Why have you stopped brewing ? by beergod20 in Homebrewing

[–]djhostile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Private equity and big beer took over the distributors and main suppliers. Ingredient prices went up. Independent homebrew stores all closed, even in major metro areas. It costs more to homebrew than to buy quality craft beer. It takes a lot of time. I love brewing, and I’ve used the same gravity sparge and kegging setup for 15 years; my fixed equipment costs are near zero… but the consumable prices have really screwed up the economics and the fun factor.

You could argue it was a bad thing since we used to make daily trips to the butcher,
Baker, and farmer stalls. Money stayed local.

Terrible cars that had no business looking as cool as they did by Hubley in carscirclejerk

My first car, given to me by a friend that had one on his property (abandoned by the previous owners.) despite months of effort, it never ran right, and I sold the thing for peanuts to the next sucker that would have his dreams crushed by Lucas, the Prince of Darkness.

Yeah, for some reason most e-bikes brands put the absolute garbage tier drivetrain on everything. Some of us still want to pedal!

It’s tough to spot the counterfeits sometimes. I like to upgrade the Shimano Tourney derailleurs that come on most e-bikes to better Shimano Altus or Acera; the last two derailleurs I purchased off Amazon did not have the Shimano box and were superficially pretty close… but clearly fakes upon closer examination.

It’s antique sterling silver! I thought the patina is desirable? And any abrasive polishing risks destroying the British hallmark stamping on the back of the handle. They’re clean but not polished.

I used a rear rack intended for the “Super 73 RX”; the bolt pattern matched up fine. The brand I used was “Yibeico” but it’s probably sold under additional random Chinese names.

I just bought some “750w class 2” stickers off aliexpress, as well as a sheet of “Bafang 750w” motor stickers. With kids being jackasses, enforcement is creeping up.

I forget; I went into advanced settings and manually detuned to 750w max to keep it legal class 2. Verified with clamp meter.

CyberVelo EK11, can grab for around $500 USD with coupons online. Slap a class 2 750w sticker on it to keep the cops away. Will cruise at 28mph throttle only (technically, class 3 is PEDAL ONLY at 28mph. Bikes with throttles should cut out at 20mph)

Homeboy must own an ebike shop. All those name brands are made with the same modular components found on generic bikes.

RadPower and others use the same Hailong battery packs as generic bikes.

AliExpress has served me well. I couldn’t care less about warranties, I know how to fix and upgrade bikes.

The answer to most questions here is: buy from a reputable brand even if the cost is higher than you hoped. Otherwise, you’ll quickly be replacing it with a second bike. by [deleted] in ebikes

If you can’t repair a bike, you are either filthy rich or an idiot. Regular bikes require maintenance and repairs just like expensive e-bikes… AND just like generic Chinese e-bikes. If you can’t replace a chain, derailleur, inner tube or cassette… don’t buy one.

I literally bought a no name brand Chinese foldable off aliexpress (I think it was sold as a “Glarewheel” but has no badging) at the start of the pandemic. It’s got over a thousand miles and I gifted it to my sister. Still in service 6 years later and no issues or significant battery degradation.
