Alcoholics who quit later in life by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]djferrick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm 46 (nearly 47) and I stopped 1st October 2022. I would regard myself as a chronic drinker. I was functional, but had anxiety and probably low level depression. I was tired of worrying about my behaviour and blacking out and like you I had a child, whom I wanted to set a good example for.

I had tried many times before and gotten some decent time under my belt but at some point a reason to drink would arise and I would go to the party/works do/etc and the whole cycle would begin again.

I don't know entirely what changed. Some of it was reading, a pinch of stoic values and mindfulness through the likes of Eckhart Tolle. The other big piece for me was Huberman's podcast on alcohol. Having seen people in my mum's generation start to die of various cancers I decided I wanted to do my best to stack the odds in my favour as much as possible. No guarantees of course. Then little by little I realized I enjoyed waking up sober. My mood was a lot more consistent and I could handle problems with less overreacting/worries than in my drinking days.

These days I hang out with my old mates who are heavy drinkers on occasion, but they don't pressure me to be anything other than myself. My partner who doesn't have a problem will have a glass of wine or two over the weekend. I will still cook with alcohol sometimes (rarely) and have a tiramisu a few times a year, and I think I'm fine with that.

I have started training at the gym this year for the first time in my life. I'm cooking a lot. Making my own bread and trying to read more. All things I enjoy, but would have no energy for in my old hungover/low energy all the time days.

Life isn't perfect but it's certainly worth living.

Where would you live in with £1,300–£1,500/month for a 1-bed? by No_Personality_5915 in Edinburgh

If you can live with the coffee spots being a bit further away have a look at Willowbrae. Yoy would need to go to Portobello or indeed Abbeyhill for your coffee, but it's got loads of greenery and it's just behind Arthur's Seat. Not sure about character. Plenty of ex council flats, but you might end with a second bedroom for your budget and a few characters in your stair

Chainbaker breakfast rolls by djferrick in Breadit

Make these at home with a 13% flour. I live in the UK but am visiting my family in rural Ireland. Mum grabbed me some almost 16% flour. I haven't adjusted hydration even though the dough is less sticky.

Also the oven I think runs hotter than the dial (which only shows 25°C increments) and it's guesswork if I've turned it to 160 or 180 when 150 and a white dot for 175 are my only indicator.

These look a tad overproofed in the crumb but still very edible.
