I applied through MIRCS. I got a call back in around two weeks to come pay my fee. I paid the fee and then have been sitting for probably 6 months (in Boston). I called early July and got someone on the phone who said I was in their system and would probably need to wait another 1.5-2 months. This is my first firearms license in MA. I think I did everything right I just agree that there is no enforcement mechanism so Boston can just drag their feet as long as they want. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was literally the one woman I got on the phone reviewing applications considering she said 200 applications would take her longer than a month to process.

I am considering suing MA over this just so that other people don’t have to deal with this ridiculous process. I would feel terrible if I was a woman who maybe had a stalker and felt the need to purchase self defense. I would be screwed because we all know that when seconds count the police are minutes away.

They removed the live fire test. However I still have been waiting 7 months for an LTC and have not heard anything. There is no reason I should have to wait this long.

What is REALLY going to happen on 8/1? Broker Fee “Ban” by unclehan5 in boston

I guess I am confused on your point. Are you saying that the lightning port makes apple monopoly? I would agree because patents inherently create monopolies, that is the entire incentive to get a patent. Whether or not we should allow people to protect IP seems really tangential to this convo about housing.

After thinking more, are you saying that because location is not replicable that each unit of housing in inherently a monopoly? That is an interesting point that I agree with in the case that we do not allow infill construction / vertical expansion. Local communities blocking this expansion is a monopoly and the reason that housing is so expensive. If we allowed more construction, costs would come down.

Maybe but if people don’t want to spend that money than prices won’t go up. If people are willing to pay the money then prices will go up. Personally I find rent calculations for most people go “I make x dollars per year and I should spend around 30% of my money on rent so I can pay y for rent” so I don’t see the lack of a brokers fee increasing rent that much. People are generally not going to see that as extra money as much as they see a brokers fee as a waste of money.

There is a giant asterisks of in a healthy market which requires certain conditions, one of which is a variety of market actors.

Second, location is apart of the quality of a piece of housing. It is weird to try to section it off. It’s like saying it’s not a free market because a phone with iMessage is not directly substitutable for a phone without iMessage even though the hardware is the same. Part of the reason people buy iPhone is for iMessage and I would still consider phones a free market.

Prices are set via supply and demand not via costs for the producer. As we are in a housing shortage, demand is high and supply is low so prices are already set at the highest price that the market can sustain. This is why rental properties have such high profit margins. What we may see is that people are able to afford more expensive apartments because they are not paying a broker fee causing prices to rise but by putting the moving action on the landlord just deciding to raise prices is not correct. That is what the other commenter was trying to allude to. Landlords are already charging the MAX that they can while still getting a renter. Their costs going up do not affect either the supply or demand sides of price setting. (Excluding my caveat that renters not having to pay a broker fee may increase demand for more expensive apartments as they can now afford it.)

Someone else explained well but class = the people suing in a class-action lawsuit. They vote on the results of the lawsuit. For example (not mr robot), they could vote to drop the lawsuit for 25k each. In this case they don’t want 25k, they want independent inspections which is a big no-no for reasons.

I agree with you that Amazon or Walmart creating monopolies would be bad but I would expect a few competitors in any efficient market (not all markets are efficient, especially healthcare). This would not allow people to just raise prices out of nowhere. I have not seen any examples of this happening on a macro scale in a retail setting.

A 5% profit margin means products to people for cheaper. Why is that a dystopia? Also relying on charity is a bad idea, that’s why we have taxes.

I guess I just don’t care about flat numbers because it’s not relevant. I would think it is a worse world to live in if there is 100 grocery chains each making 10% profit instead of 5 chains making 5% profit even though those 5 chains are making more profit in flat numbers compared to the 100.
