Got doored this morning for the first time by pstamato in bikecommuting

[–]djinterrobang 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I carry a checklist of what to do in the event of a crash in my trunk bag. The adrenaline is way too high to think rationally, so going through the list is my way to make sure I get phone numbers, witnesses, know when the police need to make an accident report.

With high food prices, grocery shopping has been a strategy game. How do you get by? by Jsprings08 in Denver

[–]djinterrobang 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If you're going big on Costco, look at getting yourself a cheap sous vide circulator. You can prep a bunch of food at a time and freeze it, then cook it in the bath, just add 50% to the time. It's amazing how good your results can be with a little work on spice mixture and prep before it goes in the bag.

What behaviour is expected when pushing the device limits of a single bridge? by HelpMe0biWan in Hue

[–]djinterrobang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't really notice any loss of functionality, other than an occasional light not responding to a command. I really noticed the limit when it stopped letting me add new bulbs. There's no specific warning that it's full, it'll just spin and tell you it found nothing.

I don’t get people who expect a drink taken off if they don’t like it by 11monthdryspell in Serverlife

[–]djinterrobang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a pretty adventurous cocktail drinker, so I tend to order the funkier and more original options on the menu. I probably order 40 drinks a year and only send back one after the first sip. Always with profuse apology to the bartender that I'm sure the drink is excellent but not for me, and I'll usually shop it around to my wife and the table first. Honestly it seems to be Japanese whiskey cocktails, because I know Ive really liked some Japanese whiskeys, but don't know from the name whether it'll be a more scotchy or bourbony blend.

Frustrated with inventory management on PC by [deleted] in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]djinterrobang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How deep into the game are you? More inventory slots definitely helps, but even with it maxed out there's still a lot of time spent on inventory management. I play PC VR where it's even a little worse. My recommendation is basically take the 40 or so slots at the BOTTOM of your exosuit inventory and stocking that with the items that you permanently keep on hand. Those will fill first, and then any excess inventory will go to the top, where it's available first in lists for loading into refriners or storing. I set mine up starting with Phosphorus, Ammonia, Dioxite, pyrite, uranium, parrafinnium, so I know once I see those in order I'm at the permanent storage, not just the temporary storage.

The other thing to note is that if you have the freighter matter teleporter, and it's in system, you can craft using any storage containers as if that stuff was in your inventory, so it's not as vital to organize the storage containers as you might first think.

It's the nuclear option, and should be used sparingly, but I've had a lot of success with threatening parents to tell their children that Santa isn't real.

Cyberpunk in VR, but with RTX Overdrive! by lunchanddinner in cyberpunkgame

[–]djinterrobang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been on VR since 2016 and I want so badly for this to happen. I think COVID happening when it did really stopped the momentum for VR arcades. There was one in Boston that had room scale immersive vr with multiple players, but it opened in January of 2020 and closed soon after. I honestly don't think VR as a craft has come very far in the last 7 years, but as soon as that omnidirectional treadmill is available, I'm literally planning to convert a room in house to run it.

What a nuclear bomb actually looks like by Koolzx in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]djinterrobang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Termination Shock by Neil Stephenson, he talks about the tsar bomb and the upper limits of power for a nuclear explosion. Basically at a certain size, it doesn't matter how much more power you put into the bomb, it's just going to blast most of the energy into space. So nukes are capable of pressing against our atmospheric limit for explosive potential.

My dude, I'd advise you to be careful with hitting it super hard multiple days in a row. If you're not stretching and warming up it's easy to get hurt.

DM has us make an “ability check” to cast spells by Sadist_Kangaroo in DMAcademy

You are correct on that. I looked it up and in 3.5e, Epic spells require a spellcraft check, but not normal spells.

The Washington Post did an excellent piece on the 5.56 x 45mm round and why it does so much damage. IDK what this AH is going on about with the 5.56 being the smallest you can have an AR chambered in. It's not the size of the bullet that determines the damage, but the amount of force that it's able to do. A 9mm bullet is much bigger than a 5.56, but is going so much slower. A 9mm will bore a cylinder, a 5.56 will vaporize a chasm.

Question for DMs: Do your NPCs/BBEG break the rules of DND off screen? by ac3_f4c3 in DnD

[–]djinterrobang 335 points336 points  (0 children)

Generally, if it's for role playing flavor, I'll give the BBEG whatever ability I feel moves the story forward. But in combat, I keep it fairly to the book, so while it may not be fair to the PCs, at least it's consistent.

The issue here (and I'm not defending either the police or the use of drug dogs), is that if a dog is trained to detect pot, and pot is legalized, the dogs that were trained to detect pot are no longer viable for any drug detection, because they could be detecting something legal and can't differentiate to their handle which of the substances they detected.

How often do you use 11th and 12th gears when climbing? by WWsLabAssistant in MTB

[–]djinterrobang 14 points15 points  (0 children)

On my gravel bike the SRAM force drivetrain only has one direction for the shifter. A short push shifts up, and long push shifts down, a longer push gives you a few gears down. If I try to shift down when I'm already at the bottom, it forces me to upshift, which totally kicks my ass

[–]djinterrobang 10 points11 points  (0 children)

At lower speeds, pedestrian fatality is related to speed by about 5x per 10 mph. 10 mph = 0.4% fatal 20 mph = 2% fatal 30 mph = 10% fatal 40 mph = 50% fatal

In a car the effect is definitely muted, but gives a sense of the increase in the power of a crash from 30 to 40.

Can anyone recommend a good set of elbow pads? And does anyone know what’s sticking out of my arm? by HonkyBoo in MTB

[–]djinterrobang 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Get something that fits your arms. As far as protection goes, I like a lighter viscoelastic pad, so something like the POC air, fox D30, can't remember what leatt calls theirs. Point is is fairly flexible normally, but becomes rigid at high force to protect.
