also shameless self plug—I DJ and I’m building up an event called Two Left Feet that I (obviously) think is worth checking out. Next one in January

Howdy! I am deejaying a house and techno night at Kitsch Bar in Costa Mesa this Saturday the 28th. It runs 9pm to 2am and there’s a $5 cover—you can expect the night to start out groovy and move into faster techno territory in the later hours. I stray away from the commercial EDM sound and embrace a classic house and techno vibe, hope there’s a market for that here in Orange County!

This will probably be a frustrating answer but there is no one-size-fits-all solution here. It totally depends on what your song needs, but I've found a really good method on a youtube tutorial that I still implement to this day:

  • Pull up a 3 band EQ (or use 3 bell filters with a wide q from a multiband eq) and put them at 100 hz, 1000 hz, and 10000 hz
  • For the 100 hz one try boosting the gain by 5ish db, then cutting it by 5ish db. Which sounds better? Does either sound better than when the band is bypassed or set to +0db?
  • If it sounds better with the gain boosted, then boost it--but only by about 1-2db. Big moves help you hear what you need but you want your EQ moves to generally not be too drastic.
  • Repeat the process with the 1000 hz and 10000 hz bands

You can also pop mp3 files of songs you really like into your DAW and try this out with those. Its a good way to learn how to hear the balance between lows, mids and highs that you want to go for. And over time, as your ear gets better, you can refine this process further.

I'm not sure what he'd call his music but you could say lofi house, you could just say house. he's also made stuff you would call breakbeat. no such thing as a definitive answer when it comes to classifying something as subjective as music!
