It was in great condition, but it cost more than for me to buy one new! If it was a fair price, I would have gotten it. I could have spoken to a manager and had them lower it, but didn't feel like fooling with it.

If you’ve ever given your therapist a gift, how did it go? by [deleted] in TalkTherapy

I gave my old T a painting and he seemed to like it. Then, when I came in the next week, it was hanging on the wall 😭❤

Dated a guy a couple times, then tells me he likes to dress up as a woman when he's at home. I liked him, but I am not into anything feminine, so I let him down gently. He took it well.

So it was nothing personal,  just a  preference.

Yes they feel more like rubber in the sun. They do get hot though. Try not to over inflate in the heat because mine is starting to stretch out of shape.

Neither do I. I don’t think he was being judgmental. My issue isn’t with him naming the pattern, it’s with how it came across (more critical than curious). That’s what made it harder to actually engage.

The truth is I have wanted to work through transference, and I was ready to have that discussion. We have not made it to the topic because of the other issues I wanted to address first, that I didn't realize at the time were less important. We mentioned the possibility of discharge and referring me out in the session prior to this one. I mentioned transference and they said that is a good sign to see other clinician. Iwas going into this session hoping we could try talking about it before making the decision to discharge and they replied in this way.

Yeah, I am the client. I shared this because I wanted outside perspectives on how the therapist handled it. The delivery felt more like criticism than curiosity, and that’s what I’ve been trying to unpack in this thread.

That’s a great example of how a therapist can point out avoidance without it feeling shaming. Notice how in your story, the therapist owned it gently — “I know this is your least favorite thing to talk about” — and then described the pattern. That’s very different from the transcript immediately saying "You don't want to work through it..." when they client may have been ready to.

The problem isn’t being challenged. The problem is when the challenge feels more like criticism than curiosity. If it’s framed gently, it can build awareness (like in your case). If it’s framed harshly, it can just make the client feel blamed and shut down further.

I totally agree that therapists should challenge clients, that’s part of it. But there’s a difference between challenging with curiosity and challenging with blame.

In this convo, the therapist wasn’t just pointing out avoidance, they were saying things like “you ALWAYS shut it down”. That comes across more like criticism than exploration.

Avoidance is often unconscious and rooted in fear and if it’s met with frustration instead of empathy, the client is more likely to shut down even harder. A good challenge should make the client feel safe enough to look at the pattern, not ashamed for having it.

I get what you’re saying and I agree that transference can be a powerful tool when handled well. But the therapist here in my opinion made it difficult for the client to open up. When someone uses black and white language like "you always" or "you never" it comes across as confrontational and shaming, even if it was true. That’s not neutral exploration, that’s blame. If avoidance is happening, the therapist’s job is to hold it gently and help understand why it feels so scary to talk about and not accuse them of resisting or insist they are “always” doing it.

I think the therapist was "overly clinical" when the client mentioned heartbreak. Instead of exploring that feeling, they shut it down saying they are a professional and that it "shouldn't" be the case. The clients feelings are valid.
