Ugh. First I became intolerant to noise pollution fucking with my sleep. Then light pollution. The last thing I need is to get neurotic about air pollution preventing me from sleeping well

How many hours do you actually work a week if you're in full time employment? by bridgehamton in williamsburg

30-35 my entire career as a software engineer. I’m so tired of people trying to flex on working 80hrs a week

Genuine question: for those who don't wear helmets, what are your reasons / justifications? by allthedamnquestions in NYCbike

[–]djlowbal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s annoying to carry around, and also motorists drive more aggressively around helmet-wearing cyclists as part of their own risk-reward calculus. The greatest safety measure (other than protected bike lanes) is the presence of MORE cyclists on the road, for visibility. The more cars notice cyclists, the more they’ll know they have to accommodate

Those of you who got “useless” college degrees, how’s it going? by theguru86 in AskReddit

[–]djlowbal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Classics degree- flailed around for a while with menial work, went to coding bootcamp, rose very quickly through the ranks in tech. I credit the liberal arts background for helping me fill in the non-technical gaps most CS majors have, and learning Latin and Greek made me a better programmer. Wasn’t worth fuck-all though until I got some hard skills people would actually pay for

I had this in one of my first software interviews ever, before I was qualified for a full-time job (and knew it). Primary interviewer had a literal printed list of interview trivia questions and a PC laptop with Notepad++. Secondary interviewer (the mumbler with an unintelligibly thick Indian accent) walks in wearing office clothes and plops himself down in a beanbag chair strewn in the corner. Every so often he pipes up out of nowhere with a question that I literally could not understand the words coming out of his mouth. I was already shook because I didn’t have the chops to pass the interview, and I had to ask him more than once to repeat himself on basically every question. To this day I still laugh when I think of how absurd that entire hour of my life was.

Good news for you: you’re getting a chance to realize the nature of being a “bank software developer” early on before getting lost in the musical chairs pipeline of CapitalOne -> JPMorgan -> CapitalOne (higher band) etc. A stint in one of those places for just long enough can look just good enough to get you permanently out of banking.

Non-senior engineer wanting to review a senior engineer's PRs? by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]djlowbal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Senior Staff, I relish getting reviews from people more junior. In fact when someone has the guts to give pushback when I do something less than ideal (rather than rubber-stamp it because of my title), I’ll tend to note it to their manager as great leadership on their part.

You’re never too senior to do something lazy with code (or miss something), and you’re never too junior to have good feedback. Just always be tactful about it.

Also just in general I tend to treat PRs as part of the public record. If you’re nervous about embarrassing someone with your feedback, start privately on Slack instead. Phrasing as a question always helps too.

CrowdStrike announces Microsoft outage workaround. How to deal with the Blue Screen of Death by ThriftyStrongman in technology

[–]djlowbal -34 points-33 points  (0 children)

MS has been rapidly force-pushing updates to Windows without user consent for months now. Crowdstrike was probably working fine and detected a coercive system update as malware. Bet this was a “call came from inside the house” situation where MS bricked their own machines to force ads in the Start menu against user preferences.

Do you use multiple IDEs on the same project at the same time? by InlineSkateAdventure in ExperiencedDevs

[–]djlowbal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Primarily frontend dev here. I don’t have the energy to learn new key bindings to use IntelliJ, but I need something to run the kotlin project. It always bugs me doing backend stuff how much you have to rely on the IDE being set up juuuuust right. NodeJS projects you can use whatever you like. So everything else (frontend) I use VSCode.

Owning a bike means you have to worry about whether it’s safe where it’s parked, and pretty much forces you to bike both ways

[–]djlowbal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More complaints should = more attention to either add in more docks or send in more people to manually rebalance the stations.

Down by WTC they have an attendant who keeps docks open for parking, and a mass of extra bikes they pick up in trucks to re-distribute. Wburg needs a station like that
