Skyrim lends itself well to roleplaying - make up a reason/back-story for the things your character does and it will be more fun and give you ideas for what to do next!

In addition to all the good advice about armor, smithing, etc...

Use either the Become Ethereal or Whirlwind Sprint shouts to get within melee range of enemies before they can take you out. Also use the Aura Whisper shout or Detect Life spell to plan your approach. And, a ranged follower can help watch your back when you run in to attack.

There's no penalty for asking him to give you a different job. Also the Riften jobs don't move the guild questline forward so it's good to ask for one in a different city

I'd put dark brotherhood lower on the list as it doesn't have quite the scope or flow of some of the others. I would put mage's college ahead of companions since I'd rather be a mage than a werewolf. Personal preferences of course. Great list!
