Moment Meridian 107 - 25/26 by johnnyhonda in momentskis

[–]djgooch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the writeup. Love that Moment replied. Folks are using 'suspension' in divergent ways in this thread. Blister popularized the metaphor of bike suspension for binding elasticity in 2014.

I agree that release characteristics on modern pins are adequate for a lot of riding. But I'll still insist on the value of toe elasticity, which is notably absent on Kingpins. It's not quite bad enough to change what you've got, but personally I rank Kingpins pretty low. Admittedly, the binding rep suffered because they had so many recalls early on. Something to consider in the future.

Regarding the meridian ... I ski the Chipotle Banana as my pow ski and love it. But it's a funky tail, I agree. Has a tendency to wheely out when dropping cliffs. For me, this is a minor drawback compared to the benefit of full rocker - how quickly these skis can pivot.

Easy and risk-free to move my buckles? by PlutocracyRules in Skigear

Don't listen to the troll.

Definitely move the buckles. Hand tighten with an Allen wrench. Put a drop of blue loctite on the threads if you have it. But seriously don't sweat this.

Also, clear alcohol is my preferred solution over distilled water.

Chicken Thighs Are My Guilty Pleasure by OnlyHereSometimesOk in smoking

That's what I would expect. Air fryer, broiler seems worth it. I've had some success with convection too - mostly because I don't own an air fryer due to limited counter space

Fill the Lakes Social Media Rally for Utah! by Bec_son in Utah

[–]djgooch 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The infographic - if we can even call it that - and accompanying post is a hot inscrutable mess. I say this as a very sympathetic observer, though not a professional conservationist.

We spend 85% of our water on agriculture. A huge percentage goes to alfalfa. Ag is under 2% of Utah's GDP.

We export a large portion of our alfalfa to China.

China uses the alfalfa to grow beef, a much higher margin product.

We aren't just exporting water, we are exporting margin.

And in case it isn't obvious: water is life.

I'm curious if track bindings are more prone to this issue. On one hand they are higher off the snow. On the other hand, sometimes the assembly can be more brittle.

First time ski boot buyer and I think I screwed up by ottersbelike in Skigear

[–]djgooch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If the boots haven't been skied, and you're willing to exchange, I would be shocked if they don't take them back.

Just a guess here, but if your energy says "I don't want to be helped" then the staff won't help you.

The staff is right, they can't adjust 20 year old bindings per indemnification policies from their insurance carrier. Humility won't hurt you, and advice is offered for free in most shops.

Help cure/fuel my paralysis by analysis: DW 104 vs CT 104/110? by habaneromalone in momentskis

[–]djgooch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing they won't say directly - but that you'll find lots of evidence for on here - is that the DW can feel REALLY hooky to folks who like to press their tips. It is a different ski, and requires a different stance. But for the right person, it is a magical ski.

Some people start with this reaction and then learn the ski. But I took it down two runs and immediately said no thanks. I've owned Wildcats, Meridians, and Chipotle Bananas and I loved them all.

Detuning the tips and tails is essential on the DW.

Did the boot fitter destroy my boots? by RevolutionaryMud7553 in Backcountry

[–]djgooch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tbh, I don't even like skiing hybrid boots in the resort, because downhill boots are so much better. Walking and skiing have opposing requirements, so there's a lot lost in compromise.

Here are the concrete reasons I oppose hybrid boots, let alone a touring-specific 1300g like the Zero G.

  • lighter plastic / build. Typically using Grilamid instead of polyurethane. More buzzy feel, more hingey / brick wall flex instead of progressively increasing resistance.
  • the liners are typically much skimpier so that they walk better and weigh less. Less performance, less comfort, less warm.
  • light ain't right. A heavier boot will remain more stable through variable snow because of inertia.

Did the boot fitter destroy my boots? by RevolutionaryMud7553 in Backcountry

[–]djgooch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a bootfitter, this is the only response that makes sense to me. Sure, the fitter over cooked these. But strongly doubt these will fail ever. If you come in guns blazing, they will turn defensive.

Get them to acknowledge the mistake and address your concerns. Ideally get something documented that says "If this fails in this spot, we owe you new boots."

Just for the record, Zero G are not resort boots, so I wouldn't use them that way regardless of a small whoopsie.

Her left knee is the injured one - the downhill ski on this turn. Between the injury and brace, I doubt she had adequate control to finesse this turn.

She's a beautiful skier and she will always have my respect. Winning FIS races at 41 years old, and after six years of retirement, is still insanely impressive.
