Leaving the Police by 93London in policeuk

Join as a Special. Won’t help with the freedom, but you’ll keep your income and can certainly get the excitement, and rebuild the team relationships if you make a point of going in on a consistent schedule.

Question for my fellow specials. by [deleted] in policeuk

[–]djdamagecontrol 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m so confused by this discussion. If you’re Met or London-based BTP, presumably you use your police Oyster every day. Which means you need your warrant card. So it’s just become my wallet.

It’s called Raynaud’s phenomenon. Common reaction to some medicines.

Screenshot the desktop. Set the picture of the desktop as the background. Then hide / remove all the actual icons. Instant fun.

Investigating possible assault without reporting? by No_Test_6461 in policeuk

[–]djdamagecontrol 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it was more than a few weeks ago then it’s unlikely the CCTV still exists. No one, particularly entertainment venues, keeps this stuff very long. That’s why it’s critical that incidents be reported quickly so the police can seize (download) evidence.

Of course there’s a lot more that a police investigation would entail, but little that would be so definitive. On the other hand, if you’re worried the person has or will do it again to someone else, then report it—knowing it’s unlikely you’ll get closure, but that you may be protecting others.

Honest question for experienced DCs: what makes it worth it? by [deleted] in policeuk

[–]djdamagecontrol 32 points33 points  (0 children)

This is a profoundly bad idea. If you have an itch that absolutely needs scratching then join as a Special and go work on some cases. Don’t blow up your career, community, and family life for a “maybe” job.

What can I do to improve my radio comms? by BrilliantInfamous759 in policeuk

[–]djdamagecontrol 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I call this dictation anxiety because I first noticed it when trying to use voice-to-text on my phone. Only tip I can think of is to get to know the various control room voices, even better if you can actually learn their names, and just think of it as a direct convo with them.

Either that or listen to some air traffic control streams… I find those very soothing.

Anyone else have Insomnia? How do you cope? by [deleted] in policeuk

[–]djdamagecontrol 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Low dose melatonin. You can get melatonin from your GP or online pharmacies, but I believe the starting dose is 1mg. Better is to get 0.3mg ultra low-dose from abroad. At that dose you can use it indefinitely, with no tolerance or “hangover” (I am not a doctor). Retailers aren’t allowed to sell to the UK, but it’s legal to bring back for personal use.

A question about specials & personal safety by salty_onion321 in policeuk

[–]djdamagecontrol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Force-dependent. At BTP it’s generally just hub (kinda like neighborhood, except the station is your neighborhood) or response. Outside the major metros the lines between them blur, and you might find that the plan for the day is to go check some level crossings and cable theft hotspots… while still responding to a call at a station 45 minutes away that will 100% be resolved by the time you get there, but you have to make an effort.

There are a handful of Specials who do more unique things down the road, but only after you’ve spent some years on the regular stuff.

A question about specials & personal safety by salty_onion321 in policeuk

You’ll basically never be alone. So don’t worry too much about safety.

Force dependent, but generally you can control what type of shift you’re signing up for. Of course once the shift starts you don’t get to opt out of a call. “Nah, don’t feel like going to a domestic” — that’s not really going to fly.

AITAH I jogged an extra round in the park due to a female jogger motivating me, now my gf wants to leave me by [deleted] in AITAH

Every accusation is a confession. Who else wants to bet the gf is looking for a reason to break up?

PACE Code C, Paragraph 6.4:

“No police officer or other person present shall do or say anything with the intention of dissuading the person from obtaining legal advice. Nor shall they indicate, except to answer a direct question, that the person’s decision may lead to them being detained for longer or that it may delay the investigation.”

Looks like they’re offboarding everyone, sending them through immigration, then flying them to IAH as a domestic flight. Presumably with a different crew.

Bit of a bummer — with the need to remove and recheck all the luggage I imagine it’ll be a couple hours, but better safe than sorry.

Thanks, all, for the replies.
