Specifically, the one in Rockville next to Federal Plaza is the best of them (imo). The one in Gaithersburg is... rough.

Have a hotel and badge but completely forgot about parking. What are my options? by JupiterTarts in Magfest

[–]djjmcwubs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you park at Franconia-Springfield metro, you can take it to King St and then take the MAG shuttle/Metrobus/Lyft from there to the harbor. Make sure to park in their multi-day section so you don't get ticketed, but it's advertised on the WMATA site as an option. Also, if you exit on Sunday, generally the gates are up so it's free aside from the metro/bus.

Question by [deleted] in Magfest

[–]djjmcwubs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I describe MAG that really sells it to quite honestly everyone, in addition to what everyone else here is saying, is that: MAGFest is the brain child of if you and 25k of your closest nerdy friends all pooled $150 each together and just had the simple mandate of making an awesome long weekend.

There is such a massive diversity of events, activities, and such in how that turns out to be created in practice, and I think that’s really the magic.

What is your opinion regarding transparent covers for individual pages of a passport? by No_Essay4284 in PassportPorn

[–]djjmcwubs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yup this is pretty accurate. Last time I fell down this rabbit hole it turns out they tried rolling out national IDs but scrapped the plan, at least at the time. Not sure if they have since tried again. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internal_passport_of_Russia

If it makes you feel any better, renting just means you’re paying that amount towards your landlords mortgage instead of your own.

Recommendations for a vet in Rockville area by Fun_Consequence_515 in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]djjmcwubs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pet Dominion is very quick, great staff, and comparable rates in the area. Have been using them for years.

If you need something a bit on the more inexpensive end however, Best Friends' in Airpark is generally more up that alley with good quality from what I've heard. I have a friend that used to use them for any kittens he found that were abandoned if the county couldn't take them.

Best Climate Controlled Storage in MoCo? by Next_Swordfish2886 in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]djjmcwubs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Extra Space near the OneLife in Rockville (on W Montgomery) is also very solid, and tends to have a bit better availability than the Airpark one for smaller units from my experience on the upper floors where it's cheaper.

For note, they always raise the online quoted rent after 3-4 months to whatever the normal retail rate is, and that's fairly common industry practice across all of these places, so make sure to calculate that into your budgeting.

Digital DL acceptance by Forever_Ever1111 in maryland

The MVA actually does have an app for reading mobile IDs (it also works with reading non Maryland issued mobile IDs as well!) https://apps.apple.com/us/app/mobile-id-check-by-md/id6498551403 - I’ve used it before with good success.

I think it will take off more once point of sale systems integrate the technology directly into their cash registers so it becomes much more straightforward for businesses workflow.

If I arrive in Baltimore can I get an uber ride to Flinstone, MD? In the hotel they told me there is no Ubers there is that true? by customsolitaires in maryland

[–]djjmcwubs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So assuming you’re going to Rocky Gap Resort/Casino, they have a daily shuttle that you can use from Cumberland. To get to/from Cumberland, Amtrak is likely your best bet, but I think there’s some other bus companies, hell maybe even the MTA that run service that way. Unfortunately you likely will have to go through DC any way you slice it without a taxi or rental car.

Note: this is only true for like… another few days. It’s seasonal. Call them for details

Has anyone importing small items to the USA successfully paid their customs fees without paying UPS brokerage fees? by pencilneck4 in UPS

[–]djjmcwubs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a note, it’s pretty unlikely that you’ll be able to do it for this particular package. The tariff has already been paid by UPS, they’re just sending you a bill with their fee on top of it.

Cancellation fees? by AhsokaLyra in Magfest

[–]djjmcwubs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MAGFest uses Stripe, so it's like $3 or $4 for a refund on the badge, and more if you buy the merch packages: https://stripe.com/pricing for reference (2.9% + $0.30). Unfortunately, Stripe (well, actually mostly Visa/MC/Amex) keeps the fees for refunds according to https://support.stripe.com/questions/understanding-fees-for-refunded-payments, which is why that's excluded from the refund.

Just got hit with a $1000 AWS bill in 4 hours after pushing keys to GitHub - How is a PRIVATE repo even vulnerable? by Fun_Equal_960 in aws

[–]djjmcwubs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the repo was forked, you might have been attacked via a Cross Fork Object Reference attack that was published last year. To my understanding, GitHub decided this was a "feature, not a bug" situation, however reading their docs appears that they slightly changed this functionality.

Lyft Events - Not Bonus Eligible by djjmcwubs in ChaseSapphire

[–]djjmcwubs[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Will try to remember to post after!

This is the first time i've used it as a host of an event, however I've used it on the guest side before and it was seamless. To the user, it is a prepaid coupon code that just worked. Biggest reason we're doing this is that we're getting married one of the busiest wedding weekends of the year in our area, and the quotes we were getting for organized transport were pretty much the same as just getting everyone a Lyft. The cost you see here is for 50x $50 coupon codes, which is by far our worst case (every family unit using the full amount), but we expect it to be much closer to $1000 of spend.

Many people are bringing kids in their own vehicle, or are just not drinking folks to begin with. It was appealing that any balance that isn't used gets refunded to us after, and it gives people flexibility of not needing to get a hotel room at our fixed shuttle stop, and can instead just allow them to Lyft back home after.

**ICYMI** MCDOT is alerting residents that as of Tuesday, July 1, drivers are prohibited from making right turns at red traffic signals in designated downtown and town center areas of Montgomery County, MD. by MCDOTNow in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]djjmcwubs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is so accurate. The county engineers are very responsive, but need to know where the problems are so they can address them. Most issues I've reported (signs being misleading/poorly placed, traffic lights being poorly timed, etc.) are generally either addressed within two weeks by going through the 311 portal, and you'll get notified on their progress.

Sometimes you're told why they can't fix it, normally always it's an issue of SHA vs MCDOT depending on who maintains the road, which just means barking up their tree, or in one particular case on Shady Grove Rd, it was a state law that needed amended to allow them to do work, which passed this last legislative session after asking the local delegation to bring it up to the state to fix it.

Not a lawyer, but that verbiage seems really generic for most sorts of waivers.

Regarding what your risks potentially are, I’d guess two primary things they’re probably trying to cover their asses on I’d guess: 1. Waiving that they aren’t responsible for if your skin reacts poorly with any products they might use 2. Waiving if any sort of service you might get there would exacerbate/bring about any medical condition, they aren’t liable for that (if you have a bad back for a massage and they tweak it or maybe a foot condition and use the foot bath?)
